Wilson's family is back inside the courtroom at this time. They were clearly notified that autopsy pictures would be shown this morning and opted to skip it and arrive later. Next witness: Alejandra Gil, Forensic DNA scientist, Texas Department of Public Safety.
We are looking at a Texas DPS Biology Lab Report. There are eight submissions that were examined. Submissions include: Swabs from handlebars of bicycle; swabs from seat of bicycle; swabs from firearm grip, trigger, trigger guard, safety, magazine release and slide; swabs from magazine base and loading port; known saliva standard from Kaitlin Armstrong; known blood standard from Mo Wilson; swabs from underside of bicycle seat; swabs from exterior of gum wrapper.
Now a different lab form. Two submissions include: Known saliva standard from Colin Strickland; known saliva standard from Caitlin Cash.
Now a different lab form. Submissions include: Swabs of stain on floor; swabs of stain on cinderblock.
Now a different lab form. Submissions include: Swabs of stain on left thigh of Mo Wilson.
Gil was responsible for collecting and packaging the DNA. She did not perform analysis. No further questions from the state.
Defense's witness. Gil testifies that the evidence came from APD. She says she cannot vouch for how APD collected or handled it before she received it. She can't speak to possible contamination.Gil explains "shedding DNA." It is when you touch an item and leave behind DNA. Some people tend to leave behind more DNA than others, depending on the rate your skin sheds.
Gil says DNA does not explain when it was deposited or how it was deposited, just that it exists. In this case, Gil tested for the presence of blood. The only blood samples that came back positive was from the floor and on Mo Wilson's leg. It is unclear to Gil whose blood that is.
Gil says the only standards she was given to test the DNA was to Mo Wilson, Kaitlin Armstrong, Colin Strickland and Caitlin Cash. The subjects were decided by APD. Gil has the opportunity to test the DNA to anyone APD provides, but these were the only subjects APD delivered.
Gil said she only did sample preparation, but did not interpret the data. That was a woman by the name of Samantha Perkins. Perkins is here today. No further questions. Witness dismissed.
Next witness, you guessed it, Samantha Perkins.
