Van der Sloot arrives at Lima police headquartersBy the CNN Wire StaffJune 5, 2010 11:05 p.m. EDT

The Dutch Consulate is now involved in the case and has volunteered a defense attorney for van der Sloot, according to Carlos Neyra, a spokesman for the Peruvian Investigative Police.

Gonzalo said van der Sloot has asked for his mother, though authorities couldn't confirm whether she's coming to Lima.

Surveillance video from a casino on May 30 shows Flores and van der Sloot playing cards at the same table, he said. The woman won about 5,000 soles (about $1,755), though it was not found in the room or the victim's car, Gonzalo said.

He said "they found bloodied clothes with" van der Sloot and that investigators are testing them, as well as the tennis racquet, for DNA

I'm looking for the article that states LE has said it was the tennis racquet and there was no baseball bat. This article refers to the racquet being found and tested.

In the video look at his hand at the front desk. He is rolling his fingers like playing poker. His poker face is on. When he steps out in the hall a few hours later. His eyes are wide open inside light of room still on and when he walks past the desk he slows down yet makes sure his dufflel bag goes first before him out the door.

In the video, you can see JVDS hesitate and glance towards the desk looking to see if someone is there, and keeps on going.

I've never seen ruffie packaging either. I was slipped one in my 20's I'm sure (thank goodness for lovely girlfiriends who got me home safely). My daughter was slipped one too when she was in college. I'll call her tomorrow and ask her what she knows about packaging and looks. She's a bio major halfway through her masters and street smart toboot!

Oh good Krowdkat, I'll be watching for your post. xox

I look at the video and see a young woman who looks

down in the dumps, despondent, like she had a fight with someone

and is looking for a place to crash, maybe she couldn't go home.

I'm not buying the whole story that is coming out of Peru. Her

father is a man who ran for president twice, was he unhappy with his

daughter hanging out at casinos until all hours of the night? Was

she dis-honoring the family name with her choices? Could Joran be a

patsy? I don't mind if they throw his *advertiser censored* in a jail for life, but

I want to see more then edited vidoes. He should do the time for the

crime he has committed not because he is hated for the Hollaway case.

This is the first time I have heard this!

When investigators questioned the workers, he told them that van der Sloot told him "don't bother my girl." Van der Sloot indicated that he would be returning to the room, according to the worker. The hotel workers became suspicious after no one else left the room, and eventually a foul smell came from it, Gonzalo said. It wasn't immediately clear how much time lapsed between the conversation on video and workers noticing the smell.

Translation: If I need this footage later, I want everyone to see how relaxed I was leaving the hotel (Couldn't walk any slower now, could he?). And didn't you see me when we entered - didn't lay a hand on her, barely said a word to her. She knew what the deal was. She was curious.

I still can't get over the fact the hotel worker didn't check the room for 72 hours...didn't he find it odd that JVDS just disappeared!

I think that for reasons we can all appreciate, statements by victims' families often tend to be given to hyperbole. If I were still a young man, I honestly can't imagine how I could cope with the news of my sister's death.

I agree with you......the young man wasn't the one who identified her. He stated his brother ( whose wife had searched JVDS name on the internet) told him it was very hard to recognize her / her face had been beaten so bad / that she was stabbed many, many times & her eye was cut out & that she had a broken neck. It made me sick to hear it!!!

God Bless the families & the victims of this maniac......swift justice couldn't come to a more deserving person!!!!

Here is some information discussing Roofies and GHB
(I give you this information as a clinical pharmacist with decades of experience - and professional experience with addiction and street drugs). Eyes

* rohypnol
* rape

Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) -- more casually known as the "date rape" drug -- has become well-known. Though the drug has medicinal purposes, its powerful effects have scarily been used to incapacitate women during sexual assault -- namely, rape.

