As for abandoned air fields in Vietnam and neighboring countries, I grew up in the subtropics and, in fact, my high school was built on what had been a Naval Air Field during WWII.

Unless a landing strip is maintained very carefully, vegetation takes over quickly in that sort of climate. I doubt those "thousands of abandoned airfields" in Indochina are still capable of handling a 777 landing.

And Canada. We use mm/dd/yyyy format too.

O/T
For whatever reason..All 3 date formats are used in Canada..in english and in french
maybe we just didn't want to decide on which one to use..we liked them all LOL

Social Insurance applications for Canada use DD MM YYYY format

Passport applications] and tax returns use YYYY MM DD.

Nearly all newspapers use MM DD YYYY

I just have a very hard time believing the pilots are involved, but of course, I know nothing.

The pilots would have been educated and in the upper-class of Malaysia - not the type of people working with terrorists, IMO.

Psychological issues - maybe. But then there is the issue of 2 pilots - they can't both have been going through severe psychological issues at the same time, or conspired together. One would have had to be able to disable the other pilot.

On CNN right now is an ocean search specialist who says that the area in which the plane could have crashed into the Indian Ocean is deep but fairly flat which is good news considering it would be easier to search as opposed to an ocean bed that has deep valleys.

I believe you may be talking about Diego Garcia, which is a navel base in the Indian Ocean. It has a 12,000 foot runway on it. I posted the link for it a few posts back. I wish they would have landed there!

No, this one was in the Andaman Sea, it's an island with an abandoned runway.
I found the map on MSM!

Here is where they got the map, you can zoom in on the map to see where they all are:

This seems to continue to be broadcast/tweeted but Malaysia has not directly said this. Wonder if there was another PC?

@jameschau sat down with Malaysia’s Transport Minister @HishammuddinH2O for an exclusive interview on the #MH370 search. Stay tuned for more

He interviewed him..so I don't know.

On CNN they were saying that when the plane would be coming down from 45,000 feet it would be breaking up.

It was reported that the satellite analysis from the engine showed it went from 45,000 ft to 23,000ft in 1 minute
That is a fast decline

But have they confirmed that the plane did indeed climb to 45,000 ft..I heard from experts that the information is not accurate.

PS Steely
I was laughing so much at your use of the slapping folding chair in the middle of the night posts...glad it was not directed to me LOL

I wish someone would find Jim Thompson, founder of the famous silk company in Thailand, too. In 1967, he disappeared on Easter Sunday from the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. No one ever saw him again.

After I read the book about his life, I couldn't stop thinking about what happened to him. I believe this was my first case pre WS! Then I recalled how I devoured Nancy Drew books as a kid.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Thompson_(designer)

Read every Nancy Drew!! I pretended I was her traveling and solving all of those mysteries!

Just a thought but could the co-pilot have been spending the last 7 years of his life training for this? I would be interested to know who he hung round with in his late teens.

Yes. And it's just that, if you look at the map they are constantly showing, it goes alllll the way over Malaysia, into the ocean, and then turns west. When they could have just turned transponder off earlier, turned northwest earlier, and gone on their indented NEW route. Instead of wasting time and fuel going in such a round-a-bout way.

I agree this is significant. Along the same thought, why not hijack a plane headed west instead? There must be reasons for these things. I think the Malaysia /Vietnam ATC turnover plays into this and gave "them" time to make headway to wherever they were truly heading. No one had the ball, so to speak, and in the void (be it error or intentional), the plane was free to change course with minimal disruption. IMO "they" knew this was their transition point.

And it worked! Supposedly, Subang ATC lost contact with MH370 at 1:12am, but did not notify MA of the missing status until 2:40am. It wasn't until after 7am that Malaysia Airline announced the plane was missing.

I am not current with fine details of this story but have they discovered any sort of social link between these 2 pilots?

Did the younger pilots train at the older one's home? Did they socially engage together in their community or had a link through any organizations that was not aviation based?

This would not be a smoking gun but it gives us something.

One other random comment. I would prefer that the pilot of any jet I'm on be a minimum age of 35. I want a seasoned pro, even for a co-pilot. But that's just me...

United States law enforcement and intelligence officials are focusing on the possibility that at least one of the Malaysia Airlines pilots is responsible for the disappearance of flight MH 370 after new information revealed the plane performed "tactical evasion maneuvers" after it disappeared from radar, two senior law enforcement officials told ABC News Saturday.

...the maneuvers appeared to be done to evade radar...only a person with extensive flight or engineering experience could have executed them.

...no indications anyone besides the pilots had the ability to perform the complicated maneuvers done by the plane.

LINK

As it stands, someone with skill evading radar took over the plane and flew it away for 7 1/2 hours. The only perps were the ones flying the plane AND anyone waiting at a hypothetical destination. The plane either crashed or landed at points unknown in Central Asia.

ATC acted 100% normally in Malaysia and Vietnam. Any conspiracy had NO need to involve them (giant and pointless risk!), and the person flying the plane worked HARD to deceive ATC.

So assuming whoever had control of the plane was skilled enough to evade radar, we can also assume they'd be able to land it safely. It therefore has to be pilot suicide / pilot corruption (whether long term or "on the day", gun to head etc) or a third party hijacker with aviation skills.

I think this has been years in the planning. Someone very clever somewhere has planned this.

It gives some hope to the idea the passengers might still be alive somewhere. Probably not, but possible.

I've heard several times he was engaged to be married. Here is a profile of the two pilots:

video here says the plane turned but then based on pings either went north or south.. if they have pings in both directions how could that be and what could that relate to? Perhaps unidentified pings in both directions that are not confirmed yet? Hope they can get to the bottom of this soon.

I think there is a lot going on here that we do not yet know, that is for sure.

That is my hope and I know it's the passengers only chance of being alive.
It's just scary there are so many abandoned runways, some even on ISLANDS.
Obviously I've never thought about it before so I didn't know that there were so many.

My children now know about as much about the Geography over there as they do of America!
We've looked into several of the gorgeous islands over there and some history of the area. :seeya:

We discussed Tromelin Island the other day. I believe anything is possible.

The hijackers could of flied the 777 like they were playing a video game.

o/t: I went to the Y to soak in the hot tub. It was closed for repair. So, here I am. :)
