I agree, it was a beautiful ceremony and the Commencement speaker, former director of the FBI, Louis Freeh, mentioned the tragedy this past year and the impact on the university and the community. He also acknowledged the presence of the FBI who were there. It was a beautiful ceremony. The President addressed the loss of the 5 students who passed away in the academic year who were being awarded posthumous degrees. I missed what he said about Guadalupe Ruiz's degree.
Regarding Xana, Ethan, Maddie and Kaylee, he said they met with Xana's family in a private ceremony on Monday and awarded them her degree, and they would be sending Ethan's degree to his family in the coming weeks. Maddie's parents accepted her degree in person. I didn't see Kaylee's 4 siblings or the Goncalves family accept hers, but they could have come up when I stepped away.
ETA: Louis Freeh's commencement speech was very moving and inspirational. He mentioned them all and gave many words of wisdom. <3
The University President said that they met on Monday with Xana's family and gave them a Certificate of academic recognition for her achievements at U of I. And they said that they were mailing a Certificate recognizing Ethan's academic achievement to his family.
Maddie's parents - mother and spouse were first on the stage to receive Maddie's post-humous bachelor's degree, and then Maddie's father was next and he also received a copy of Maddie's post-humous bachelor's degree on stage. This afternoon's ceremony will include the awarding of Kaylee's post-humous baccalaureate to her family. The University President said that the family members will always be a part of the U of I community.
It was well done with respect and dignity. I applaud the leadership team at U of I.
Also, the Student Government president (past president) spoke and she also mentioned the tragedy this year.