Besides "date rape" drug, you may have heard Rohypnol referred to by these other names:

* rophies; roofies
* R2
* roofenol
* Roche
* roach-2; roachies; la rocha
* rope; roopies; ropies
* rib
* circles
* Mexican valium
* the forget Pill
* trip-and-fall
* mind-erasers

Rohypnol is not manufactured or sold legally in the United States. However, it is produced (by Hoffman-La Roche) and sold legally with a prescription in Europe and Latin America, where it is used as a short-term treatment for insomnia, a sedative hypnotic and a pre-anesthetic.

The drug is often smuggled into the United States by mail or delivery services.

What Happens When Someone Takes Rohypnol?
Rohypnol has physiological effects similar to Valium (diazepam), but is approximately ten times more potent.

Intoxication is generally associated with impaired judgment and motor skills. The drug has no taste or odor, so those given it don't realize what is happening. About ten minutes after ingesting the drug, a woman may feel dizzy and disoriented, simultaneously too hot and too cold, and/or nauseated. She may experience difficulty speaking and moving, and then pass out. Effects peak within two hours, and can persist for up to eight hours. Such victims have no memories of what happened while under the drug's influence.

The combination of alcohol and Rohypnol is particularly hazardous; together, their effects on memory and judgment are greater than those experienced when taking one alone. It is commonly reported that people who become intoxicated on a combination of alcohol and Rohypnol have "blackouts" lasting 8 to 24 hours following ingestion. Losing social inhibitions is another widely reported effect of Rohypnol, when taken alone or in combination with alcohol.

What Does the "Date Rape" Drug Look Like?
Rohypnol tablets are white with a score on one side and the word "ROCHE," paired with an encircled one or two (depending on the dosage), on the other. They are sold in pre-sealed bubble packs. Rohypnol can be dissolved in a drink and is undetectable, which makes is a big part of what makes it appealing to criminals looking to drug unsuspecting victims.

What Are the Side Effects?

Adverse effects of Rohypnol use include decreased blood pressure, memory impairment, drowsiness, visual disturbances, dizziness, confusion, gastrointestinal disturbances and urinary retention.
Who Uses Rohypnol and How?
Rohypnol use has been reported on every inhabited continent. It is often used in conjunction with other drugs and is usually ingested orally, though it can be snorted.

It is largely used by adults, although teen use of Rohypnol is increasing. The most common use among teenagers and young adults is as an alcohol extender -- an attempt to create a dramatic "high," most often in combination with beer -- or as a drug to incapacitate a victim before a sexual assault. The drug's low cost (sold for less than $5 per tablet on the black market) makes it more accessible. But the rise in usage in this age group can also be tied to common misconceptions about the drug, erroneous belief that the drug's pre-sealed packaging means that their supply could not have been adulterated, and a misbelief that the drug cannot be detected by a urine test.

Protecting Yourself From the "Date Rape" Drug
Rohypnol is not the only drug used in cases of violence against women. GHB (gamma-hydroxybutrate) has also been associated with sexual assault in cites throughout the country. Common names include, "liquid ecstasy," "somatomax," "scoop," or "grievous bodily harm."

Not to mention that anyone passing by in the hallway near JVDS room would have caught the scent of the decomposing body. :waitasec:

"The conditions of incarceration at best will be overcrowded and uncomfortable, and more likely can be described as deplorable and intolerable," said Philadelphia-based defense attorney Theodore Simon, whose clients have included Ira Einhorn, who was extyradited from France to face murder charges; Alain Robert , the "French Spiderman" known for climbing skyscrapers; fight promoter Don King and Robert Durst, the heir to the New York real estate fortune. It's really not that uncommon if you are traveling relatively inexpensively and moving around in a radius from a particular place - you have a place that is your "base" and travel lightly for a day or two at a time from there.

And, as I posted earlier, it's not at all uncommon that the hotel room wouldn't be checked. It's very different in most other parts of the world, especially lower end hotel. You can be there weeks at a time and not have rooms checked unless you specifically request that and pay for that.

With Joran having established that he was "living" there for a time (14 ish days) and having a routine and rapport with the staff, I'm sure that made it even less likely to have raised a red flag with them.

