The point isn't that the gunshot didnt cause immediate fatal damage. The point is that Travis wouldn't have had the capacity to get up and chase after Jodi, hit her, threaten her in any way. No way. You don't have to have Einstein level IQ to figure that out, and I'm sure it's not lost on the jury.
