o/t just a little, but of the hundreds of students I've taught, one of my very favorites was born in East St. Louis and raised there by his grandmother. It wasn't a matter of bad neighborhoods - they were all bad, or worse. He heard gunfire every night, but they made a safe oasis on one of the more livable streets, and he made it out, and made it to, and through, college. He knew the life he wanted to avoid.

I wonder if LE asked him for a birth certificate or maybe pictures or other proof that he's the babies Daddy and he had to go home and get it.

The MSM article says LE told him to come back on Monday for a paternity test. Maybe he wanted to go and get all his documentation in addition to the test, but who knows.

I mentioned a little upthread that my husband is also an East St. Louis native. Ironically, he loved it there. He is sad that it's become something so different than it was when he was a child. He never had a problem, was never a victim of crime, and didn't know anyone (at that time) that was. There were a couple of areas everyone knew to stay away from, but otherwise, he says it was totally safe.

Nowadays, it's a different story. Even as a "native", he wouldn't be caught anywhere other than the Casino Queen after dark!

I find it a bit odd too that the baby's daddy would go all the way back home instead of staying and taking a paternity test right there and then.. in the world of technology these days any documentation he may need could have been scanned over to the authorities. My hinkymeter is up with this one. :twocents:

They told him he would have to wait until Monday. Perhaps nobody had a key to his house to get the documents or maybe he wasn't sure where they were? Just speculating... I agree him driving home is odd unless an absolute necessity.

My understanding is they wouldn't do a DNA test right then and told him he had to wait until Monday. Perhaps he went back home to wait and see if Ebony showed up there while her family searched here.

Someone mentioned that the police department might only have limited resources so maybe that is what caused the delay.

Not sure if just having a birth certificate would be sufficient in getting the child back so whatever documents he had probably wouldn't have matter IMO

I think if my baby was found abandoned and now in the hands of child services I would be making a lot of noise about getting my baby back. Come back next Monday wouldnt sit well with me especially if I just drove 7 hours to come get her. KWIM JMO

According to MSM, he wasn't given a choice. He didn't have the option of taking the test right then and there, and was told to come back on Monday to take the test. I agree that his decision to go back home, rather than spend the weekend local is a bit odd, but it wasn't his decision as to when to take the paternity test.

I also notice he doesn't seem to have updated his FB at all since Thursday. I think that might also help with the timeline of Ebony's disappearance.

I would probably cause a scene as well but CPS isn't going to just release a child that was abandoned. I am going to guess that an investigation is probably underway by CPS to make sure that the baby's father is fit to take care of him. IMO even if he did a DNA test the second he got there, CPS still wouldn't have given him the baby.

New article on Ebony http://fox2now.com/2013/01/06/mother-of-abandoned-child-is-still-missing/

confirms my suspicion that she was en route to see the cousin in neighborhood near where the baby was found but never made it. this article has name mistakes and does not give any dates from last week regarding phone calls. going to watch 10 o'clock local news to see if she is mentioned. Not enough publicity with this.

Good point.. I have an overactive hinkey today. ;)

I noticed that they have her name hyphenated: Jackson-Shelton. I wonder if she was married prior and when that ended.

I'm watching too! It's the top story on KSDK. Stay tuned!

From the news:

Family thinks police wasting precious time- she did NOT abandon her child.

A missed call is one of the few clues in the investigation.

One officer describes this as a "bizarre" case, no solid leads, investigation spans several states.

One other phone call, made by Ebony the day before she went missing- Ebony called her aunt and said she was with a friend and had her baby with them, but didn't identify the friend.

That's all, unfortunately.

And if he had lost his temper and thrown a fit, his chances of going home with the baby would decrease considerably. CPS was watching to see what his behavior was like.

For all CPS knows, the boyfriend was involved with Ebony's disappearance. They have to think that way at first, to protect the baby. JMO

.

I was watching Channel 5 as well. The missed call is heartbreaking. I flipped over and caught it on Channel 2. At least it is getting some coverage other than the hockey thing.. They should have shown what the car looks like and the plates at least. If that car was stolen I am sure it is still in the St Louis area.

I think that is a really good idea. If someone wanted to ditch a car, the airport would be a good spot (at least it is on TV and the movies:)) and if someone wanted to leave by choice then the airport is a good place to go.

Has the family checked activity on her bank account or checked with her cell phone provider? Also, it was said her car was equipped with some sort of tracking device, can't that give clues as to where the car is?

Except there are cameras all over the place. And they keep the video on file because they are digital systems usually. Airports get a lot of Homeland Security money so they have lots of hi tech security.

Did they say how the missed call was a clue?

They were just saying that was the last time the cousin heard from her. It was a very short voicemail. All she said was "can you hear me?" Or something similar. Maybe the news site will put up a video of the story later. They didn't say what time/day the call was.

I heard a couple of different theories, though I can tell you NO ONE thinks Ebony willingly abandoned her child. Slightly more popular is the theory that she became disoriented, as because of her past brain tumor, she still suffers some mental symptoms and side effects. That possibility is mostly being dismissed too, because at worst she might become a little forgetful- but never anything serious like this.

From what I understand, almost everyone- including LE- is leaning towards foul play at this time. Some people were suggesting LE search every apartment in the building the baby was found in, but I doubt that's feasible, what with privacy laws, warrants, etc.

But in the case of a missing mother, MOST everyone would allow the cops to take a quick look around their apartment, because the cops would say they have no interest in drug paraphenalia or crack in the ash tray----they are only looking for a missing woman.

And if someone does not allow them to ask questions or look inside, they can be further investigated.
