No news on KV, but Channel 5 (NYC) just reported that LE has received hundreds of tips regarding the Vanessa Marcotte murder. Last I heard, KV's case has only received three. I just don't understand that. Someone must have seen something useful. I hope people in HB aren't too afraid to talk.

I think in the days after the rape and murder, someone noticed injuries on a relative, friend, boyfriend and haven't come forward with that info. It's not too late...speak up! Do not let this crime happen again, to someone else.

You need to see the predators that are around there.

It's probably some guy that lives in a mens shelter where most of the other residents of the shelter wouldn't think twice about another resident. Jmo.

I truly don't believe that the perp is surrounded by a circle of family or friends or lovers that would notice anything. Jmo for now.

Hi everyone. First I want to say that it deeply saddens me that these types of crimes happen in this country and the perpetrator in some cases get away with it. Wouldn't you love to stop one of these psychopaths? It makes me so sad and angry at the same time.
Also, regarding the level of brutality in this crime. Some of the most horrid and vicious crimes I've seen have been committed by serial killers, not necessarily "friends" with the victim. A hatred for women in general can be behind some of the awful things they do and also trying to subdue their subject. I really wish I could catch these people. It just sickens me to no end and I cannot even imagine what the family is going through. The father must feel awfully guilty for not going that day, even though he is not at fault. I would keep repeating the events in my mind thinking of what I could have done differently to affect the outcome. It's just really sad. I also believe there may be a connection between this crime and that in Mass. For whatever reason, maybe he wanted to eliminate a tie to the previous crime by burning the body of DNA evidence. From what I recall, I believe if a criminal is committing acts across state lines, the FBI gets involved. I guess we will all find out soon enough.

In this article, at the bottom is a photo slide show. The fourth picture is the one I was talking about. It's an areal view of where she was found, showing at the bottom left the houses which seem not far away at all, and I see no "entrance" to the path leading into the weeds where a camera could be located.

Very unusual for LE to let family search - but since he was in fire rescue, seems they couldn't or wouldn't stop him - and he knew the trails she ran better than anyone... So sad, cannot imagine what he went through and how it will haunt him!

This is a tragedy. But I need to ask the questions that no one else is asking...
1.This young woman worked at a restaurant as a "caterer" according to news reports. However, she recently traveled to St Tropez and Spain and Greece. Those are expensive trips. Where did she get the money or were they paid by someone or did she have other income?
2. The father "returned to the scene of the crime" I think this will be scrutinized by LE
3. The young lady was 30 years old and living at home? I know this is not uncommon but I think this is a little strange, especially since she apparently had enough money to travel the world. I did read that the mother is suffering from an illness so that may be why she lives at home.
4.The father was on "disability" from FDNY for a back injury? Yet, he runs regularly with his daughter?
5. There have been statements in media that there was a rocky relationship with an ex boyfriend, however, we have not heard anything about that individual being questioned.
6. This may be the result of a vagrant or transient, however, this young lady is extremely physically fit. Maybe there was more than one perp?
I hope they solve this murder quickly.

Just a curious thought. I thought at first her mom had already died.

BBM I had a nephew who was diagnosed with cancer and from that day on he didn't want to see family
and I am sure that no pictures were taken. We tried to visit him but he stayed inside his room and didn't want
anyone to see him. Of course his cancer was melanoma which was on his neck cheek..so
the surgery made him feel conscious I would say. He died at a young age of 40.

Hello folks...Sadly another tragic random sexual predator murder incident.. Including the abduction/murder of bicyclist Sierah Joughin<OH> on 07/19/2016, this makes three innocent victims lives taken, just in the past three weeks. Statistics say that these random stranger abduction/murder incidents are rare. These rare events seem to be commonplace as of late. Tragic...

The father was initially allowed to assist by showing investigators Karina Vetrano's normal jogging route. I'm guessing that normal search protocol was relaxed due to the father being retired NYFD, nor did they expect to find the remains of another innocent victim of this silent epidemic..

I am a little skeptical that these two sexual assaults/murders are related due to the geographical distance and variations in signatures. Granted, we don't have information privy to investigators, and it would behoove the NYPD and the Massachusetts State Police to link them to increase awareness and media coverage, as well as to qualify for additional FBI resources. imo.

