"But Stapelkamp said he believes Palmer and Bronkhorst knew they were killing Cecil.

“Both men have means. They are intelligent. You can do an Internet search for Hwange lion and a picture of Cecil pops up,” Stapelkamp [the Oxford University researcher who collared Cecil for study] said. “If you are coming to Zimbabwe to hunt a lion, you do a little bit of research. I think ignorance is no defense. They knew what they were coming for.”

(Oh no!)

The pictures killer dentist tried paying $20,000 to stop you seeing: How Dr Walter illegally shot this bear and then tried to bribe the Wisconsin guides to cover it up - 10 years before he slayed Cecil the lion

Images show Walter Palmer standing over the animal in Wisconsin in 2006

Dentist killed the black bear in a zone where he didn't have a permit

He then tried to bribe people on the hunt in a bid to cover his actions up

Palmer then lied to federal prosecutors about the slaying during their probe

He was eventually tried and pleaded guilty - but was only fined $3,000

The Minnesota native had faced five years in prison and a $250,000 fine

Gained notoriety around the world last month for killing the beloved lion

Has kept a low profile since details of his Zimbabwe hunting trip surfaced

Thanks for the link. It states that 20/20 is going to be covering the story tonight if anyone is interested.

Good suggestion! I just posted it in that thread.

Palmer's friend speaks out:

Love this quote:
He’s the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back when in need. He would be the type of guy to help anybody.

Yeah, and he's the type of guy who sexually harassed his employee. And he's the type of guy who wants his money immediately -- Payment in full right now or no dental work. And he's the type of guy who is a convicted felon -- He killed a bear in a unauthorized zone, bribed the hunting guides to cover his actions, and lied to federal prosecutors about it.

Then there's this little matter concerning Cecil the lion.....

Yeah, and he's the type of guy who will pose with the shirt off his back holding the dying body of a magnificent leopard! Probably the only reason the monster goes to the gym in the first place.

Palmer is the epitome of a narcissist and I would NEVER let him have a go at me while I was under anesthesia. Who knows what crimes he has committed. He believes he is GOD and can do whatever he wants, lie about it and suffer no repercussions.

There have been countless times in my life that I have attributed a male human's obnoxious behavior (monster trucks driven like Godzilla on the freeway, leaving small cars like mine frantically attempting to get out of their path; motorcycle engines revved up at seemingly just the right moment to produce maximum annoyance to patrons dining al fresco at a restaurant, to name just two examples) to organ size compensation, without actually having observed the organ myself for verification.

The older I get, the more it seems to me that that attribution is just as sexist as someone  saying a woman was acting that way because she was on the rag.

So I've concluded that some people are just anuses by nature and their gender has nothing to do with that.

Palmer is just such an anus. IMO of course.

Here's what I found to be the most interesting information on the 20/20 episode: Cecil's tracking collar was being moved around by someone after he had been killed, trying to make it appear that he was still alive. The researcher mapped the information from the collar and it did not follow a pattern of how Cecil would have been moving so it was obviously being moved by a person.

And they want to continue to claim that as soon as they realized they killed a research lion, they reported it and turned in the collar?

As Judge Judy would say: 'Liar, liar, pants on fire'

I thought it was the most interesting part too. Brent Stapelkamp, head of Hwange Lion Research, showed on his computer how the hunters clumsily moved Cecil's GPS collar about, attempting to mislead authorities. The collar was then destroyed and never found. Stapelkamp also said the hunters didn't contact authorities about killing Cecil. This is at odds to what Palmer's hunting guide, Theo Bronkhorst, claimed. Stapelkamp doesn't believe them at all.

I didn't watch it because I thought I'd get too angry. Thank you for this update. It is nice to have my suspicions confirmed. I always try to give people the benefit until they are proven liars.

Below is an excerpt from 20/20's Cecil episode. Stapelkamp discusses his suspicions about Cecil's GPS collar (and shows the tracking on his laptop) at 7:15 through 8:15. Skip to that part if you don't want to watch the entire video. I just hope they can bust Palmer on this.

