Being a booming area, drug activity was likely rampant in the area in 1974, including meth and acid. Skitzy users. I can think of lots of possibilities along these lines if they saw something.
This is my opinion only, don't want to debate those who remember it as cloistered in SW FW. Maybe it was untouched by such vice but I'd wager not.

I don't know...I have a hard time seeing that leading to murder. I'd more easily buy into a scenario where somebody lost his temper and killed someone and then killed the other two to cover it up. If Julie was crying that she wanted to go home and making a fuss, I can see a short-tempered dealer backhanding her hard enough to kill her and then panicking and killing the other girls.

Just tattling about a stop at a dealer's house wouldn't mean much. Low-level pushers aren't completely anonymous; if they were, their customers wouldn't be able to find them.
Maybe LE conscripted one of them to inform after a pot offense.
But honestly this is not my top theory.
I'm not buying the "dealer" theory.
Being a teen of the 70s, I am 100%, absolutely positive that pot was easier to get than a beer. Everyone had it. Everyone shared it. You could buy it 24/7 from any number of people. And none of them were the notorious, dangerous, stereotypical made from TV drug dealer. It just wasn't that way.

Many situations come to mind that could have happened. Your thoughts bring another theory Plus! Bringing other things already mentioned to mind.
Suppose the girls had no money to shop! They stop at a booth make a call and are on the way to get money for lunch. Maybe someone is going with them !
They all pile out of the car and the precocious nine-year-old adventurous and exploring, Saw or heard something she/they shouldn't have.
Loud words are exchanged and something has to go down to keep the real business (whatever that might be) going.
Just a thought among half a million more.

Say like maybe one of them needed money for a special gift of some kind? Something happens in that endeavor, maybe a difference of opinion or something, outside of mall visit? One accidentally killed and others were witnessed...

A true accident wouldn't have led to murder, but a violent outburst that led to a death could have.

It could be that the girls were partying with a couple of guys and the guys decided to rape the girls. In his radio interview, Rusty mentioned that the Carter brothers might have been the type to do something like this, and there were four of them, all of whom had trouble with the law.

I will challenge it. Record store guy that called CA at 1 am, the security guard that came out how many years later? The van witness that came out in 81 or the "elderly lady" the police never could find but RA found 30-40 years later? Great witnesses those. And yes, that's all the witnesses.

I also remember reading that Renee had money saved in her room. Either $35 or $36.
I remember reading, early on in the threads, that the witness that placed the girls in the mall that day, did so by noticing, then remembering the "Sweet Honesty" shirt that Renee had reportedly been wearing.
The problem with this sighting is that "Sweet Honesty" was quite popular in those days. The witness only remembered that shirt, not the girls' faces or anything else. Lots of girls wore that same type of shirt from what I understand. It could have been Renee, yes, or it could have been some other girl who was wearing a "Sweet Honesty" shirt that day. Moo
