Look at Chicago, corruption, torture, unlawful searches. Horrible behavior by people "in power". Not to mention shootings in the outlying suburbs of unarmed people. Peaceful protests do have power, the unheard/disenfranchised/downtrodden need strong leadership. A leader that promotes peaceful protest, that COULD inspire the kind of change that MLK fought for. It seems to many "leaders" have their own agenda. I am a cynic, BUT I do believe that real change can happen. Not right away, but SOMEDAY.

Change we can believe in or just the same ole same ole. Idk.

Daily Mail: "She is taking the brunt of this... she has no insurance': Heartbroken mom and son watch their store burn down in Baltimore riots"

Asian shopkeeper loses everything. Grace Lyo watched, distraught, as the Hae-Tteuneun Market burned

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ts-love-neighborhood.html?ito=social-facebook

As reported by the NYT (see link) the rioters (who can only be described as racist IMO) targeted shops owned by Asians, Arabs while leaving black owned businesses untouched.

This quote from your link ..
“We do not have a lot of activity or movement throughout the city as a whole, so curfew is, in fact, working,” Mr. Batts said just before midnight.

He added, “The biggest thing is that citizens are safe. The city is stable. We hope to maintain it that way.”

Has me mind sprung . The citizens havent been safe there in years. The city has not been stable . They have never maintained it. 300 murders a year. It is number 7 on the top ten most dangerous citys with over 10 percent of the population being victims of violent crime every year.

Agree. The citizens may want to stop killing each other while enforcing a anti snitching policy. Jmo

After seeing the interviews with Rep Elijah Cummings I think they could use "better recruitment". I don't know how he could get elected Dogcatcher much less elected to Congress LOL

I think it was interesting that Rudy Guiliani called out Rep Elijah Cummings for the impoverished situation in his home district of decades. Cummings made a big deal tonight of this area being his hometown and his area that he is accountable to as a congressman. And yet we see that it is one of the worst districts in many ways. Less than half of his constituents have employment. One quarter of the homes are abandoned . Very high crime rate. He was listing these issues himself when he discussed WHY they were rioting. AND YET, He has been their congressman for decades? So Rudy asked what Rep. Cummings has done to try and bring them some job opportunities and/or real estate developments to raise values.

ETA:
Elijah Eugene Cummings (born January 18, 1951) is the U.S. Representative for Maryland's 7th congressional district, serving since 1996.[1] He is a member of the Democratic Party. The district includes just over half of Baltimore City, as well as most of Howard County. He previously served in the Maryland House of Delegates.

Agree. I may not like Rudy G that much but he use to be my mayor while living in NY. And I must say that he did help clean up the streets during a brutal crack era.

Bloombergs job as a NY mayor was made easier due to his riches as well as Rudy's implemented strategies.

So I due respect Rudy questioning Elijah.

You can't sell out the good people just because your voter base consist of ........................

You do realize that BCP officers were charged in relation to that case right?
http://www.baltimoresun.com/bal-te.md.police14may14-story.html#page=1

You do realize that after the Rodney King and riot debacle; That the people who torn down their own neighborhood had to live in that chaotic looking environment for years. It wasn't rebuilt right away.

But the cops and jurors and system that they were mad at didn't live in their neighborhood. They did.

So my thing is "stop torching down the neighborhood"

That item that you are stealing or that place you are burning down is not going to rectify the situation. Jmo

I am all for the community standing up for brutal situations. But If you burn down my favorite Chinese restaurant or the local store directly across the street from me or the closes laundromat that my mother walks to on a weekly basis; Than we are going to have a problem.

These youngsters don't realize that certain places are actually landmarks of the neighborhood that some people appreciate. Plus you get outsiders that just want to join in for looting.

But when it is all said and done; There is nothing left except a longer hike to the nearest business that was fortunate enough to not get shut down. Jmo

Your plea to me is falling on death ears. I don't live there either . I cant place a value on a place I don't or will never and that I have never seen much hope in ,maybe they cannot either. I don't think the burning is meant to be personal they are making a stand in a way that will be heard . I don't agree with anyone getting hurt or the burning of the city but I am not going to judge them because they have no voice or platform until they get attention but I will say in all honesty if Baltimore has to burn before it can make positive changes, I will not lose sleep over it. What does make me lose sleep is that Justice is not held in the same light for everyone. That Baltimore will go back to being the exact same with police acting the exact same ways because they believe they are entitled to act that way.
Martin Luther King said
there is another America. This other America has a daily ugliness about it that constantly transforms the ebulliency of hope into the fatigue of despair. In this America millions of work-starved men walk the streets daily in search for jobs that do not exist. In this America millions of people find themselves living in rat-infested, vermin-filled slums. In this America people are poor by the millions. They find themselves perishing on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.
He had no idea about the upcoming drug epidemic. Which makes his next statement ever more powerful

