Respectfully, your argument just strengthens the thought that she indeed WAS targeted, imho, though it is possible that he did not immediately recognize her car, (which COULD indicate he was perhaps someone she had communicated with online, but had never met face to face, or possibly knew her from work, but since she took shuttle, did not know her car). If he was just randomly looking for a woman, he probably would have paid more immediate attention to the car he passed, but after passing, and walking a bit, he turned to look at that vehicle again. Then he walked to where he eventually stood and stared directly towards Naomi's car, although hers was not the only other vehicle in the parking lot. I suppose you could assume he was checking the occupant of the other car to see if they were watching him or about to get out of their car, and he undoubtedly checked out the other cars as he circled around to hers, but to me anyway, he certainly, by all appearances, was targeting Naomi.

Good point about the perp not knowing her vehicle, if on-line dating, SteveP

With online dating, women are advised to be cautious of their personal information on the first few dates. That means no info about home address, specific family info, not meeting after dark unless area well-known, meeting away from your personal vehicle. All specifically to prevent a stalking or harassment situation. So it’s very possible the perp never saw her vehicle and only had a sketchy idea of what she drove ( “Oh, it’s just an older car”, for example). Also, Nevada doesn’t require a front license plate, so from the front the state of license might not be apparent, nor would a plate number, if the perp had seen it before.

Another reason for him to have to check out all the other occupied vehicles in the parking lot to know which one was hers.

Actually NV does require front license plate with a few exceptions:

Nevada law requires most vehicles to display front and rear license plates at all times, except motorcycles and trailers, which require only a rear plate. You must display both plates if the vehicle is designed for a front plate or if the manufacturer offers an add-on bracket or frame.

Front plates are optional only if 1) the vehicle was not designed for a front plate and 2) the manufacturer did not provide an add-on bracket or other means of displaying the front plate.

License Plates

As someone who drives frequently in northern Nevada, I'd say 40% of passenger vehicles don't display a front plate

Those with front plates are usually California vehicles

I'm not arguing that statement. I live here as well and it's obviously not enforced. lol
Your post said it's not required in NV and I am simply clarifying it IS actually required per the law.

I don't think she was targeted. I think he was looking for a woman. If she was targeted he would of known what vehicle she was in. The fact that he approached the first vehicle that came into the lot said he didn't know who she was. He approached the first vehicle and stared at it then backed off. Then walked passes the canopy and to the bushes and stood.

Question: Was her vehicle already there when the witnesses car pulled in?
Actually we don't know if he was looking into cars or at his phone.

Was it Texas Equusearch by any chance? If so, it’s a volunteer ran service that is funded by donations.

Apparently, for their own reasons, which I am sure are valid, local LE has not approved a search by Texas EquuSearch, at least at this time, according to Naomi's brother. I am sure many of you here are very familiar with the group, but for those who may not be, here is a link to their website. They operate strictly off donations from individuals, business sponsorships, and grants from organizations. They currently have over 1000 members and growing, and are available to conduct searches nationwide, and worldwide.

Naomi Irion: Investigators ID witnesses; community search details

Lyon County Sheriffs Office investigators have identified witnesses they say were parked in a vehicle in the Fernley Walmart parking lot around the time 18-year-old Naomi Irion was abducted earlier this month.

Irion was last seen on March 12 at roughly 5 a.m. Her brother, Casey Valley reported her missing the following day.

On Thursday, LCSO asked for the public's help identifying a four-door sedan that entered the east side of the parking lot at roughly 5:15 a.m. on March 12. Its headlights were turned on, and a male suspect detectives are searching for walked directly in front of the sedan, authorities said.

<snip>

[Casey] Valley is organizing another search this Saturday, beginning at a parking lot behind Love's truck stop in Fernley at 825 Commerce Center Drive.

Unlike last week's search, where people brought ATV's and horses, this week's search will only be a foot search.

According to a Facebook post promoting the event, people are allowed to open carry firearms, but rifles are not allowed. Children and pets are not allowed.

Valley requested that people with military or search and rescue experience volunteer to be group leaders.

Because this a foul play case with the FBI calling it a kidnapping and we're closing in one week since the event, LE is wise to deny Texas EquuSearch, and others from helping in this early stage. Massive boots on the ground is the opposite of what you want. Smaller groups of specifically trained resources that can be rotated is ideal. Time is ticking by, LE knows who they want to deploy. This will sadly be about evidence preservation, body recovery and a suspect probably turning into a fugitive. IMO

Correction - we're closing in on two weeks since the event.

IMO this is random, the bad person probably on drugs. I think he was scouting around for a car to snatch and didn’t want to carjack a man. Young woman alone with an old car that wouldn’t have auto door locks.

Sad and awful. Who knows what he was doing or where he was trying to go.

MOO, he carjacked her, killed her quickly, and used her car to get to wherever he was trying to go.

Two weeks tomorrow :(

This is what concerns me about the coordinated searches from last weekend and tomorrow. Curious if people (family, friends, etc) can coordinate even if LE is advising against it. I know they often feel helpless and like they HAVE to do something, but sometimes it could hamper the investigation if they happen to stumble on something.

I was thinking they at least had some LE and SAR with canines at the last search. I'd have to go look but I thought so because I was glad they were doing that. I wonder if they aren't going to have those resources tomorrow?

And I wonder if LE had advised against it or not. Her family is so dedicated to keeping her name out there and doing what they can, I can't imagine them doing anything LE advised against. As hard as that may be for them

But he brought her car back and left it near where she was abducted.

Yeah. You want the car, you take the car. There's no reason to commit a kidnapping, and it doesn't make sense for the car to be found nearby.

Also if it was a carjacking and something went wrong, then her body shouldn't be missing.

This looks like a sexually motivated abduction (and likely homicide) to me.