Being young, traveling abroad, in a cheaper hotel, none of it would be especially unusual - especially since he had paid in advance (at least for those 14 days).

As I said earlier, though, that's also why they typically keep your key and a copy of (or the actual) passport, so if someone leaves or overstays and doesn't pay that they can't be "stiffed" as easily since your stuff is essentially held "hostage" in your room.

There is a story posted somewhere on this board about a woman's body hidden under the bed in the hotel room-and it was a lot longer than 3 days before her body was finally found. It happened here in the US.
So, give me a break. It happens.

Two things I noticed when watching the video of the two entering his hotelroom: She is not carrying a purse.
And when he leaves the hotel I don't see him carrying a coffee like reported.

Sorry if this has been discussed. Catching up =)

"Under the fingernails of my daughter there are traces, evidence, that's why they didn't permit her cremation," he said.
Dr. Tejada confirmed that valuable evidence could be found under the girl's fingernails.

This is the bit I don't understand. How could he know there were skin scapings belonging to JVDS under her nails, if the samples weren't taken before her burial? They can assume that the evidence is there, but how can they know it?

Flores, 48, buried his daughter Thursday but said he expected her to be exhumed so that DNA tests can be performed.

"Under the fingernails of my daughter there are traces, evidence, that's why they didn't permit her cremation," he said.

Dr. Tejada confirmed that valuable evidence could be found under the girl's fingernails.

Also note the doctor says the evidence 'could' be found under the girls fingernails. So it's a possibility- not a definate. I think SF's father's could have interpreted the info incorrectly, considering his grief and lack of sleep.

If JVDS hit SF with a weapon (racket?) from behind causing her death, then there may have been no struggle or fighting for her life- thus no visible scratches on JVDS, and possibly no skin scrapings belonging to JVDS.

Also want to note that SF's bro said that she was unrecognisable....he could also have assumed it was from the beating, but a corpse after 4 days of decomp is not going to look the same as when they were alive.

I have watched this repeatedly, and still can't get over it..... the fact that he seems to completely ignore her, absolutely confident that she will follow. That she seems so 'out of it', somehow. That when he leaves the room, after committing the most heinous, violent act, and seeing what remained, he looks so relaxed...

It is simply chilling.

What does he have in his right hand? He seems to be messing with something
in his hand.... (Pill bottle?)

Just the mention of this kids name makes me mad, but for some reason I am pleased that the Dutch are going to give him representation. I am really having mixed emotions about all of this. I think its because of its location.
Am I wrong or is the military in charge of the police force in Peru?

I guess I better google and find out about that.

Yes Smart blonde, it seems he lured her to the room with a promise of something she wanted.

I've racked my brain. They had only met the evening before, say 10 hours or so before. Not for sex, in her mind IMO. Maybe he had simply slipped her a ruffie and she was getting dozy and like she told her friends she was going to his room to go to sleep.

I heard on Geraldo they found 2 ruffies in her abandoned car. Does anyone know if that would make sense? I always thought they were tiny little pills, now I learn each comes in a wrapper. Ta

BBM- probably a blister pack, rather than pill bottle. Or purchased on the black market and wrapped for selling.

ETA: pic of rohypnol packaging:
http://www.justice.gov/dea/images_depressants.html

Notice how it has the perferation so you can just rip off two or however many you want at a time? That could be considered individually wrapped.

Thinking back to the video - that is a pretty good shot of the room door. I wonder if they have many of camera's or everyone just got lucky that the camera for the hallway was placed right at JVS's room.

I don't know - she doesn't look easy on her feet - maybe not staggering but not stable on her feet either. Her legs are dragging. Did he slip her something and she just wants to lie down somewhere...? Is she out of it that he doesn't have to whoo her - it's a done deal for him?

I've watched the video a few times and there is something about her demeanor that doesn't sit right with me. I'm not sure that she's staggering or dragging her feet but it's almost as if she isn't there volunarily. She clearly wasn't being physically forced but it doesn't seem like she wants to be there. I just can't quite put my finger on it.
