18 y/o Black male shot dead by Police in St Louis suburb of Berkeley MO

Chief Belmar explained in the morning presser that the officer didn't get a bodycam at rollcall. He received it later, but didn't get a chance to put it on.

Don't worry. He'll be vilified for that.

There are other gas station cam videos being released. CNN showed one, and has another they are planning to show. The one they showed is from a camera that just misses showing what happened but shows the person who was looking on and then turned and ran toward the front door to the store.

they arent required to be wearing body cams yet or fully trained with them, its unfortunate he didnt put his on but we have the surveillance video which makes things clear luckily.
the squad car cam goes on when the lights are on i believe, so nothing strange there, it would have been nice if it was on but we have the surveillance video which makes things clear luckily.
the video isnt hi-res but most people looking at it have had no problem clearly discerning the person take a gun from their waist and raise it at the officer.
it isnt the only view of it, there are now 3 and none of them show anything to refute the account we have heard.
they cut it off out of respect for the family to not see their son die all over the news, im sure the entire video will be seen by any family member or community leader the family appoints if they choose.

i dont see any controversy here. i see a young man that is clearly intoxicated or on something making really bad decisions that cost him his life.
and a police officer that was doing his job.

So killer cop in this instance was given a bodycam that day but did not turn it on.
His squad car was also equipped with a dash cam yet wasn't turned on.
Grainy video released from the gas station doesn't show us the shooting. There were plenty of cameras all over that gas station. This is all they had? And they cut it off before we see what happens?
And they wonder why nobody trusts them?

I'm thinking they had better footage from around the gas station because there were cameras all over that building, but they haven't released closer footage to the media for reasons of gruesomeness .. last thing family needs is closer up footage of the incident so soon .. that's just my opinion, but I am assuming why we saw footage which was from far enough away that you couldn't see anything too graphic.

The Voice of Reason can be so refreshing.

Thank you.

This is from the original footage released but it shows the shooting and the Officer running for cover.

they have said that only those 3 cameras captured the incident.

The Mayor talked a little bit about the bodycam. The department received three, and the officer was issued one of the three that very day. I don't know that he had an opportuniity to actually learn how to use it.

Also, as Liljim noted above, I noticed in the first video how oddly the guy who eventually pulled the gun seemed to be walking and sort of 'hanging back', like he was somewhat intoxicated or something. That's just the sense I got, and its just my opinion, and I don't think its an excuse for anything, but I am wondering if that played into his behavior in any way. In any case, from what I have seen so far, this does not (for me) equate in any way with the Michael Brown or Eric Garner deaths.

Seems pretty cut/dry to me. From footage, completely justified. He pointed a gun at the officer. I am shocked that some people are still calling this unjustified. Are you kidding?!? You don't point a gun at an officer, and expect to survive. I feel for the family, but he made a poor poor dumb decision that would get ANYBODY killed. It could be a 75 Year old White Male, and I can guarantee he would have been shot too. IMO

Yeah it appears that was a 30 or 32 cam system which is a LOT of cameras for a c-store (unless it also has a car wash).

Also this started because the guy was shoplifting, we haven't seen the footage from inside the store either.

Are we going to vilify the cop for not sporting a non-mandatory, newly-issued body cam...
Without condemning the young man sporting an illegal gun??

Doesn't make sense!

There is a real movement now to find ANY reason to condemn. No questions as to why a young man this age has such an appalling record...no questions as to why he is carrying an illegal gun. All that is NOT to be addressed. But....let's expect the police Officier to have checked every box.

This is what makes people shrug and walk away...when there is a real discussion to be had. The "killer cop" has a right to life just as much as the wannabe Killer 🤬🤬🤬🤬. But somehow the 🤬🤬🤬🤬 morphs into Leave it to Beaver.

Not helping. Not moving is forward.

It's become clear to me that to a few people there just aren't any justified police shootings. This is about as noncontroversial as you can get. I guess it would be better if we were mourning another dead policeman? I'm sure that isn't what is meant, but there were only going to be two endings in that scenario: dead 🤬🤬🤬🤬 or dead policeman. Not a dilemma in my opinion.

If only we could make it mandatory for convicted criminals to sport body cams!!! :great:

Wouldn't that make for great tv?

....one can dream...

I'm sure he was starting college next week.

From the St Louis Post-Dispatch:

"Parents of Antonio Martin say his fatal shooting 'doesn't make any sense"

http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/parents-of-antonio-martin-say-his-fatal-shooting-doesn-t/article_fdcc9659-905c-5472-b5dd-66f5d36c6fba.html

"This doesn't make any sense for them to kill my son like this," Toni Martin-Green said early Wednesday in an interview at her home near the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. "I am trying to be calm."

She said initial surveillance video provided by police didn't offer enough information to answer her questions

His grandmother, Margret Chandler, was also in disbelief.

"When he was around me, he knew to do right," she said. "Why would he pull out a gun against the police? That's the thing I don't get. It just doesn't add up."

Police say Martin had a criminal record.

St. Louis city police arrested him at least twice in 2013, for third-degree assault and larceny.

Berkeley police arrested him in May for armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and and armed robbery. St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch's office had not yet charged him following that arrest.

I can only refer to the old adage that "love covers a multitude of sins". Meaning, sometimes we, as loved ones, don't see what's right in front of our face, choosing, instead, to believe only the best of our loved ones, regardless of what the evidence shows.
