I'm an exmo, born and raised in the Mormon church (35 years before I left, another 7 before the guilt finally subsided). NO tattoos allowed. Your body is a temple and therefore should not be defiled. The pressure on Mormons is great, perfection is hinted as being a possible state, and guilt is terrific, especially for those who want to leave. It's not just a religion, it's a lifestyle. Perhaps he just felt like there was no way out...

But do we know FOR SURE he was Mormon or is that only the understandable assumption based on him living in St George UT?

I was replying to an earlier question about Mormons and tattoos...I suppose I should have said IF he was a Mormon, then the pressure is great...etc.

Even not being Mormon in Utah means a lot of stress.
The church actually owns a couple of the news stations.
Their employees paychecks and their insurance come from the LDS church itself.
It's just a completely different mindset that people don't understand if they haven't lived there.

I truly have NEVER seen anything like this case. It is simply bizarre.
Every part of it is bizarre. It's something we just don't see.
The only thing I can even come close to relating to it is Sherri Papini.
Even then that isn't a good comparison.

I hope backing off works and Paul returns.
It appears that the goal is now "Bring Paul Home" instead of "Find Paul."
Maybe that's a good sign that he's been "found" and just hasn't returned home yet.
Or maybe I'm just too optimistic. :dunno:

I can confirm what you say. Hugs to you from another apostate.

Looks like the family is no longer putting together searches.

From an cursory perspective, given that there seems to be a multitude of fringy type people trying to 'help', I can totally understand why they would do this so early. They would be better off to have a smaller, tightknit group of people conducting searches. No distractions and no snoops with alternative agendas. Supposedly some took it upon themselves to harass some daycare center because a psychic claimed he was there.

Thanks! I found someone on a FB group related to this case that referred to themselves as a 'filthy apostate', which I am so stealing to describe myself. lol

No one knows how they will act in a situation like this until it happens to their loved ones or family. Not to mention families are all different. My family went through a very tragic time and I am sure people could have looked at us and said why isn't the family doing more, why aren't the parents on tv more, I saw someone in the family and they were smiling of all things and on and on. I don't think we should judge how families act especially when this all just happened. Everyone is probably doing what they personally have to do just to get through each day.

We see in a lot of cases where when tragedy strikes, someone who was previously on the peripheral of the family/friend circle will step up and claim to be closer to the family than they are in actuality. They will run 's, speak to the media about how "close" they were with the victim, etc.

I wonder if that is happening at all in this case.

I am a local. The area his car was found in is mostly strip malls and businesses. However there are doctors offices that are not far from there, as well as St. Marks Hospital that is just a few miles away. The exact location of his appointment has not been mentioned yet that I can find. One of the articles in the local media stated he was having chest pains and was going to the doctor for that last Thursday. The detective that made a statement on the news said he never made it to his appointment, <modsnip> Whether he made it to his appointment or not has yet to be released to the public. If his appointment was in the area his car was found in, it was at least a 40-45 minute drive from his home. There are plenty of great medical facilities closer to his home but I know I would go a lot farther to see a doctor I was already established with or a specialist. His wife told the police that he was not making sense and was acting strangely in the days before he disappeared. When his vehicle was found there were items in the vehicle that didn't belong to him. There has been speculation in a facebook group that I am a member of that states she made reference in her personal blog in June sometime that they were having marital problems. Whether that is that case or not Paul is still missing. There are a lot of unanswered questions in this case right now. His family has decided to call off large community searches as of yesterday but are still following up on all leads.

I am from Slc and have been following this case from the beginning. It is so strange as the days go on and the story from the family keeps changing. Many people, including myself donated several hours out searching for him. The the limited amount of information being provided by the family, and law enforcement is really fueling a lot of speculation. I feel like in most cases the police are the ones who call off the searches... not the family. Does anyone else find that strange? <modsnip>. Everyone's demeanor was uncomfortably upbeat. The Go Fund Me account that they set up got several complaints that it was fraudulent. I'm not sure if it was temporarily frozen or people were very upset, but last time I checked there hadn't been a donation in over 24 hours. <modsnip>. So many suspicious circumstances surrounding this case! Regardless of what did or didn't happen, I like many others, still pray he is safe... wherever he may be.

Absolutely.

I may be misunderstanding, but having now watched the video at this link (I only read the article when it was listed yesterday), but AIUI, LE seems to say that Paul *has actually* made contact with someone (or maybe more than one person) since his disappearance.

However there may still be concerns for his mental state.

Yes the witness was considered credible. However I don't believe they got a picture or anything...

------------------------

"Our concern is that he's not in the right state of mind," said Sgt. Josh Christensen with AFPD. Christensen said investigators continue to operate on the belief Swenson may have had some sort of mental breakdown. Christensen said a man they are confident in, says Swenson has been spotted in Salt Lake County and has made contact with people- talking about things that aren't real, "describing things that are tangible that everybody else can see are not true."

Perhaps the family has called off the large searches and has a PI working on finding him. If he's delusional and paranoid, having everyone searching for him will scare him away, so maybe they're scaling back to help take some of the pressure off.
