School shootings have always occurred. The reporting on them is much stronger now. This link goes through all the years from 1700-current. With several big ones happening in the late 1700's - early 1980's when you attended school. You just didn't hear about them.

Since 2005 the number killed from school shootings has DRASTICALLY decreased.

I noticed school shootings in the past were often motivated by discipline issues and the victims were teachers. School shootings were common in the past, but did not result in high body counts for the most part. Also, the school shooters were equally adults or children. Some were teachers and even principals. The deadliest schoolyard massacre to this day happened in 1927.

I recall the common stereotype of school shooters were either drug addicts or bullies. School shootings are more publicized today than they were in the past.

You're right. That is the key, pre-meditation. The defense is going to say there was none, that he was a confused, mentally disturbed teenager or something like that. The prosecution will have to prove premeditation, and I don't think at this point that will be very hard, but who knows.

That's the outcome one would hope for. However, I see an insanity defense. Mitigating circumstances being extreme violence exposure in the home. He didn't stand a chance, etc. Not saying it will fly, but it could.

I felt terribly for the grandfather who looked really shaken when he came into the court room. The grandmother was comforting him, rubbing his back. How horrible this must be for them. Does anyone know if these grandparents are paternal or maternal ?

In my opinion, no way does an insanity defense stand a chance. I'll repeat, they are almost impossible to succeed with. Andrea Yates, who was totally insane, did not succeed during her first trial. Jared Loughner will try but even though he's clearly schizophrenic, it will be very difficult to to succeed. And this kid doesn't appear to be any Yates or Loughner, both of whom had long psychiatric histories and bizarre behavior leading up to the murders.

I remember him well. Just a slip of a kid, very shy, sad thing. But he murdered two and wounded 13, I think.

He is currently serving 50 to life.

First mistake of the defense,he didn't know the victims,there is proof he did.One of them was dating his ex-girlfriend.He was friends with them at one time from reports.I bet his juvenile record is a humdinger.

Don't forget there is surveillance tape from the cafeteria. He turned himself in as the shooter. His life is over. My heart breaks for all the Victims, Family and all those affected by this tragedy. The neighbor who was interviewed on HLN was just devastated and devastating to watch. Just a gut feeling but a guess that his Parents dont give a hoot about him now and prior to this.

Well, he doesn't go to the school and he brought several weapons there. premeditation will be very easy to prove. (IMO).

Well, you see, the poor kid just happened to find himself blazing away with a handgun yesterday and can't figure out what happened. That's the way the defense seems to be heading, from the attorney's earlier spin.

two other kids (make that seven since he missed five times ) are very lucky

Tomorrow 2/29 3:30 Motion by media for release of documents

Next Tues. 3/6 3:00 For arraignment and formal charges

3/19 9 AM Hearing for probable cause to move to adult court.

Well, he doesn't go to the school and he brought several weapons there. premeditation will be very easy to prove. (IMO).

Good. I am very glad you said that. That's what I thought, I but I wasn't sure. This should be a short case, and he will probably spend the rest of his life in jail.

There is only one family member listed as a "friend," his sister SL. If you are referring to the fair-haired woman sitting to the left of the grandfather, I don't believe that was her.

I saved several pages and my first and second caches list 153 friends but people started unfriending him. In the time it took me to cache the third page, his friends had dropped to 146.

If this was a random shooting,then why shoot at just the kids that were seated at the table in front of him.Why not all around him? The one kid Nate that was sitting at that table,admitted he was friends with him at one time.He is the one that got grazed on the ear by a bullet.
