Russia to go to UN with its claims of US-backed biological weapon plot

Russia is preparing to put before the UN unfounded claims of a US-orchestrated biological weapon plot in Ukraine, as the Kremlin announced 16,000 foreign fighters from the Middle East would be sent to the eastern European country.

The UN security council is meeting on Friday at Russia’s request to discuss Moscow’s claim that the US-backed laboratories in Ukraine were working on biological weapons to target Russians. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, along with western military intelligence, fears Russia is preparing the ground for its own chemical weapon attack.

"Allegedly, we are preparing a chemical attack,” he said in a video address on Thursday. “This makes me really worried, because we’ve been repeatedly convinced: if you want to know Russia’s plans, look at what Russia accuses others of.”

(...)

Meanwhile, a UN spokesperson said there were credible reports of Russians using cluster munitions in populated areas. Cluster munitions, which scatter small bombs over a large area, are banned by more than 100 countries, including the UK, but not Russia, Ukraine or the US.

More than 2.5 million people have fled Ukraine and a further two million are internally displaced within the country, the UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, said on Friday.

The grim toll for Ukrainian civilians comes amid growing fears that Russia could stage a chemical attack, as senior Russian officials recycled old conspiracy theories about alleged western-made biological weapons.

The head of the Russian military’s radiation, chemical and biological protection troops, Igor Kirillov, said on Thursday that US-backed labs in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa were working on dangerous pathogens, custom-designed to target Russians and other Slavs. According to Russian-state media, Kirillov alleged the US planned to exploit Ukraine’s “unique geographical position” by sending migratory birds carrying deadly diseases into Russia.

The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, made a similar claim on Thursday, alleging that US-backed labs in Ukraine were working to “develop ethnically targeted biological weapons”. The director of the CIA, William Burns, told the US Senate intelligence committee that Russia may be laying the groundwork for a chemical or biological attack of its own, which it would then blame on the US or Ukraine in a “false flag operation”.

“This is something, as all of you know very well, is very much a part of Russia’s playbook,” he said. “They’ve used these weapons against their own citizens, they’ve at least encouraged the use in Syria and elsewhere, so it’s something we take very seriously.”

Russian strikes hit western Ukraine as offensive widens | AP News

Friday’s strikes targeted the west, away from the main battlezones, where the Ukrainian air force has used bases to operate. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said Russia used high-precision long-range weapons Friday to put military airfields in Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk “out of action.” He did not provide details.

The Lutsk strikes killed four Ukrainian servicemen and wounded six, Lutsk Mayor Ihor Polishchuk said. In Ivano-Frankivsk, residents were ordered to shelters after an air raid alert, Mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv said.

In another potentially ominous movement, new satellite photos appeared to show the massive Russian convoy outside the Ukrainian capital had fanned out into nearby towns and forests.

Howitzers were towed into positions to open fire, and armored units were seen in towns near the the Antonov Airport north of the city, according to Maxar Technologies, the company that produced the images.

[...]

The purpose of the new moves was unclear. Russia likely intends to eventually encircle the capital. But Nick Reynolds, a land warfare analyst at British defense think-tank Royal United Services Institute, said the move “looks like a defensive measure to allow the convoy to both better protect itself” and may indicate it can’t surround the city quickly.

“Therefore, by dispersing, they can better protect themselves in the areas where they do hold ground,” Reynolds said. The Russians seemed to be stalled near Kyiv and Kharkiv but making progress in other areas, and the Ukrainian military has “taken a battering” while Russia is increasing bombardments and regrouping its forces on the ground.

[...]

The Ukrainian general staff said the attacks in the west and in Dnipro were launched because the Russians were “unable to succeed” on other fronts. It said Russian efforts remained concentrated around Kyiv and Mariupol, and that Russian forces were regrouping in the north and around the eastern cities of Sumy and Kharkiv.

Ukraine accuses Russia of firing at Belarusian village from Ukrainian air space
Ukraine has accused Russian aircraft of firing at a Belarusian settlement near the border from Ukrainian air space in an attempt to drag Belarus into the war in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian air force said that at 2.30pm local time (12.30pm GMT), the state border service received information that Russian aircraft had taken off from an airfield in Belarus, crossed into Ukrainian air space and then fired at Kopani, a village in Belarus, reports Reuters.

“This is a PROVOCATION! The goal is to involve the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus in the war with Ukraine!,” Ukraine’s Air Force Command said in an online statement.

The Ukrainian military said that two other Belarusian settlements were also targeted in the operation.

“We officially declare: the Ukrainian military has not planned and does not plan to take any aggressive action against the Republic of Belarus,” the security service said.

“It is concerning that the Russian military is stepping up operations around Japan while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues,” Defense Minister KISHI Nobuo told a press conference Friday. “We will keep a close watch with a sense of tension,” he added. Kishi also said that Japan has expressed its concern through diplomatic channels.’

