Thanks for all the updates folks. I just got caught up. Happy 4th of July weekend. Enjoy and stay safe :seeya:

I have a question I don't think I've seen the answer to. Did they both go out the hole in Sweat's cell, and if so, how did Matt get into Sweat's cell that night?

‘See you on the outside,’ Matt said in letter delivered to daughter in Buffalo suburb

Three days after Richard W. Matt broke out of the maximum-security prison in Dannemora, his daughter living in a Buffalo suburb received a letter from him, delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.

“I always promised you I would see you on the outside. I’m a man of my word,” a portion of the letter stated, according to information obtained by The Buffalo News from law enforcement officials.

The letter was postmarked prior to the June 6 escape and arrived June 9.

Matt, The News learned, had undergone back surgery for an injury he had suffered at some point while in prison.

So Matt was the one with the back problem...not Sweat!!!

i imagine Matt thinks he is so adorable that his daughter would love to see him.

How does seeing her in Buffalo fit in with Mexico?

How was Tillie going to know which manhole to pick them up from?

She said "power station"....so maybe they were going to escape and walk to the place they told her to pick them up. They would have told her on Friday. ??? JMO

There is a photo out there of the catwalk and TWO holes adjacent to each other. (daily Mail?) not sure. JMO

Y'know, when I look at that pic, it appears that the cell wall is plywood. Then, looking at the pic of the single hole (from inside the cell) it kinda looks like that might be plywood too. (???).

My understanding is each cell had their own hole cut. They each went out their own hole and met behind the wall.

Which is why adjacent cells became important.

The 2 holes to the cells look to be cut from inside the wall to me because they followed the frame perfectly and you would only know where the frame is if you were behind that wall.

They could have done it themselves too if they had power tools behind the wall. Maybe when Palmer let them do electric work, they managed to cut the holes while back there.

ETA: updated for clarity

What I mean from having to be inside the wall is like if anyone has ever had to find a stud or cut a hole in your pannelling or sheetrock walls. You never know where a stud is or the support studs. If you look at the holes from inside where the bed shows you can see the "studs" which are part of the frame of the wall. Those holes went right alongside and under the frame perfectly. If you were behind the wall you would know exactly where to cut but if you are inside the cell you have no idea when you would hit the stud.
So to me it shows they cut them from behind the wall.

Look at 5th picture down in link and look at the tan frame studs. You would only know where to cut from inside the wall. You could do that from inside the cell but you would have a bunch of trial and error cuts in other places before you found that frame. It looks like someone inside that wall just made perfectly placed cuts.

How Did They Get Out? Testing the
Tools the Escapees Could Have Used

The New York Times asked Paul Monck, a boilermaker and instructor at Lincoln Technical Institute, in Union, N.J., to run a series of tests on a three-foot section of carbon-steel pipe similar to the one in the prison that the inmates cut and crawled through to escape. The tests involved several tools that could have been used, including a hacksaw. We measured how far Mr. Monck was able cut with each tool in five minutes. We also measured how noisy each tool was.

There were holes cut in both of their cell walls

My hubby is not a boilermaker but worked in big construction.

He said that a grinder is incredibly noisy and would never make a smooth cut.

He said there is no way it could be done with a hack saw unless he had forever as a time option and at least 50 blades. And not only that, the saw it self would not work . There would have to be some special kind of handle.

He said a plasma cutter is silent and would do it in minutes. It needs electricity and it is somewhat large.

He thinks somehow a contractor helped out.

That was extremely helpful in understanding the process. So it seems like it would be possible to cut it by hand with a hacksaw blade at about 20 hours. I still question how relatively straight the cuts were. Also I see no indication that that a starter hole was used to get the hacksaw blade going. Is there another way to use the hacksaw blade to get a starter hole going? Possibly starting your cut with the blade parallel to the pipe until it cut through then used the blade at a 45 degree angle.

I wonder what the real deal is on that backpack. Was there something suspicious that they found in there or do they think it possibly was given/hidden for them because no one has claimed it stolen yet?

And while we're at it, where did all the pop tarts come from, and knives, and camo clothes... to name a few. One would think that people who have camps would be interested in finding out if the two broke in. JMO HMMM maybe all the goodies were already IN the backpack.

So...on their practice run on Thursday night, they came out a different manhole, but it was too close to a number of houses, so on the night of the escape, they chose a different manhole.

Which means two manhole chains and locks were cut from the inside.

Was the one that Cuomo and company inspected at the intersection of Barker and Bouck Streets the one they actually escaped from....or was it the one from their dry-run the night before?

Either way, IMO it seems kinda like it was shoddy investigative work on their part to not realize there were two manholes that had been opened from the inside within the prior 24-36 hours.

How would you make the longer cut?

I don't know, but if Sweat has been so forthcoming and truthful about everything like being the mastermind and doing all that sawing himself by hand, why won't he tell them where he got that backpack from?
