My area:

2/27/10 Tsunami Information
(updated at 9:30am)
At 3:02am on Saturday, February 27, the National Weather Service issued a Tsunami Advisory for coastal Orange County due to a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Chile. A tsunami capable of causing significant damage to coastal areas is NOT expected; however, strong currents may be present along beaches and other coastal areas beginning at approximately 12:02pm today.
Officials at city, county, and state beaches in the area may be closing the beaches starting at approximately noon as a safety measure.

This is a precautionary move only. The maximum expected ocean-level runup is approximately 2 feet. City officials are in contact with experts from the National Weather Service and other agencies to monitor the situation.
If you are in a beach or low-lying coastal area, please stay alert and watch your surroundings. Follow the directions of lifeguards, law enforcement, and other public safety officials.

If they reported 20 ft waves at the buoy, just how high would they develope when the hit the coast?

I think I saw earlier they said the water level could be 5' to 35'.

The time has passed but they said it can vary an hour or so.

The original arrival time was just a guess.

I don't know, but from what I have heard the waves may not be the biggest threat, but the inflow of water, then the pull out, and repeat this over and over. The pull out, pulls alot of things and people (if they are near the water) out with it (strong current). Many people think of a tsunami as a big wave, and while it can be, it is usually the rushing in and out of water that causes the damage too.

the water is draining out of Hilo bay on TV...6 inch surge in oceanfront ponds on the big island

  • #95
Discoloration is caused by debris stirred up from the ocean floor as the wave passes.
