YOUNGSTOWN — One of two people charged with the murder of a missing woman found chopped up in a freezer entered guilty pleas in the case today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Katrina Layton, 34, of Mahoning Avenue, pleaded guilty before Judge Lou D'Apolito to charges of obstructing justice and abuse of a corpse, both fifth degree felonies.

Layton gave a statement to prosecutors about the crime before she gave her plea.

Prosecutors are recommending probation as long as she cooperates and testifies against Novoa in his March 5 trial.

Thirty-four-year-old Katrina Layton appeared in Mahoning County Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to obstructing justice and abuse of a corpse.

Layton was originally charged aggravated murder, murder, and tampering with evidence as well.

Novoa is scheduled to appear in court next week (Feb. 13th) for the final pre-trial before a jury trial in March.

A hearing is held for the man accused of aggravated murder in the death of Shannon Graves found in a freezer in July.

The murder victim's family is outraged that the murder charge has been dismissed against that man's co-defendant and a deal cut so she faces lesser charges to testify against him.

31-year-old Arturo Novoa will go on trial on August 5th.

Novoa's attorneys have filed a motion wanting to get copies of jail telephone calls between their client and his co-defendent Katrina Layton, as well as co-defendent Katrina Layton's criminal history.

Novoa faces charges of Aggravated Murder and Abuse of a Corpse for allegedly killing and dismembering Shannon Graves.

Co-defendant in murder case investigated for contacting witness

The co-defendant in the death of a woman whose body was found in a freezer last summer is being investigated for intimidating a witness.

Reports said a man made a report Friday with police that said Katrina Layton, 35, free on bail after pleading to reduced charges in the death of Shannon Elizabeth Graves, sent him a Facebook message with a thumbs-up sign.

The man made the report about 6 p.m. Friday and is a witness in the case, the police report said. The man told the officer he thinks the thumbs-up sign he received from Layton means that she got away with murder.
