Hi - I just wanted to recount an experience I had while off a RCCL ship in Jamaica several years ago. My mother and I were on the cruise and she loves to gamble, therefore we became very friendly with the casino dealers. In Cozumel, a large group from the ship, passengers and crew all went to Carlos n Charlies and partied all night - a great time, lots of fun. The next day, in Jamaica, Mom and I went on a bus tour where they drop you off for an hour of shopping before you return to the ship. She stayed on the bus while I got off to go shopping. A man approached me and said, "Hey, I recognize you from the ship. What are your plans while you're in port?" I did not recognize this man, but, he said he worked in the kitchen and had seen me. He was black and I am white and I didn't want him to think I was racist because I hung around with the white casino dealers, but, wouldn't give him the time of day, so, I told him I was shopping for tshirts. He said his cousin ran a tshirt shop and he would take me there so I could get a good discount. I felt a little funny about it but I figured the stores are all public, swarming with tourists, etc. Well, he led me on a very convoluted path to a grubby little store. I knew I did not know how to get back from the store and I felt like they were going to rob me, very uncomfortable. I had a 20 in my pocket and more cash and a credit card in a fannypack. There was no way I was giving them my cc number and I didnt want them to see my other cash, so, I searched for something that cost less than the 20. I just felt like I was going to get hit in the head at any second. Finally, bought a towel and got the hell out of there. Once we got outside, he said, "Give me a 20 and I'll take you back to the bus." I told him all I had was the change from the towel, but, I would give that to him, it was 3 or 4 dollars. We argued about it as we walked back, he kept saying you have more than that, youre on vacation! We kept walking and fighting until we got to a point that I recognized and I just took off running, never looked back. I got on the bus and before I could say anything, my Mom said, "The strangest thing happened to me. I got off the bus to get a Coke and a man came up to me and said, Hey, I recognize you from the ship!" Mom, being smarter than me said which ship? and he named the wrong ship, so she told him he was mistaken and just got her Coke. To this day, I do not get off the ship when it is in Jamaica. That night at dinner, my busboy said, "I saw you today in the port, you were walking with a friend". So, I guess my point is crazy things do happen, women, especially, trust your intuition and it is better for people to think you are racist than you risk your property and your life to prove to them that you are not.
