"The latest update from police is that they have successfully traced the man, who was pictured carrying a rucksack.

A spokesperson for Hyndburn Police said: "We appealed earlier this week for help to trace a man carrying a rucksack in the Burnley Road area at around the time Lindsay Birbeck was last seen.

"This man has now been identified. Many thanks to everyone who shared our appeal or who contacted us with information."

Police identify potential witness in missing Lindsay Birbeck search

"One entrance and a large section of the graveyard in Burnley Road were sealed off with tape.

Dozens of officers were seen in the cemetery grounds as they investigated a possible discovery.

The arrival of the large police presence and forensic team at the cemetery follows an extensive search for Accrington mum-of-two Lindsay Birbeck who went missing from her home on nearby Burnley Road around 4pm on August 12."

Accrington Cemetery police alert

"Lancashire Constabulary has released a statement regarding the police presence at Accrington Cemetery on Burnley Road.

Police have confirmed that there is a concern they may have found the body of a person at the scene, after they were called at around 8pm last night (August 24).

However, they also stress that it is too early to say what the object is or how long it may have been there.

The family of missing teaching assistant Lindsay Birbeck, from Huncoat, have been visited and informed.

Police have reminded people not to speculate on social media and we would urge the public to heed that warning."

Police release statement regarding discovery at Accrington Cemetery

Police were called at shortly before 8pm yesterday evening (Saturday, August 24th) to a report by a member of the public of an unidentified object in an area of Accrington Cemetery, Burnley Road.

Officers attended the scene and there is a concern this could be the body of a person. An examination of the scene is on-going but at this stage it is too early to say exactly what the object is or how long it may have been there.

An object? Are we assuming an animal has disturbed the resting place of a deceased person?

I'm migraining but aren't there news stories out there saying a body has been found?

But police are saying an object has been found? That makes it sound more like someone found something that looked like a bone and called police to see if it is a bone and if it's human? If that's the case it might have nothing to do with LB's disappearance?

I don't remember a body ever being referred to as an object. If someone died there a few weeks ago, wouldn't outward signs like clothing immediately point out to a person?

Has the cemetery been searched before?

Has the cemetary been searched before?

As the reports said that the cemetery was very close to the last sighting, I would have thought both officers and sniffer dogs would have been all over it.

'Object' sounds more like an item of clothing, or possible partial skeletal remains that need specialists to tell whether they're human and how long they've been there. But as the police statement says possible discovery of a body, that sounds more likely to be the latter than the former.

They haven’t confirmed a body they’ve just referred to ‘an object’ which is making me think possible body part

Updates: Police close Accrington Cemetery

For anyone who's wondering, family are almost always informed if there's a possible body find near the location where their loved one went missing.

Leah's family were informed when police were called to a bad smell some miles away. That would be more about keeping family in the loop and maybe preparing the family for upcoming news headlines, it doesn't always mean that this is their loved one that's been found....

Officers contacted the family of Lindsay Birbeck, who disappeared two weeks ago, following the discovery at Accrington Cemetery.

Last night police confirmed the find in the Burnley Road graveyard not far from where the 47-year-old teaching assistant lived.

Officers were called to the cemetery just before 8pm on Saturday night after a member of the public made the discovery at the far end of the burial ground near the East Lancashire railway line.

It is understood to have been concealed.

By this morning large sections of the cemetery had been sealed off by dozens of officers and a white forensic tent had been set up for further investigations

Around 3.30pm several officers were seen carrying a bag away from the scene.
