In Boston manhunt, online detectives flourish http://bit.ly/13ATXq3 #fox25

Wow.

"The bombings have been the highest-profile case in which the public has joined an active investigation, using ever-evolving crowd-sourcing tools, showing the pitfalls and benefits of new technology. It's certainly not vigilantism, but it's not standard policing, either. It's something in the middle, perhaps something new — the law-enforcement equivalent of citizen journalism.

Please don't jump on me but I feel a little bit bad for the 2nd kid. Only because I'm betting most of his motivation came from his older brother. At 19 yrs old , you don't really h ave a great idea of what's going on in the world and I feel like his brother talked him into this and the boy just went along with it, trying to impress his big bro that he looks up to and now he's the one literally left holding the bag. That does in no way minimize his guilt. I just wonder if his mind right now he's thinking why why why did I let him talk me into this.

I totally agree. I tried to express this in a post i just made upthread. I feel sorry for the kid he was and the waste of the bright future he had, not for the kid he became in the last few months. I also think the older brother was the one who turned him into what he became. No older brother, no bombing. Again in no way am i excusing what he did but i do think the mitigation specialist will have something to work with after he is convicted (don't think it will be enough to save his life but it will be far more than in most cases)

I posted them earlier from Huffington Post with an article about how the guy discovered them on his camera.

Oh sorry.
I missed that.

Unreal how clear they are.

Yes, amateur sleuths did have some false leads. But when one is looking for a terrorist, what is more important? People were only trying to help to prevent more tragedies.

About the NY Post article. These pics were actually circulated to LE, and were among what I'm pretty sure were thousands of pics and videos considered by LE. LE should have never let them leak and the NY Post and other outlets should never have shown them. I guess if there is anything good about the instant gratification culture of twitter, facebook, reddit, etc. it's that as quickly as people are accused, they can also be vindicated in short order and people move on to the next topic trending. Before there was social media, there was yellow journalism and before that, plain old gossip. There's plenty of blame to go around for all the rumors and false information that were rampant whether it's online frenzy, shoddy journalists or LE leaking information. We can only hope people will resist jumping the gun in the future, but apparently, these lessons aren't easily learned. All MOO

Well said. I would like to add, we should never, ever give up!

isn't this the Chinese student and the little boy here?

Federal public defenders office wants to represent Tsarnaev.

*just saw on Fox

Everyone interviewed about the younger brother has such nice things to say about him.

Few seem to speak of the older brother.

Well, if you consider alleged pot smoking, drinking and bad driving nice, then I guess so.

Wow. Just Wow. Maybe this is the cool new thing and the rest of us just missed it?

I was feeling sympathetic towards the younger puppet but if that friend really had that license plate I can only think Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius.

I don't know... doesn't that word look a little photoshopped? And in the same font as the Umass dartmouth name?

Doesn't look photoshopped at all to me. There have been a number of legit photos accused of being photoshopped for some reason.

I don't think so - there was a clear pic of #2 behind the mom, sister and little boy leaving (or just having left) his backpack, and that doesn't quite look like the same crowd. I think the photog said these pics were taken between 10-20 minutes before the explosions & both brothers still have their bags.

Uck they were probably shopping for a good spot to place the bombs.

I think that even if Number 1 had some contact with checynan rebels (it all depends on which side you are on in the conflict there, I have for years supported the rebels in their fight with russia) he was self radicalized to start with. The chechnyans dont have a beef with the states and unless it was pure religious oriented i don't see the motive. At least i believe strongly it wasn't politically motivated. My starting point is that #1 first became self radicalized then made contact with some checnyan groups but not for any political reason, if anything he may have used them to further his own religious extremism.

Johar was said to adore his brother from some things i have read. Given the age difference and the fact they were not with parents really, his brother probably became a father figure to him. From everything i have read i think if his brother had stayed in dagestan when he went back last year, Johar would have had a bright and normal future. He was brainwashed.

That does not in any way excuse what he did. I just think its a reason that makes sense to me and explains what happened given all we have heard about johar and his personality. And why I think it was such a waste, not feeling empathy for him but for who he was b4 his brother got his hands on him. Many on the threads have shown a little ..not compassion for him but more a puzzlement and its because the world was his oyster a year or two ago. How many 19 year olds volunteer to be buddies with special needs children or take the time to mentor team mates and help them. Ok the latter yes but he went out of his way to help others with the volunteering. Then he turned to absolute evil.

I just with his brother had died long ago. imo this would never have happened.

I am around his age, and I know plenty of people who are involved in volunteering. There are so many student organizations here (at my college) that deal with volunteering, fighting for a cause, etc. We have something called Dance Marathon where hundreds of students dance for 24 hours straight to raise money for childhood cancer. I feel like there is a big emphasis on volunteering for this generation. So I think it is a very disturbing and strange contrast between his volunteering and the terrorist act he committed but I am just saying that being a college student who volunteers isn't really unusual at all.

Any news of the friends that were taken in for questioning?

Agree. Also, supposedly the boat was the man's 'baby'. I'm thinking someone with $$$ is going to step in and get him a new shiny one, based upon his actions of discovering this suspect. JMO

He couold be eligible for the reward. In which case he might be able to buy a new shiny boat.
