I had a favorite cousin growing up that became estranged from his family for a reason never explained- one rumor was he was in jail which was we now know was false - he was just a bit of an oddball scholar type fellow. He recently moved back to his home state and my family has been able to reconnect with him.

Former estrangement or issues became unimportant. As we get older we start losing beloved family members so it’s wonderful when we regain a lost one.

Reach out and reconnect - time slips by so fast!

So true. I think that same sentiment everyday. You just never know when...

I want a love button for your comment. I come from a lifetime career in state govt so I absolutely hold our elected officials and all city, county and state employees accountable. I can tell you from experience. Calls and complaints made to the governors office about specific state or public agencies would result in a call from the governor’s executive assistant to solicit an inquiry.
The squeaky wheel always gets the grease.

I hope the Governor does make a call to get the Alabama Crime Bureau involved as maybe they can drum up a few leads for the Chief and his Detectives in Mobile where according to them they have run out of leads. Let's help the Chief drum up leads as he said he has none!

Not related to this case but to the issue of involving govt and their role in helping to find missing people. I have to say that in the MT case it was so strange to see the case played out in the national media and the worldwide outpouring of love and caring but the Gov of Iowa not once reached out to the family. I think eventually she did send a message after the body was found but I thought the lack of a personal touch or note of caring to a family in crisis was beneath the dignity of ANY Governor. I hope the Gov of Alabama does better job in this situation than what we saw in Iowa. NOTE: This is NOT a political statement but rather a commentary on the role of Governor in our state governments.

Just watched a PC given by a Lt. in a Homicide group in another missing persons case. He gave a brief 5 min. statement to the press after working 20 hrs straight to break his case. He was impressive in his focus and attention to what was important to him, namely finding the missing person. But there was tremendous emotion behind his statements that was visible to all that saw him briefly speak. He was in a simple word: COMPELLING.

The contrast in treatment between that case and this case was STARK. It doesn't even matter what that case was as the only reason I searched it out was a friend in LE had said that it was one of the better examples of quickly solving a missing case that they had seen in quite awhile. I agree. The Lt was impressive as was the teamwork of a large number of different organizations across city, state and federal lines along with community groups.

Here are the differences between what I saw in that case and the DV case: Immediate action. Pulling in FBI immediately. Activating search protocols to include area Sheriffs, all levels of local PD and alerting State Police and State Park Police and Child Protective Services. There was passion from the Lt. along with caring for the missing victim and he reported working 20 hours straight and the team worked 48 hrs straight at one point to pull in information from all over the country. There was also a relentless pursuit of any and all leads both local and distant. Neighbors and friends stepped forward and they were interviewed by the police (no hiding friends here thank goodness). There was a very active on the ground searching by volunteers immediately after the missing event occurred in multiple locations. Rigorous examination of anyone involved with the missing person including all family and friends. The Lt's case had an unfortunate outcome in that the missing person was murdered. But the deep sadness and heartfelt caring was clearly seen in the face of the Lt when he was giving his update. If anyone I ever cared about went missing I would want that Lt on the case I know he is a consummate professional and that he cares about the missing and he won't stop until his case is wrapped and delivered to the DA.

VS What has been seen in this case: Very little to nothing. Case bumped between groups within Mobile PD almost like a game of hot potato. We don't even know which way she turned going out of the Shell station or who she was with as everyone involved has been shielded from view by LE and the 'Family'. How can the public help if they don't know what or who they are looking for? Passion and Caring from LE/Mayor/Gov/State Senator/Congressperson: None in evidence. Chief seemed out of energy in the same way he was out of leads at his press conference. Asked for public help in finding DV but provided NO INFORMATION FOR PUBLIC TO WORK WITH. Has the Detective charged with leading this case ever spoken to the Media? I haven't seen it. Has anyone here? Has the Mayor ever commented on any of the missing cases that all seem to go unsolved in Mobile? The Chief has the stated goal of making Mobile the safest Town in America. That's a tall order when the violent crime stats look the way they do and most missing people in Mobile stay missing or turn up dead. Working with other agencies: None visible here. No visible boots on the ground looking for the missing DV. Given the lack of visible activity one must wonder what else is going on with Mobile Police and this case. Do they know DV is deceased and are trying to solve that case or are they simply trying to cover up what happened when she went missing because of who she was with that night on the party train? It makes absolute sense to keep information close when working a case to protect the investigation. But the Mobile PD has not made a compelling case to demonstrate that they are doing anything to work the case so it is unclear whether or not there is any investigation to protect. Pulling the CCTV video from the internet and threatening the press to pull the CCTV and keep if away from public view is quite unusual. Why did the press agree? Why nothing new to report since the CCTV was pulled other than the Chief saying he is out of leads?

