What makes you think that happens alot that you are handed a key and walk into an occupied room? I have never heard that. In this case, however, the intruder would have had to walk past the hotel clerk most likely. Or, even if it were another guest in the hotel--why are they not seen on the videocamera coming or going from Joran's room? Surely if such was the case we would have heard about it. JMHO

I worked front desk during college and keys were given out to occupied rooms. The wrong key was handed out by accident and guest went by the number on the key (old metal key system) or someone had requested a room at reservation and the clerk (me included) would hand out the key before clicking all the way through the check in process and finding out the requested room was occupied. I only did that once, it was horrifying, but it happens.

But I agree, it did not happen here.

ok i took anoher listen. The officers asks him about his credit cards and other belongings, that is when he responds that they are in his hotel in Santiago. He says he had them in his room, and when he left, they were left in his room.

Right, so I wonder if the Chilean authorities were ever able to locate that room and the belongings (the duffel bag and money from Stephany)?. I think it is important to verify this, because after they check for rape and if there was no rape - I'd think they'd need to verify robbery as motive. But then this is Peru, they probably don't need motive.

I hope they found the room in Santiago. I really wish that video had subtitles, or even a newspaper article quoting what Joran says so i could translate it better. The audio s pretty bad.

Weather in Lima, Peru on 5/30/10:

Not sure how these weather conditions relate to the rate of decomposition. I'd also wonder if there was an air conditioner in the room. The colder it is, the slower the decomp.

Thoughts.

Mel

ps: another disturbing article. Not for the weak of heart -- and I don't think I would wish this on anyone.

“Law Of The Donkey” Could be Applied to Joran van der Sloot
Well I think you're right on the money Mel. There are many variables that can affect the rate of decomp.

I thought since it was under 3 days in this case that bug or larva development would nail it down. But I saw Dr Baden on TV tonight and he didn't mention that. He did mention the rigor's would just be over, but then surprised me in saying the most damming thing he thought about what would name the killer is the video of them both going in and only him coming back out. LOL

\As to the L of the D how absolutely awful although I can certainly appreciate the mother's agony and wanting revenge.

I'm wondering if she had been able to forgive him if that might have been the better thing to do in thinking of the possible healing of her daughter in future years. Just IMO xox

Me too-I would think after the interrogation procedures (I'm not sure what they will do), but I'd think he wouldn't just toss the money....but who knows its was reported to be about 1700.00 US dollars converted from Euro. I know he was reported as taking 2 taxis and a night in a hotel in Santiago...there should be money left over.

To add a bit regarding my post above, I have been a nurse for years...its amazing how much info/ details you recall after finding a patient on the floor, or finding a patient deceased, and you have to write up an incident report afterwards...maybe it was similar for the employee after finding the body and then relating the info to authorities and/or reporters?

It's good to have you here Abbie. We love our nurses. Ya Ya

Okay, I think I understand what you are saying. But Joran's key wasn't handed to someone else by mistake here because we see him being given the correct key. IIRC, it is a metal key.

Too many to count -- if you google, you'll find many many cases. For example, a hotel down the road from me is notorious:

At checkin I was given a key to a room that was already occupied. I was then moved to another room that had a shower that did not work. The third room we tried was acceptable. The stafff was friendly and responsive. Nice location next to Magic Mountain and plenty of nearby restaurants. I was afraid to leave anything of value in the room though after being given the key to an occupied room.

And you're right - in this case, the video tells all. I was just making a simple point that keys are often given to already occupied rooms. Sorry to get OT.

Best,

Mel

I am glad he didn't have the thought to stand at that door when he was leaving and act like he was talking to someone. Can you imagine if we were looking at him gesturing, laughing and talking like someone was in the room. That would have definitely been confusing.

i would really like to see the rest of the survailance camera footage from the hotel, when he leaves to get coffee and when he come back. it will be interesting to see how he acts while leaving his room, and as he returns.

Maybe he just drugged her, with the date rape drug and then then things got out of control and he murdered another.......

Somewhere they implied she died around 8 thirty, I think. Suppose it really was a sexual encounter, and she falls asleep. He gets up and decides since she had won money why not let her pay for coffee and helps himself to some of her money. She confronts him when he gets back and whack shes down. He's out the door.

Honestly I think she was dead long before he went out for coffee, we need that tape.

God Forbid the thought, eh? When he exits in that bright patterned shirt around 9:30 his face has a plastic look to it IMO.

We know he isn't looking at the camera as it is looking down on him and he isn't looking up. But he has this weird look on his face which I can't find the right word for. Guilty, yes. Trying to be a mouse as he slips out type feeling, dead-pan almost. I thought it looked like he had a mustache penciled on his lip :waitasec: He just looks very different to me there. In shock with his mind trying to focus on what to do next.

And in the next shot when he walks by the desk so slow, I think he is wanting to appear invisible and just get the heck out of there. It looks like the desk clerk is curled up in the chair behind the desk sleeping. Is that right? Hard to make out. xox

Oh, I thought of a word - Mongoosish, like the big oversized rats in Mongolia. I know, I'm so bad ;}

Apparently according to this site Stephany met Joran in the casino during the poker competition. Elton Garcia was along with Joran, and he also was staying at the same hotel.
Garcia stayed at the casino with Joran and Stephany until they left the casino at 5 am. There was a witness that saw them leave in the truck and saw Stephany driving.

The video shows the couple entering the Tac Hotel at 5:15 am, and then 3 hours later, on Sunday 8:10 am Joran is seen leaving the hotel and going to Wongs to buy bread and two cups of coffee.
Then he went back to the room and out again at 9:30 am to "address Stephany van", and he was carrying a small suitcase and a backpack.
It was indicated that she probably was dead by then.

I also think she was dead before he left for coffee. We definitely need to see how he acts/what he looks like when he leaves the room for coffee. Im wondering, was he nervous? scared? worried? did he looked shocked, angry, anxious as he walked out of his room?? I want to see the tape!

Ok, I am wondering where JVDS stashed the money he suppossedly took from Stephany. Thanks!

HE spent a good bit oif it getting that wonderful dye job, renting other rooms along the way (what? You think he slept outside those 2 nights? Ha! He probably even utilized room service so he wouldn't be seen, bus fare, the cab fare he paid to two guys, food....he blew through whatever money He's stolen from Stephany and only had a little bit left, I wonder how much it was?

(couldn't sleep)

I've seen some of the tapes. He doesn't look nervous or anxious or even suspicious. He maintains a low profile and keeps his arrogance in play. "Don't disturb my girl". What arrogance! His cocky attitude shows through at all times. You can't pick out fear even when you watch them KNOWING what he did, much less detect it when you had no idea.

Re: The Donkey Law...if the shoe fits, wear it. Do like the natives do, Joran, cos you are in THEIR sick playground now. See how you like THEIR reindeer games!!!

i agree Abbie - i think he spent almost all of the money he stole from Stephany, and he used it to try and flee.

Yes. I just watched the video again. When he leaves in the striped shirt, he looks like nothing is wrong, like he has no worrie. Very arrogant. But im very curious to see the footage that has not been release yet - him leaving to get coffee, and when he returns with the 2 cups of coffee. I do hope they release those videos as well.

(cant sleep either!)
