Could the "contradictions" have to do with what was said on the record vs. off the record? Meaning maybe LE can only act on what is said to them as part of an interview/official questioning, while QX was free to repeat anything Rudy said to him? (Does this question even make sense?!)
This is how I also understood it. It seems like Rudy retracted his statement/not wanting to press charges and LE are obligated to acknowledge that. QX doesn’t have the same stipulations. Some of the drama being filmed by the local news reporter apparently captured an exchange with the mother deliberately telling Rudy to “tell them you were lying,” which I believe was then occurring in the conference room while QX was speaking to camera.

I did not get the feeling that they aren' t taking it seriously. They stated multiple times that it's an open investigation and that they would continue to investigate. They took information to the prosecutor and he or she denied filing charges at this time. They may be waiting to gather the information needed to get more serious charges--we don't know.
Yes, you are right. It's a brand new investigation. I'm just really really hoping they are able to put all the pieces together, even if we (the public) don't get all the answers.

"Santana and Rudy had contact with police since he was reported missing, but Finner said they provided fake names and date of births, which allowed the young man to go unnoticed for years, even as neighbors and family often spotted him."

So no fact checking done in that police department when they take a missing person's case?

She was married to a HPD police officer so I don't think they questioned her at all. If his friends were the ones investigating they took her word for it.

I think I'm going to step back from this one and wait a few years till the Netflix show comes out!
You may not have to wait very long! Apparently, Dateline was on it from the start.

"Brenda Paradise, a private investigator who worked for the Farias family, told Dateline in 2015 that the missing teen had had “so much thrown at him” in the months before he went missing, including losing his older brother in a motorcycle accident, according to NBC News."

It’ll be interesting to see what QX says tonight but Im ready to eat my words about him. Not sure I still approve of how he handled things yesterday but he may very well be needed on this case. Disappointing that despite the various leads LE received, including calls from family seeing him in 2018, they didn’t properly get his identity in other encounters. Makes me also wonder what the nature of the other encounters were. I’m just out of words at this point and I’m worried their dynamic will go back to status quo.

Rudy Farias timeline

March 7, 2015: Rudolph 'Rudy' Farias was 17 when his mother first reported him missing. He had last been seen along Valley Lake Drive, which is north of Tidwell in northeast Houston. He was reportedly walking his two dogs when he disappeared. The dogs were later found, but Farias was not.
His mother said Farias suffered from anxiety, depression and asthma and didn't have his inhaler when he left.
HPD later said they went to the home multiple times while investigating his disappearance and spoke with family, friends and neighbors.
Volunteers with Texas Equusearch also searched for Farias.

March 8, 2015: We now know that Farias returned to his home the day after he disappeared, Houston police said in a news conference eight years later.

May 2017: Farias was one of the cases included in the KHOU 11 special series "Bring Them Home" about missing children.
We interviewed his mother who continued to claim that her son vanished and was still missing more than two years later.
Janie Santana said then that detectives warned family members that her son may have been abducted and sold into human trafficking.
"He has such a huge heart. He loves with all his heart,” Santana told us. "So that's why we know he wouldn't just get up and go on his own. That's not him."
"It's just a nightmare that you want to wake up from,” Santana said.

September 2018: Houston police said they got a call from family members, telling them that Farias was living behind a family member's home. Police searched, but didn't find him.

Dates unknown: HPD said patrol officers had interactions with Farias through the years but they didn't realize he was the missing teen because he gave them fake names. They didn't give specifics about what those encounters were and when they occurred.

June 29, 2023: At about 10 p.m., police said a man, who would later be identified as Farias, was found outside Immaculate Heart Church near 76th Street and Avenue K in southeast Houston. According to Farias' family, a good Samaritan found him unresponsive and called 911.

July 3, 2023: The family released the following statement.
"We want to thank the media and public for all their support. My son Rudy Farias IV was found on Thursday, June 29th, after being missing for eight years. Currently, we do not have any additional information on Rudy’s case. What we do know is at the time of his recovery, a good Samaritan located him unresponsive and immediately called police and 911. My son Rudy is receiving the care he needs to overcome his trauma, but at this time, he is nonverbal and not able to communicate with us. We are asking for privacy during this difficult time but will share more details as Rudy continues to heal."
Santana said her son was in the hospital and released a photo of him in a hospital bed. Her sisters later said the photo was actually from 2012.

July 5, 2023: HPD met with Farias and Santana at a hotel.
Houston community activist Quanell X told the media that he spoke with Farias alone. He said the now 25-year-old man told him his mother forced him to go along with the charade and told him he'd go to prison if he didn't. Quanell X also said Farias told him and the investigator that his mom had been drugging and sexually abusing him.

I don't know what the facts are, but I do know a grown man was so upset by what he saw/heard that he was crying on t.v. I am truly baffled as to why LE isn't holding RF in protective custody (or similar), until this can get sorted out. If anything happens, they will have to answer for it. I'm not understanding their approach....or lack thereof.

Amateur opinion and speculation

what grown man?

Strange case. Texas has some confusing laws surrounding juveniles. I narrowed it down to only runaways, and this is what I found. Thought I'd share.

"In Texas, parents are legally responsible for their children up until age 18. However, only youth age 16 and under can be charged with status offenses, meaning a 17-year-old would not be considered a “runaway” and would instead be reported as “a missing person.” In most cases, local law enforcement will determine if a 17-year-old can be forced to return home.

Also, youth under the age of 16 can legally leave home if they become an emancipated minor, meaning their parents no longer have the legal responsibility to take care of them. "

Rudy's cousin says she was told that Rudy's brother, who passed away due to a motorcycle accident, had a life insurance policy that named Rudy as the beneficiary. She was told this years ago and said, "it came out again today."

  • Michelle Rodriguez described Santana as someone who “tries to make people fear her.”
  • “Janie has always been one to be after money in any way she can get her hands on it,” Rodriguez said.
  • “My understanding is she is hiding here in Houston somewhere,” Rodriguez said.
  • “They’re just not doing their job. They don’t want to believe anything,” she said. “I mean, I don’t believe that she was giving fake names and just getting away with it.”

After eight long years, Pauline Sanchez-Rodriguez, Rudy Farias’ aunt finally got to see him Thursday night.

“We hugged until I finally let go,” she said. “Very beautiful to see that he’s okay.”

[...]

Rudy is now staying with family friends. His aunt said he needs time to focus on getting well.

“He doesn’t want to go back to his mom,” Sanchez-Rodriguez said.

[...]

Sanchez-Rodriguez said Rudy is scared and going through a crazy time right now and that he’s not ready to share anything else, but investigators have reached out to Adult Protective Services as they continue investigating the false disappearance.
