WATCH THE JUDGE IN VIDEO PLAYER RIGHT

(WXYZ) -- 36th District Court Judge Ronald Giles lashed out at lawyers Tuesday morning when he learned Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who was expected to be in court for a hearing, had taken a trip to Texas.

"These hearings hold precedent over... I don't care if he's meeting with the president," Giles told lawyers. "He's to be here for these hearings. He's a defendant in a criminal proceeding. We have these hearings. He's a defendant in a criminal proceeding, period."

Kilpatrick's former chief of staff and co-defendant Christine Beatty was in court for the hearing.

Lawyers said Kilpatrick was on a business trip, but that did little to placate Giles. He said the mayor must now give 48 hours advance notice of any trip and explain why he's leaving town.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick stared blankly around his office lobby today and refused to utter a word when asked repeatedly by reporters what type of city business he was conducting in Texas the past few days.
Kilpatrick was announcing a job fair that will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Cobo Center for skilled workers.
Reporters asked him at least three times to explain the city business in Texas. His spokesman, James Canning, said "that's been answered." (more at link)

So, let me get this straight Suzi, he's calling the Judge stupid and a liar?

Yep, that ought to work out well.

In a highly unusual move, a judge Tuesday held a closed hearing over a motion filed by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's defense team to keep thousands of text messages out of public view, then sealed transcripts of the hearing.

"Closure of any criminal trial or pretrial proceeding is highly suspect," said Herschel Fink, a First Amendment attorney who represents the Free Press. "The public needs to feel that the whole process is transparent. This undermines the public's confidence and is highly improper."

Embattled Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, his ex-top aide and lawyers involved in an $8.4 million whistle-blowers' settlement could be asked to give depositions in a newspaper Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.

The depositions, conducted by attorneys representing the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News, are expected to be held in the second and third weeks in June.

One lawyer representing Kilpatrick during last summer's whistle-blowers' trial already has confirmed he will give a deposition, Free Press attorney Herschel Fink said Friday.

I've been searching but haven't found anything, does anyone know why Kilpatrick was in Texas?

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has vetoed $250,000 set aside by the City Council to pay for lawyers to try to remove him from office amid a text-messaging sex scandal (more at link)

Suzi, I swear this is just crazy  He keeps trying to hire more lawyers and the council vetos him and now that their trying to hire lawyers, he's vetoing them.

Detroit has gone crazy!

I'm still dying to know why he skipped out on an important court date for a super secret "city related" business trip to Texas. :waitasec:

I find it very strange no one has tracked and reported on where Kwame disappeared to that day.