‘Russia and China held joint naval exercises in the Sea of Japan from October 14-17 as part of the two countries' maritime cooperation, including warships and support ships of the Russian Pacific Fleet.

Moscow and Beijing have forged closer military and diplomatic ties in recent years at a time when their relations with the West have soured.’

Trendy restaurants in Kyiv switch to cook for army, hospitals, elderly amid war (kyivindependent.com)
Editor’s note: The Kyiv Independent isn’t sharing the names of the restaurants in this story for security reasons.

Before the war, this restaurant in central Kyiv was always packed, no matter the time of the day. It was a popular spot among creative youth and foreigners.

In usual times, it served Beef Bourguignon and Kyiv Mule cocktails, but the war made changes to the menu. Now the restaurant bakes bread for hospitals and cooks chicken soup for defenders of the city.

[...]

The place is hardly recognizable from its days of partying. The decorations are gone, and the windows are covered with black fabric.

[...]

“At first, I wanted to join the territorial defense forces,” Khrobust said. “But I realized that I am useless there. I started thinking what use I could be of and figured – it’s cooking.”

“Instead of a machine gun I grabbed a ladle and a knife,” he went on.

[...]

“Good food keeps the spirit high,” Khrobust said, “The soldiers do everything so we can sleep at night and we do everything for them to be well-fed.”

He came up with a balanced menu, which includes vegetables, porridges, soups and sometimes, fruit.

[...]

“Someone said they can bring a lot of flour if we can make something out of it. I thought of a huge pizza oven we have in our second restaurant and realized we can use it to bake bread,” said Bilyk, a waiter.

Now Bilyk bakes around 80 loaves a day, something he could not have imagined a few weeks ago. He never baked before the war started.

[...]

The restaurant is among a dozen eateries in central Kyiv that joined efforts to help Ukrainian civilians and the military amid the war. Together they produce around 20,000 lunches daily. And that is just one group of restaurants in one neighborhood.

[...]

The restaurants also share groceries with each other.

“We also have volunteers who have cars and who are ready to help (with deliveries),” Herasimchuk said.

[...]

“There is a very interesting thing I just realized,” Herasimchuk said, “Ukrainians are very hardworking people. All people here, it’s necessary for them to be doing something.”

Personally, I think the purpose is to blow up as much of Ukraine that he can before retiring back to the Dombas, Crimea and Belarus. Unfortunately that could also signal chemical/bio warfare is about to begin. I fear I'm getting very cynical, trying harder not to though. AJMO

Putin appears to be truly unhappy with the FSB in Ukraine: he attacked the 5 Service SOiMS (FSB's foreign Intelligence branch). Sergei Beseda, head of the Service, and his deputy Bolukh, head of the DOI, placed under house arrest, according to my sources inside.

I wouldn't doubt this at all but aren't the Armed Forces of Belarus already in Ukraine, have been for a week or so?

At this point, I agree.

There is a huge difference between strategic strikes and just pounding towns down to the pavement.

The Ukrainian president has said his country has reached a strategic turning point in its war with Russia, but added that it was not possible to say how long fighting would continue.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy said:

It is impossible to say how many days we still have to free Ukrainian land. But we can say we will do it ... we are moving towards our goal, towards our victory.

Govt supported fast-tracking Ukraine's EU bid

It is understood that the (Irish) Government supported the fast-tracking of Ukraine’s application to join the European Union during talks at an informal EU summit in France.

However, the application for a swift accession procedure was blocked by several larger states, including France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Eastern states, including Lithuania, supported an expedited process.

(...)

In the early hours of this morning, EU leaders meeting in Versailles, issued a declaration on Ukraine which once again condemned Russian aggression.

However, it stopped far short of agreeing to the Ukrainian request to urgently begin the accession procedure.

Discussions on EU enlargement are always contentious and require unanimity from existing members.

And then there's the crazy, petulant infant in North Korea firing off missiles over Japan and others because he's jealous of the world ignoring that he's still there **stomping tiny foot** and armed too AJMO

Howitzers for God's sake. Maybe they still have a huge unused supply to get rid of from Afghanistan period? I mean, why Howitzers?
There's no real precision with them, they're battery weapons. It's like Putin's saying...war crimes on civilians, you want to talk war crimes? You got it. AJMO

Very concerning that the Russians have begun talking of chemical and biological weapons and accusing others. Sounds like they are laying the foundation for deniability if they decide to use them.
They very well might. They are weapons of last resort and militarily they seem to have stalled. Things aren’t going like they thought they would.

It's all becoming such an overload on the heart...more than ever. I just can't fathom how the government of Ukraine is dealing right now with this new unspeakable threat.
