Early this week, Khawam contacted the office of Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy to push for more transparency in the case, she told Army Times.
“We’ve called the secretary of the Army’s office and I’ve contacted the Senate and House Armed Services committees for a congressional investigation,” said Khawam, who added that she’s heading to Washington, D.C., this week to meet with lawmakers’ staffers. “The secretary of the Army did contact the general for the base, because [the general] told us that he got a call from them to look into this matter and make sure we were being provided information that we’re requesting.”
On Tuesday, Fort Hood deputy commander Maj. Gen. Scott Efflandt and 3rd Cavalry Regiment commander Col. Ralph Overland updated the Guillen family on the most recent searches and the status of the investigation.
The two commanders also showed the family Guillen’s work area and the parking lot where she was last seen outside 3rd Cavalry Regiment’s engineer squadron headquarters. She was working in the armory there before disappearing on April 22.
A search for missing Army Pfc. Vanessa Guillen along the Leon River was suspended on Thursday, Texas EquuSearch Director of Operations David White said.
“We were given a certain area by law enforcement and we have searched it about as thoroughly as we can,” White told the Telegram. “We suspended our search this morning.”
White said Texas EquuSearch will now be on standby. The search along the Leon River began on Sunday when about 30 volunteers, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife stationed themselves off FM 436 near Wilson Valley Road in Bell County.
“We’re on standby but we will be back … when further developments give us somewhere to go look,” White said. “Right now, we’re as far as we can go. The investigation is ongoing and they will be calling us if something develops.”

BELL COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - Days after searching a local river, Texas EquuSearch continued their efforts Wednesday in the search for missing Fort Hood Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, 20, and they may have been productive.
“I think we found some things and they’re doing some testing on some things. If it has anything to do with it or not, I don’t know. We were all pretty optimistic on it. We won’t know for sure until results come back from the lab,” EquuSearch founder Tim Miller said.
“Yes, there is a reason we have been every place we have been,” he added.
In the Facebook live with the news, Gloria states that she was told by this source that Vanessa was snatched by her hair and forced into a white truck as she tried to fight back....

" Who was the first to report Guillen missing on April 22?
Her unit reported her missing to CID on 23 April when a check of the barracks and unit area did not locate her.
Any more details about her phone pinging in Belton? Do you have her phone?
We do not currently have her phone. We know that her phone did not ping in Belton, we know it was an erroneous phone that pinged. "
'Unidentified' remains' found near area where soldier's remains discovered, sources say
At 1:33 pm, officers where called to the 3400 block of Florence Road for an area check after people say they spotted remains while in the area.
KWTX-10 said the discovery was found within walking distance of the site where investigators found solider Gregory Wedel-Morales' remains on June 19.
This information comes as search crews continue to look for missing Fort Hood solider Vanessa Guillen.
Guillen's regiment has assigned an investigating officer to determine if any sexual misconduct took place in the unit. CID is working with that officer.
The family of Army Private First Class Vanessa Guillen are calling for an independent investigation into her disappearance, and have called for Fort Hood, the base she was stationed at, to be closed if she is found dead.
The 20-year-old was last seen on April 22, wearing a black t-shirt and purple workout pants. Her car keys, wallet and ID were found in the armory room on base where she was working that morning, but her phone is still missing.
Investigators have said they suspect foul play, but her family says they are not doing enough, and now want the FBI or another federal agency to take over the case.
"They're not here to help us find Vanessa," family attorney Natalie Khawam told CBS News' Mireya Villarreal. "They're here to hoard that information because they don't want us knowing what's happened."
A body has been found in a shallow grave by the Leon River in Texas, in connection with the disappearance of missing Fort Hood soldier, Vanessa Guillen, a source has told CrimeOnline.
"The search for Vanessa is now over," said Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller. I just spoke with him. He said the remains were found very close to where they discovered evidence last week in the Leon River. He described the discovery as a "shallow grave." The medical examiner will need to determine the identity of the remains found. We'll have a live report on ABC13 Houston this afternoon.
