Im from Waterloo Ontario, We have a very large Amish community a few minutes away, in Elmira and St Jacobs. Fiance works in Elmira we are keeping are eyes open.

Familiar and heard of Elmira, but not St Jacobs, they close to each other?

Maybe the map is right. Why don't they stop calling it Mt. Alone Rd. If it is along Hwy 812, then it's Mt. Lona Rd.

Here is a map where we can see the relative distance between Mt. alone .road... And Mt. Lona Road...

the names are so similar... It can be confusing...

" The St. Lawrence Co. Sheriff's has activated the New York State AMBER Alert and is investigating a confirmed child abduction that occurred on State Hwy. 812/Mt. Alone Rd., in Town of Oswegatchie at about 7:20 PM on 8/13/2014.

The CHILD, FM is a White female, approximately 12 years old with brown hair and brown eyes. She is approximately 5 feet tall and weighs about 90 pounds. FM was last seen wearing dark blue dress with blue apron and black bonnet. The victim is also cross-eyed.

The CHILD, DM is a White female, approximately 6 years old with brown hair and brown eyes. She is approximately 4 feet tall and weighs about 50 pounds. DM was last seen wearing dark blue dress with blue apron and black bonnet. Victim has round scar on forehead and is missing front teeth.

The VEHICLE has been identified as White 4-door sedan. Vehicle is small with unknown plate number.

Two female Amish victims went to their roadside stand to wait on a customer in a small white 4-door sedan. Witness saw passenger of vehicle throw something in back then get in back seat. Vehicle left scene and victims were gone.

Anyone with any information on this abduction is asked to call the St. Lawrence Co. Sheriff's at (866)N Y S-AMBER or dial 911 to provide information on a report or sighting."

People are allowed to leave the amish though, they even have rumspringer sp? where the teens go and live like non amish and try forbidden things like movies and electricity etc. Then they have to choose to come back to the amish church and way of life. If they choose not to they are shunned i think, or at least they no longer live with families etc. but it isn't something terrible that they are forced to live forever

Exactly. I have been acquainted with two Amish men--we used to sell them lumber at my former job--I got to know them pretty well. Even went and visited them in Illinois. Anyway, I highly highly doubt this is an ex-Amish member doing this to rescue them.

In NYS, they will not issue an amber alert if it is a biological parent who took the child. It becomes a "custody issue" and is referred to family courts. The police usually won't even write a report. Unless it violates an existing court order, and even then, it's not a criminal report. It just basically documents the "violation" of court order so it can be referred to in family court.

Just an FYI.

This is so scary because it's right near our summer house.

Unless the child is endanger they will. And its always documented here in Long Island, NY.

Some of the comments here sound strange to me, I live not that far from here and have relatives living in Ogdensburg, right near where the girls were abducted from, Have visited area frequently and have seen many, many Amish folk at Walmart, Price Chopper and roadside stands.

I have never heard disparaging remarks about the Amish, have not seen them being treated badly, their lifestyle is curious to those of us not Amish, there carriages, their horses, their beautiful sheds and their lovely vegetable.

I do not understand dragging up what ifs, about puppy mills etc. Come on, this is a family/community that is devastated.
We are not used to abductions, we are so sad today.

And kids in that area certainly are not strong swimmers, goodness, that is a first, do u not understand the strong currents in the St. Lawrence river?? And other rivers in the area have very strong currents. Kids in this area of NY state prefer to go in community pools.

Ditto, maybe it was a close as they dare to show her actual face, one of the girls is cross-eyed- maybe that could be a clue to her identity- especially if she is wearing sunglasses now. imo