Little children in this other America are forced to grow up with clouds of inferiority forming every day in their little mental skies. As we look at this other America, we see it as an arena of blasted hopes and shattered dreams. Many people of various backgrounds live in this other America. Some are Mexican Americans, some are Puerto Ricans, some are Indians, some happen to be from other groups. Millions of them are Appalachian whites. But probably the largest group in this other America in proportion to its size in the Population is the American Negro.
The American Negro finds himself living in a triple ghetto. A ghetto of race, a ghetto of poverty, a ghetto of human misery.
Maybe he predicted it a tiny bit.
But we must see that the struggle today is much more difficult. It's more difficult today because we are struggling now for genuine equality
And here we are.
s. But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear?

Agree. A change is needed all around. But youngsters who barely worked a day in their lives that decide to handle matters this way is not warranted nor welcomed.

The working respectable people such as MLK are protesting. But the non working youngsters are going too far via messing up their own community.

Some rioters need to realize that it takes smarts to make a difference and not just lashing out.

But I agree with you totally. There is definitely a reason for them to be mad.

But since there is 300 murders a year which consist of local on local crime; Than they can also focus on that as well. Jmo

I am going to drop a bunch of links on you . I dont have time to link a nice text on how they all relate to the big picture in B'more. I just want you to know that those murder rates will most likely include some commited by ,caused by or related to BCP.
Then I want you to remember that police officers are often the first and most reliable witnesses called upon in court and suggest you look over the conviction rates. There is a ton of published stuff. What is being hidden?

What is evident from a macro-perspective (aka "the big picture") is how frighteningly frail the line between social structure ("orderliness") versus chaos ("criminality/looting) really is!
Coming to a theatre near you!

Sorry, couldn't help but looking at Balt-more from a sociological perspective. It's not about police brutality or gang activity to me. Those types of issues are merely "symptoms" of a larger breakdown systemically within the type of society of which we live in.
Some might say (& I would agree) that what we see here is the effects of Capitalism and Corporatism slapping around Democracy a bit.

You know, it's about the ugliness of the "haves and have nots". And it is a growing gap within our country. It will not play out well.

Agree. But I still feel that the totality of the anger which is being displayed would be more validated if it wasn't so bias.

You can't burn down the community when it comes to a case like this; But go about your merry way when babies are dying in drive by shootings. Or when some old lady is getting raped and killed by some local dope addict.

it sure is . . . and i think it's appropriate to combine murder stats with drug deaths . . . i wonder what the $ impact is to the dealers?

Baltimore, Maryland (PRWEB) April 17, 2015

The city of Baltimore is no stranger to addiction. Last year the death toll attributed to drug related deaths (overdoses and the like) exceeded the murder rate; heroin careened to a whopping 143 overdose deaths alone, according to ABC2 on April 2nd; the article quotes City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen, Its estimated that we have about 19,000 people in our city who are using heroin

& targeting libraries? Libraries are probably the greatest resource for all people & to destroy a library in your own community is particularly vicious & stupid. Makes me want to weep & crack a few skulls at the same time (metaphorical, I am not a violent person). I am not seeing any logic or reason in this behavior (getting the attention of LE? GMAFB)

my apologies for quoting myself . . . but wanted to keep all this data in 1 post . . . add to the above the # of single family households.

76. Baltimore, MD (housing, pop. 651,154): 59.2%

I honestly don't believe the library was a target -- it looked like one of the "flash bombs" (whether it was tear gas or pepper spray or whatever) that was shot into the crowd & then thrown back at the officers caught some trash on fire next to the library

at least that is what it appeared to be on the live stream last night :)

Thank you!!!

This is what I don't understand -- "your" community is a toilet with no commercialism, no jobs, high crime, poor education systems, abandoned houses, and you continue to elect the SAME people ?! And you continue to trash the area ?! But I guess if you don't own where you live, you have no skin in the game, so to speak . . .

What happened to taking responsibility for your community or even your SELF ?! I've seen many beautiful areas in StL City & North County turn into blighted messes in less than 25 yrs ! And the powers that be question "white flight" . . . no one focuses on the Root Cause & try to find solutions starting at the root

on this morning' joe's program, the congressman was called out on the 25? yr old blighted area to the right of the train station & why he hasn't fixed it. he hemmed and hawwed and came up with an answer = it's a reminder to people of what happened . . . basically he couldn't answer where all the $ congress has sent him.
