So all media outlets are reporting the coordinates of 25 S 101 E ... Is there any way [for us] to find out what the average depth of the Indian Ocean is around this specific location??

Sky News now reporting that "Malaysian Government Sources" are confirming that a Chinese ship has found a signal!! I think this is our first third-party confirmation...

Planning on going to the pool and BBQing

Thank You China -you better not be messing around with my T-Bone!!!!!!!

As the hours go by and the bits of information trickle out, the circumstantial evidence is mounting to support the existence of this ping detection actually taking place. It appears that at the very least, the Chinese Government informed both the Malaysian and Australian Governments that such a signal was detected at the coordinates reported. The real question that remains is if this detected signal is accurate!

If this is it, I hope the battery doesn't die before they locate the area.

But if they are part of the search area and search team (and they are), it had everything to do with the math. The math is how they are defining the search area.

I'm sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I was trying to say my gut feeling was nothing to do with fancy maths, but obviously the areas they are searching are because of fancy maths. I have been feeling for days that they needed to move the search north and now they are so I am happy about that.

I just realized it was a Chinese plane that spotted the large objects floating and the Chinese ship that heard the pings. Were they both working the same area?

Also heard or read (don't remember which) that the Chinese ship did report the pings to Australia and Malaysia as required. A reporter on board was the one who released the news to the public.

He is a hoot to listen to but he has been just flat our wrong on so much stuff the past month!

Just wrong!
I have been listening to ATC, and CVR recorders for YEARS and years!

If it is the box pinging and they know it can only be a certain distance away then even if the battery died, they would have relatively small radius of a few kilometres of sea bed to search.

I imagine they are waiting for an underwater sub thing to search the Ocean floor in the area of those coordinates.

Have there been any updates that the pinger sound it still being heard by the ship hours later? It would seem to me that if the pings are still being heard several hours later that it would not be marine life, (because marine life is always moving) but something stationary like the black box settled at the bottom of the ocean. What else besides marine life, and a planes black box would ping in the ocean?
How long would it take for the US unmanned sub that explore the bottom of the ocean to get to this location, and start searching?
There is a part of me that still believes the plane landed somewhere safely, I do not believe that the passengers and crew were spared. I hope that I am wrong in my thinking and that this is the beginning of finding answers for the love ones of the plane victims.
I have such a hard time staying logged in with my computer and being able to post. I read here every day when I first get home from work. I tune in here even before going to any MSM knowing that this sight has the most up to date and informed information. IMO Thank you to everyone for all you do for this sight.

No no no, you are fine... I didn't explain MY point very well - I am saying your gut has everything to do with the math - your gut said the southern search was wrong and so did the fancy math! SO your gut = fancy math! :)

The timeframe will certainly clarify eventually, but it's starting to look as though China may have made this finding pretty early in the day and they informed both the Malaysian and Australian governments in a timely manner. I'm starting to speculate that they informed the Malaysians BEFORE the press conference, and after seeing that there was NO mention of these findings in the press conference, decided to unleash the news on the world themselves via state media! In my opinion, this would certainly be a huge "XXXX YOU" to the Malaysians in response to them not mentioning the news in the press conference!! Just speculation, of course.

Same here, and just when I was planning to catch up on some :eek:fftobed:

On the other hand, you could just follow the usual way things have been unfolding in this mystery and go to sleep and when you wake up, nothing will have changed and it will still be breaking news with the original story

Defence Minister David Johnston says he is yet to receive a report about the signal and is advising caution.

"This is not the first time we have had something that has turned out to be very disappointing," he said.

"I'm just going to wait for Angus (Houston) and the team and my team to come forward with something that's positive because this is a very very difficult task."

I hope the ping wasn't from one of the search planes.
Do all planes have black boxes ?
