George Zimmerman's Attorneys File Motion To Delay Trayvon Martin Trial

By MIKE SCHNEIDER 01/30/13 06:30 PM ET EST Associated Press

"ORLANDO, Fla. — Attorneys for the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with shooting Trayvon Martin to death on Wednesday asked for more time to prepare his case, saying prosecutors had been slow to turn over evidence.

At the same time, Zimmerman's lead attorney, Mark O'Mara, renewed his request for donations to Zimmerman's legal defense, which he said could cost up to $1 million."

*

"A hearing in which Zimmerman will argue he was acting in self-defense is scheduled for April. The judge has said that hearing will be at least 45 days before the trial."

Judge denies George Zimmerman's request to delay 'stand your ground' hearing
By Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel
3:10 pm, February 14, 2013

"SANFORD — The judge in the George Zimmerman murder case on Thursday rejected his lawyers' request to delay the start of his "stand your ground" hearing in April and ordered 500 potential jurors – more than the fire marshal allows in the Seminole County Courthouse jury room – for his June trial."

*

"She gave attorneys the option of starting it a week early – April 15. Attorneys for both sides settled on April 22, and if a second week is needed, roll into the week of April 29."

*

Thursday's hearing was quick affair, announced just the day before and requested by O'Mara, who last week lost a request to delay Zimmerman's June 10 trial.

Thursday's hearing quickly morphed into a catch-all of pending and upcoming business.

*

The next hearing is Feb. 22, when Zimmerman's attorneys will ask the judge to order Benjamin Crump, the attorney for Trayvon's family, to appear for a deposition.

........The 45-page report ultimately recommended to keep the law. In it's core findings, the panel stated "All persons who are conducting themselves in a lawful manner have a fundamental right to stand their ground and defend themselves from attack with proportionate force in ever place they have a lawful right to be."..........

The report did recommend some tweaks. They would like to see legislators review standards for neighborhood watch groups, including telling volunteers not to pursue potential suspects.

Teenage witness in Trayvon Martin case 'lied' about hospital visit, lawyer says

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/03/0...dmits-misrepresented-herself/?intcmp=trending

The case of the Florida man accused of fatally shooting unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin last year took two twists Tuesday at a monthly hearing attended by attorneys on both sides of the case.............

MyFoxOrlando.com reports defense attorney Mark O'Mara, who is representing the alleged shooter George Zimmerman, was seeking medical records for Martin's girlfriend.................

"And that [prosecutor] Mr. [John] Guy represented there would not be hospital records confirming her sworn statement, because, in fact, she lied."

Guy confirmed there were no hospital records for Witness 8............

O'Mara also said he won't need the two weeks a judge previously set aside for an immunity hearing under the state's controversial self-defense law, though the issue could be folded into the trial.

O'Mara previously stated that he hopes to wrap the "stand your ground" hearing into Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial, scheduled for June 10. He said that could still possibly happen and the judge has said she is open to it..............

The state's chief witness in the Trayvon Martin murder case lied under oath, prosecutors say.

The young woman who says she was on the phone with Martin when he encountered George Zimmerman lied about her whereabouts at another time, the prosecution told a judge Tuesday.

The woman, whose name has not been released, had told prosecutors that she was in the hospital on the day of Martin's funeral. The defense then sought her medical records.

Jose Baez: Evidence 'so weak' in George Zimmerman case

By Hal Boedeker, Staff writer, 9:02 a.m. EDT, March 10, 2013

Jose Baez turned analyst on the George Zimmerman case and gave viewers of preview of what they might see in coming months.

“I have never seen a high-profile case that is so weak as the Zimmerman case,” Baez told Lauren Rowe on WKMG-Channel 6’s “Flashpoint.” The program aired Sunday morning.

Baez said he based his view on the evidence and not on his representing Chris Serino, the lead Sanford police investigator in the case. “I just think looking at the overall case, it’s extremely weak,” Baez said. “I had that opinion from very early on in the case.”

...

Baez cited several reasons for his take on the Zimmerman evidence: The only eyewitness says that Martin was on top during the fight, and Zimmerman told law enforcement he was screaming for help during the fight, a point backed up by a 911 tape.

But Baez refused to predict an ending. “You can’t call this one without letting it play out,” he said. “You just never know what’s going to happen. You can’t call it. Trials are not scripted events.”