The Vetrano and Marcotte case made it to the news in my country (Germany). This is how i found this very informative website. My native language is not english so please excuse my potential spelling mistakes.

The Vetrano murder reminds me of a similar case when a female inline skater was raped and killed couple of years ago just when i began studying crimonology at the university over here.

Sometimes just very little details make a sex crime happen. I read somewhere that Karina send a text message from her phone to someone just when she was attacked. If this is true, she was not a "moving target", but have stopped running and stand till during texting. Just in case it was a crime of opportunity and there was a person with the potential of a rapist maybe he had the chance to look at her for some seconds and "studying" her body - and in this very short time he lost his self-control and decided to rape her because he was sexually aroused a lot, maybe by a single details of her body or her whole appearance.
If a female jogger is a "moving target" sometimes the timeframe for a person with a criminal potential is too short for losing self-control and proceed from just watching to become active and commit a crime.

I agree that she probably slowed down then stopped if she was texting and she probably was looking downward. Plus, I think she also had ear buds in her ears. She didn't seem to sense any danger, so I take it to mean she hadn't spotted anyone dangerous lurking around earlier.

You shared an interesting thought about the moment of attack sometimes passing if the jogger is a moving target.

I've been fighting in my head over whether KV & VM's deaths were related, I know they lived a distance apart but does anybody remember Adam Leroy Lane " The Highway Killer "?? He was a long haul truck driver who, while on route, killed 2 women & attempted 2 other women in the Northeast ( Murders in: Harrisburg, P.A., Bloomsbury, N.J., & Attempted murders in: York County, P.A. & Chlemsford, M.A. ) in 2007. All the victims had distance between them, but were related & all were random acts. Just a thought.

Hi All- Local here. I have been wanting to post for a few days now, was waiting for my account to be activated. I couldn't remember my login credentials back from when I use to post on the Hailey Dunn board!

I just wanted to give a little information for non locals to better understand the area. I am about 3 miles from the location of which Karina was found. My brother's in-laws live on the other side of the Belt Parkway (considered Lindenwood) on 78th St, and right behind their house are the marshes. So I am familiar with the area. I have also biked from the Gateway Center (mall, off Erskin St exit on Belt Pkwy) to Howard Beach (Crossbay Blvd area). There are many entrances (technically not man made entrances, but someone could definitely climb in to the marshes) from the bike path that runs parallel to the Belt Parkway. Someone can easily come from the Gateway Center Mall and cross the overpass and onto the bike path. The Bike path lets out onto 78th Street. Gateway Center Mall is located in a not so well area (East New York), there are many men shelters in that area as well. There have been times when I have been at my brother's in-laws for a party and leave late at night and go to my car (which I park right in front of the gated marshes) and it is pitch black back there. I have come across strange men walking back there (but just passed them off as homeless men, which I am pretty sure they were) If I had to pick up my nephew I would double park in the front of the house, instead of parking by the marshes for safety.

I am currently posting this on a computer, and will follow up with maps I have screenshotted of the area and noted the bike paths etc along Spring Creek Park. Now I have seen many comment on the word "park", this technically is not a park like you and I would consider a park to be. As you know the weeds are very high and there are just paths cut out. This isn't a true "park". I believe it should be created into a park now to honor Karina, where it would be safe for everyone to go, women to joj, and kids to play.

One other thing I have observed, I never thought it was accessible by boat, because no one ever talks about taking a boat ride over to Spring Creek Park. However, if you google map "Gateway Center" and zoom over to Spring Creek you will see a small white boat around the area where Karina's body was found. Google Map pictures were most likely taken years ago, however this is something to think of. Why was there a random white boat on the shore? This boat is not viewable if you search "Spring Creek Park" because the words are actually over the boat, so you would have to zoom into the area of Spring Creek to see the boat. I will post a follow up post from my phone with the photos.

Sorry for such a long all over the place (probably typos) post. I have been wanting to post for a few days but waiting on account activation now has made my thoughts all over the place!! Being a local I find myself looking at EVERY person I pass by, for cuts, scrapes, bruises, bites. Which I hope everyone in the area and outer areas are doing as well. I work in Manhattan and even look at every passerby here as well!
