He must be going through money at a ferocious clip. He had already blown though the extortion money...is it all gambling? Drugs? I really think the efforts posters here have made to figure out the financials are important. $11,000 is a lot of money for Stephany to be carrying around, although I suppose casinos are just the place to find people with cash.

And that could affect his bottom line. I can see his request for
$1mil (interview) suddenly dropped to "$12.99/hr + a box of Kleenex".
This guy has no sense of reality? He has flooded the market and now
must sell cheap.

Sex Trafficking Investigation Focuses on van der Sloot

(July 19) -- Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch native charged with killing a Peruvian woman and extorting money from the mother of missing U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, may have even more legal problems ahead.

Earlier this month, the National Enquirer reported on van der Sloot's alleged involvement in sex trafficking in Thailand. Now Peru's minister of justice has confirmed that Thai authorities are pursuing criminal charges against van der Sloot, according to CBS News.

"The penalty of Dutchman Joran van der Sloot could increase because the last review was performed psychiatric determined that suffers from psychopathy, which indicates that a man is fully conscious of his actions, he said Rolando Pomalima psychiatrist."

I think that what this crazy translation is trying to say is Joran is capable of standing trial and the insanity plea would not be possible, since he was fully aware of his actions.

"The attorney who represented Joran van der Sloot during his confession in the case of the killing of a Peruvian woman says that van der Sloot hired her to be his attorney, contradicting a claim he makes in a pending lawsuit.

Van der Sloot ... sued attorney Luz Marina Romero Chinchay ... [with] claims that Romero was imposed on him and that she became involved because she was in a relationship with a police officer.

... Romero said she became involved with van der Sloot after learning that he refused a state-appointed attorney and requested a private attorney.

"She denies she was working with the authorities, but doesn't say who arranged for her to meet Joran in the first place."

http://www.talkleft.com/story/2010/7/20/3221/24830

I noticed the same thing when first reading the CNN report. In the article, she doesn't deny that she "became involved because she was in a relationshop with a police officer", as charged by JVDS. If Joran didn't know this, it may justify his claim against her. Let's hope not!!!

van der Sloot showing "psychopathic tendencies"

The latest development is the AFP news service quoting the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio. AFP says the paper's website reports van der Sloot was examined by doctors from Peru's Institute of Legal Medicine, who found him to be "impulsive and showing psychopathic tendencies."
No WAY! Now that's absolutely crazy, isn't it? The guy's a psychopath/sociopath? Whoever could arrive at such a conclusion?

(Big tongue in big cheek.)

I'm absolutely flabbergastd. ehem. ehem. sputter.

LOL! Who woulda thunk it, huh?

Good to see it diagnosed by a professional, though - and that it could lead to a stiffer penalty for him.

I'm glad to see some news start to trickle through again. :)

Food for Thought: You know, he's not much of a gambler. If he had kept this attorney who he says supposedly has a relationship with an officer, in some ways, it might have been to his benefit. JMHO

So many choices for Joran ~ prison in Peru, prison in Thailand, prison in the US. :waitasec: Personally I think Thailand might be the best for him. :D

Oh... you know how he fancies himself the world traveler. He's so special, I think he should be able to sample ALL of them - for the rest of his miserable life.

Just save the US for last ~ wouldn't want him to miss the experience in Peru and Thailand ~ that is if he survives either. ;)

Joran Van der Sloot faces more charges

Charges seem to be mounting for Joran Van der Sloot who is already being held for the murder of a Peruvian girl and trying to extort money from the family of Natalee Holloway.

It started out as an article in the National Enquirer in the early part of July, but now it turns out what seemed like a tabloid cover might actually be true. Joran Van der Sloot who is being held on charges of murdering a Peruvian girl, has long been a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, and is facing charges he tried extroting money from the Holloway family, now is being tied to a sex trafficking charge in Thailand.

Thai officials have informed officials in Peru that they are pursuing charges of sex trafficking against Van der Sloot. He has long been rumored to be associated with illegal sex trading.

This reminds me, and it's something I can't shake from my mind, the words of Stepheny's father when he said that Stepheny was the happiest she had ever been that weekend.
Yet other records/reports show that the family had not seen Stepheny since the Friday, so how would they know? From friends?
I remember reading that a friend of Stephany's had said that.

The Chilean currency is the Peso, all transactions done in Chile are done in pesos. If people have foreign money they have to exchange it, just like in the USA where you cannot pay with a Mexican peso either. There is always a transaction fee when money is exchanged from one currency to another.
Sol is the Peruvian equivalent of the peso and the currency of Peru.

In Peru dollars are more or less accepted at most businesses... You can take out US dollars or soles from ATMs, credit/debit cards usually work in soles and dollars at the same time (without converting). I think Chile works more exclusively with Chilean pesos...

Welcome back, Danielabc! Thanks so much for the info on the use of dollars in Peru.

If you've ready the posts, there's been an ongoing discussion about whether the currency amounts being quoted (and translated) in the news links are in soles or in dollars! It helps to know that both are acceptable in Peru. We were especially interested in whether the casino winnings were or could be in dollars....and now we know the answer is 'YES'!!

Even though I don't speak Spanish, I've found that I have to look back at the original article in Spanish to determine if the currency amount was quoted in soles or dollars to determine the correct dollar amount.

Joran Van der Sloot was again denied to testify before the judge and prosecutor

Lima (Peru.com) .- The Netherlands citizen Joran van der Sloot is again denied to testify before the judge and the prosecutor leading the case for the murder of the young Stephnay Flores, although he requested it make a preliminary statement last Tuesday.

The foreigner just would have told the authorities he has a habeas corpus process and therefore this is not resolved not declare.

Regarding the computer deslacrado the Dutchman, counsel argued that the content of this will be made available to the court within a period of 10 days and therefore can not yet reveal the contents.

This article is dated Wednesday, July 21 and is a rough translation. Do you all take the "last Tuesday" to mean yesterday and that the contents of the computer will be available 10 days from yesterday/today? I'm looking for another version to verify.

I came across the following article of interest while trying to confirm the above:

Temperature in Lima fell to 8.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the last 40 years

Also, humidity levels in the city are between 85 and 90 percent and does not rule out the presence of showers in the coming days, especially in the early morning hours.

Aww... COLD and damp in a Peruvian prison. :D

Netherlands remains silent murderer

Again refused to testify before the judge and prosecutor for the death of Stephany Flores.

RPP reported, the Flores family's lawyer, Edward Alvarez said Joran van der Sloot had asked representatives testify before the Judiciary. But the arrival of these to the Miguel Castro Castro prison, refused to discuss the case.

Wow! I find it hard to believe that he's fighting their legal system....he's going to tick the court off so much that they'll find him guilty without even considering the evidence!!! Don't they have contempt of court in Peru??

The current judge already ruled against the habeas corpus on June 25....so, now is Joran going to remain silent until the Supreme Court rules on his appeal submitted on June 30?? And if they deny it, then to the Inter-American Court??

Guess he must really like it in Castro Castro since he's writing himself a ticket for a very long stay....before this even gets to trial !!!

Maybe it's time to introduce him to the delights of the general population!!

To some degree you are correct, in Lima's large stores or restaurants that serve tourists.. yes.
Outside of Lima you will have to pay for all services in Soles and if you are very lucky they might accept a credit card.
You must also remember when you go any where in the world without the language, foreign money and not knowing the territory of where you are, you are very vulnerable, as a tourist is great and lots of fun, as someone on the run... not so sure.
Here is some information of the money rules of Peru:
