Is this Angus Houston fellow a colonel, by any chance?

Didn't someone say distance down was same as Titanic? Or did I misread?

Ok, has anyone thought a black box is being secretly planted to shut everyone up?

Creepy ElleElle, I was watching some show earlier and thinking about hijackers ripping it out and dumping it in the ocean.
Not thinking logically of course, just thinking of another crazy theory.
Honestly I have given up on ever knowing what REALLY happened.

Planted by who? Which country? ty

Doesn't have to be a country per se, could be an organization. It was just a thought. I can think of a couple of countries who seem to be witholding information. Malaysia, China?

It is a little deeper than the Titanic.
Titanic is at 12,500 ft.I believe the search area bottoms at about 15,000 ft..

Why would a 19 and 29 year old need some man to call a travel agent to get an airplane tickets

on a paid for mission??

Sound located yesterday has been investigated unlikely to be from the black box. CNN reporting this also.

UPDATE ALERT- CNN reports Prime Minister Abbott of Australia has briefed reporters in Shanghai it looks like there will be no press conference at the moment.

MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE - http://www.jacc.gov.au/media/releases/2014/april/mr018.aspx

Media Release
11 April 2014—pm

The Chief Coordinator of the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston (Ret'd), said an initial assessment of the possible signal detected by a RAAF AP-3C Orion aircraft yesterday afternoon has been determined as not related to an aircraft underwater locator beacon.

“The Australian Joint Acoustic Analysis Centre has analysed the acoustic data and confirmed that the signal reported in the vicinity of the Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield is unlikely to be related to the aircraft black boxes,” Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston (Ret'd), said.

“Further analysis continues to be undertaken by Australian Joint Acoustic Analysis Centre.

“Today Ocean Shield is continuing more focussed sweeps with the Towed Pinger Locator to try and locate further signals that may be related to the aircraft's black boxes. It is vital to glean as much information as possible while the batteries on the underwater locator beacons may still be active.

“The AP-3C Orions continue their acoustic search, working in conjunction with Ocean Shield, with three more missions planned for today.

“A decision as to when to deploy the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle will be made on advice from experts on board the Ocean Shield and could be some days away.

“On the information I have available to me, there has been no major breakthrough in the search for MH370. I will provide a further update if, and when, further information becomes available.”

Waiting to see if there is still going to be a press conference.

ABC News Live just said they are 'waiting on word from the Prime Minister in Shanghai'. (Aussie Prime Minister)

Lots of news about a dangerous cyclone heading for northern NW Australia right now too.

A basic outline of a huge aviation disaster:

This was another interesting aviation story. I remember the night! JAL ironically numbered "007" (!) was shot down by the Russians in 83. It was a commerical fight, strayed off course and flew over very sensitive Russian radar bases.

They scrambled fighters, claimed they could not tell it was a distinctive 747 passenger plane and shot em out of the sky. Huge internationial deal .

FLight recorders are made to deal with huge impact and fires. 007 flight recorder was located by the RUssians. They lied and said no. They survived and worked . THe recorders were placed in a safe and kept secret for YEARS!

To this date much debate remains , was 007 really on a spy mission, trying to light up their radar to see their reactions, what they would do, how long it would take to scramble? Humm

Read many books on it .

I vote no, i think he accidently programed numbers in the flight data managment system - it was night, long flightin the middle of the night etc

But the mystery remains unsolved......................

Unconfirmed report says Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 black box has been found

Mr Thomas told Perth radio station 6PR that the Ocean Shield and the HMS Echo have both left the search area “at speed” and sources had told him there was a possibility they had “triangulated” and located the black box.

“Echo has come along and done a radar scan, an echo scan if you like, along the bottom and they’ve had a return which is a positive, which may indicate the wreckage of a plane.”

He stressed these were unconfirmed reports but “if they are firm enough to say we have located the black box, that is enough for them to launch the Bluefin 21 to go down to the bottom and take photographs or scan the bottom with a sonar scanner.

Oh ... sorry. :)

That went right over my head ... we don't get Saturday Night Live here (though I have seen it many times in a past life - obviously don't remember Colonel Angus though).

If I was on a flight, I just thought the pilots and the ground control are working together to handle everything

I think that's pretty much how it works. There is someone always monitoring your plane. Watching it, maybe not, but monitoring, yes. The exception would be if the pilot disabled systems, went off course, and refused to talk to them, but that is obviously not typical. It's very much a collaborative effort that seems to work well. They all get regular updates.

BBM- and he's my very favourite one. He is a nice guy AND he challenged the government over the children overboard issue during the inquiry.

People smuggling is a big business. Like a "fixer". Same reason people arrange holidays with travel agents - they tell you about good deals, places to avoid, know the ins and outs, use their contacts - and they do it for a fee. Just come to Australia, people smuggling is always in the news. Does the same not exist in America? Like for people coming from Mexico?