Maybe the Chief will surprise us all. Maybe the Detective on the case has been working to establish a timeline and find DV. Maybe the FBI has been engaged to assist with the GPS system on the vehicle or track the path of the phone that was supposedly retreived by the unnamed 'friend' of DV's who was on the party train that night she went missing. But these are presently both huge Maybe's as neither of these individuals have done anything to publically convince anyone that they are in fact doing anything to find DV. If the Gov. of the State of Alabama does anything I think it would be a huge help to the public if they could simply confirm that something/anything is being done by the Mobile PD to find DV.

I remember this and remember thinking maybe LE knew much more than we did but then there was no arrest.

I read this New Yorker article on police informants this weekend and while I think it's a real long-shot, it made me think. Why isn't LE publicly making DV a priority? The Throwaways
Bumping to the front just in case this got missed in the rush.

It’s all in the state statutes and administrative code in answer to your note. Which I do appreciate! It’s an important topic.

The article on informants was fantastic. The police called Rachel Hoffman "just another drug dealer" on national TV after they set her up on a crazy drug sting for hard drugs and a gun over a tiny amount of pot in her purse. She was a clean cut college kid from a good home. How many times does this happen to people who don't have the parents Rachel did to get the story into The New Yorker? It breaks your heart.

Looking like a possibility to add to the list. Early statement from 'MIL' was reason given to her for LE pulling down the tape was, "...that it put DV in danger". A real headscratcher of a statement IMO.

Agree. She was treated as if she were a disposible human being by LE.

Wonder if that is what happened to DV? If so, Mobile PD aren't even acknowleding her at all and seem to be simply hoping the case interest with stop. Unless Mobile PD materialize something soon this might go down as one of the most unimpressive missing case files by a local PD and that is certainly saying something as we have seen some very poor performances by LE on missing cases. Entire situation is baffling and pathetic at the same time as the more time that passes the less likely people will remember anything or that CCTV and digital information will be available.

Makes me wish I lived there. I would make a ruckus about it to LE, to the press, anyone and everyone.

Where is her family? Why aren’t they beating down doors and screaming from rooftops?
You can make a ruckus from anyplace in the world and help. All the involved parties are on facebook and LE even is on twitter. Post away asking for action and justice for DV. The press has not been asking probing questions so it seems they are playing along with local LE belief that questions/answers could put DV in danger. So much time has passed and I wonder if questions/answers could still have any impact on DV safety? The lack of guidance from LE has been particularly poor IMO. Just wish the press would do their job.

Have been/will continue to follow. I have shared her flyers and info far and wide.
Nationwide to be exact. Her flyers are plastered on big trucks, and on shipping containers that go out thru that port. And so many other places. We don't exclude any ideals on where she might be at this point.
She is important to me.
***At several times when I was barely 18 and for a few years following that, I could've called myself a "street kid", and my parents were top-notch. The decisions were mine. (thank goodness I never had kids) Now I know I am "street-wise". Either way, I never judge.*** ;)
Also, my brother-in-law and a huge chunk of my heart lives in Mobile. He and his kids are all I have left of my dear 2nd husband. :(

PM the admin that is on duty to ask the question. You might be ok as long as its a family member speaking but double check to make sure.
