Not a surprise to me. In 1978, my high school was 3,000 kids. My graduating class was 1,000 alone! You couldn't know everyone. The last reunion I went to -lots of people were going, "Did I go to high school with you???"

Older than you and my class was also over 1,000.

I was thinking the same thing and didn't want to say. Didn't it take them a long time to positively ID the Virginia Tech guy? (Don't want to say his name)

Uggh. I didn't even think of that. But they all shoot themselves in the head and their names are released within hours. Maybe he was not carrying Identification. Surely, witnesses, other students verbally identified him. Unless, they didn't know him.

I know. Both Lanza and Rodgers refused and did not take their medication. Rodger's were Antipsychotics. Both were well documented as having serious mental health and psychosocial issues.

Actually, it was Lanza's mom that refused to have him take it. Of course, that's a whole other issue. I seriously doubt he would have taken it himself anyway.

I do not want to derail the thread with it which is why I am not getting into it. Its a huge and important, complex, and layered issue. And yes, problem, population, and arena are a part of it.

But it is still a different typology all together with its own set of social issues behind it. Issues that I am passionate about.

Drive bys are not the same as school, mass, and rampage shootings. They generally involve a specific person, group or target. They are more personal.

These are not. They are blind rage at humanity and they are largely committed by white males of privilege in affluent or middle class communities. (which is probably why many don't suspect them or become suspicious of them to begin with, their privilege) These shooters are certainly not dealing with the level of oppressions and barriers the youth of Chicago are bearing on a daily basis.

There are many differences that set these shooting apart from drive-by's.

The documentary "The Interrupters" by PBS centers around all of the epidemic street violence in Chicago. I had to watch it and write a case summary on it for a Macro Social Work class recently. It was an excellent film and example of a need for Macro Social Work address so many long standing problems in America.

To invest in the neighborhoods and empower the residents. Chronic oppression, social barriers, and neglect contribute to Chicago and a lack of investment in the neighborhoods and most importantly the residents. Issues of socio economic status, institutional racism, and systemic neglect are at the heart of the problem in Chicago. So is mental illness, PTSD, trauma, and everything else we have tossed around in this thread.

I maintain, that these shootings differ from each other in almost every way. The horrific and unfortunate thing they have in common is the senseless death of children and innocents. They are equally important but they are different.

These are not. They are blind rage at humanity. That is what I was trying to say on theohter thread. Most of these are scarier cause its just any human bang godobye. Like it makes sense, if you will, that a robber shoots a bank teller. Most of these are either againist broad entiites (woman/ govt) that is different even than a spouse.

AN I think it rattles people in this context differently. (Like the Washington DC snipers) . we all go to malls, but if we are not robbing banks the liklhood of us getting shot to death feels more in our control.

What is going on these days is eating pizza, walking down a street, working in a courthouse, or being a member of LE not engaged with anyone for anything and boom.

Drugs even make sense - were not dealing drugs( I think!) so we dont relate to getting shot by another drug dealer.

I think that is aggrevating issue -feelings of power and control. just imo

Really? I always thought that he himself refused to take it. But I wouldn't doubt it. Her parenting approach was beyond questionable and totally frightening.

Mother Jones has a comprehensive guide to all of them since 1982. They update with every new one, so you should be able to calculate this Spring easily. Although it seems they haven't updated since May 24th.

I guess they are having a difficult time keeping up with the frequency at this point.

I know nothing about guns -- I wonder if a rifle destroys the head more -- i think they are gonna find he used a guitar case to get it in - kids were asked on the busses out of the area, by LE, afterwards if anyone rode in wiht a guitar case earlier. It was on the local fox affilate hours ago..............in a live segment..
