First of all, I do believe that Juan Martinez read the 18 page letter (or is it 20 pages ?) long ago when he began this journey. The Alexander family would have included him among the very select few allowed to read the letter. At the time and for a long time, the Alexander family no doubt had made it plain to those select few of their desire to keep the letter private. We could not imagine until now the pain that letter must have caused them, and the pain of hearing the words from the letter again and now in public.
The events that have been occurring in this retrial probably played a large part in their decision to make this letter public (such as secret witness testimony by Jody that took not one but 2 higher courts to deem that it should not be in secret, the secret affidavits of the ?14 or however many unknown witnesses who refuse to publicly testify, the length of this penalty phase, the consistent and constant victimization of their beloved brother and even other close friends such as Chris & Sky Hughes, Deanna Reid, Detective Flores, to name some, the trial within a trial r/t *advertiser censored* on a computer that amounted to once (which does not even matter) and so much more and all with the knowledge that the first jury could not come to a decision for this last part of the trial.
Probably with very heavy hearts and much discussion with each other and those they trusted (to include Juan Martinez), the Alexander family made the decision to make the private letter public. At what point they made this decision, perhaps they will let us know in time. But we must remember that timing is everything. I prefer out of the defense expert witnesses that have testified in both the first trial and this part of the trial that it was through Dr. Robert Geffner that parts of this long letter has been revealed. Since he became the one that some of the secret affidavit witness testimony was to be relayed to the jury and the Court, the timing seemed perfect. Dr. Geffner has not displayed Court disrespect. Even though he has been diligent in his opinion (unfortunately), Dr. Geffner has not shown thus far the behavior we have seen in Samuels, AVL, and Fonseca.
Lastly, as I see several others are coming forward as I am, this letter finally made me get off the fence of indecision and can finally say that yes, Jody does deserve the death penalty. As I read the date July 28, 2008 (Travis birthday) for her letter to the Alexander family, I wondered was Jody still in the Yreka jail when she wrote the long letter. Remember it was the female officer who encouraged Jody to write a letter to the family. I checked the timeline of dates, July 15, 2008 she was arrested at her home and then booked at the Siskiyou County jail on suspicion of 1st degree murder, and it was September 5, 2008 that Jody was extradited to Arizona.
For those of you who have penned so well your thoughts on this long letter, I do agree. Jody described just what she herself had done to cause the death of such a good, caring, and kind man who had shortcomings as we all do but never deserved death by the hands of Jody. She did indeed want the family to know just what was done and why she thought their brother Travis deserved to die. Now we understand why his grandmother died of a broken heart. Now we understand why the Alexander family desired the harshest punishment possible to be inflicted upon the murderer. It does not matter that Jody may never be put to death, but it does matter that she be in isolation from all others. That eventually Jody will die in prison.
Rest in Peace Travis Victor Alexander. (Just My Very Humble Opinion)