Two things that struck me:

1. Palmer has already hunted and killed one lion. How many effing trophies does he need? Stapelkamp says Cecil is the "mascot" for the entire park and nobody can do a google search without seeing his picture, because Cecio pops up on the website of Hwange Park; Stapelkamp obviously believes this particular lion was targeted and not an accidental kill.

2. Not once did 20/20 mention that lions have decilned by more than 50% over the past 30 years, by 90% over the past century. They may not be officially "endangered" YET, but the species is obviously threatened--not just by hunting but by loss of habitat to human expansion. THIS is what is so galling about the murder of Cecil, not that he "had a name", reporter lady, but that if we don't protect lions they will soon cease to exist.

The Masai tribe in Kenya has collaborated with conservationists to teach young men to substitute human sports such as football (soccer) instead of the traditional rite of passage of killing a lion. (For centuries a young Masai warrior wasn't a "man" until he had killed his first lion. Now he tries to win an archery contest (with a target instead of live kill) or to score the most goals.)

If people as economically disadvantaged as the Masai "get it", if an armchair-zoologist such as I gets it, there's no way a rich doctor with access to internet and cable TV didn't know better.

If he feels that he did nothing wrong, and that he had the proper permits needed, why is he in hiding? Why is he not facing the crowd and showing them (and everyone else) those permits that he claims he has. Why is he not going back to Zimbabwe for his trial? His guide and the landowner aren't able to escape from theirs, why should he be allowed to? This guy is a coward.

MOO

Totally agree that Cecil was the target. It is sad that locals are lured by big money to collaborate with wealthy people who are destroying their national treasures in this way.
When I went to Tanzania, our guides told us that locals resent the wealth seen all around them generated by tourism if they are left in poverty. And that they have programs drawing recruits from villages nearby the park so that they can share the wealth in the community and get them invested in preserving their wildlife. From what I understand the Tanzanians have less corruption, but the park areas are so vast that they know poaching and illegal hunts go on at the less visited fringes of Serengeti and other National Parks.
For what it is worth, they have very strict rules about visitors not ever straying away from guides, and anyone caught traveling in the evening who is not a park employee will be assumed to be a poacher and shot on sight.

Intersting to hear this was because his wife came from money. Wonder how she feels about him using pics of Cecil to impress young waitresses? Hope she leaves him penniless and he has to work in a clinic from now on.

There is something about this man that's very ugly inside and very corrupt and I don't mean the obvious. I am reminded of the film " 8 MM" Firstly, let me say I am not accusing this dentist of being into making snuff films. In the film Nicholas Cage is trying to track down a snuff film for a billionaire's widow, that her husband had made. At some point in the film he asks the widow ''why would your husband want to do this?" And she replies ( paraphrasing) because he had bought everything he ever wanted and because he COULD because he had enough money. So at some point people with way too much money clearly become ' bored' with regular ole life and have to move on to more exciting things. Maybe not being a millionaire isn't the worst thing on earth. How many thrills can you get in Vegas? Climbing the alps? Fishing the amazon ? At what point are you so accustomed to your money continually giving you experiences , gratification and stimulation that you can find nothing satisfying in any ' routine' activities any more ?

"The Twin Cities dentist guarded his acreage and property lines so fiercely he alienated and even frightened local hunters, some Clay County residents and officials said. Run-ins with Palmer became the stuff of local hunting lore, said Clay County Commissioner Jenny Mongeau, whose district includes Palmer’s land."

"As he told the British tabloid Daily Mail, Stetz recalled Palmer once kicked his cousin Keith Stetz out of a deer stand, accusing him of hunting on his land. Stetz said Palmer had a handgun. When Keith climbed down, Stetz said he recalled Palmer telling him: “There is no excuse for ignorance.”"

Reminds me of this classic short story:

http://fiction.eserver.org/short/the_most_dangerous_game.html

ETA: UGGGH, that link has lots of typos.

The waters of the Caribbean CLOSED over his head, not DOSED over his head.

Anyway. The correct original is a great read.
