If her phone had a Google app on it, police should be able to find out if the friend’s story is true, b/c they’ll be able to track exactly where it went.

I’m just guessing, but police may have told JDT the friend wasn’t a suspect because his story matched the data on his phone and hers.
I am not sure who the person was that 'found' the phone but I don't believe that he was in any way a good 'friend' to DV. The police also could have lied to JDT about not being a suspect because it suited their goals. I don't think they would have had cell phone data at the time they made the statement to JDT as that was fairly early in the investigation. I also don't believe we understand all the issues with how exactly the phone was found or what the phone itself disclosed to LE in terms of information and possible GPS trail.
Also, this so called good 'friend' has been MIA since this entire episode hit the press and has done ZERO to support efforts to find DV. Not a good person and not a good friend IMO based on how he has behaved in this case. WHO IS HE? WHO IS HIS FAMILY? IS HIS FAMILY CONNECTED TO LE OR THE POLICE CHIEF? WHY IS HE INVISIBLE? He seems to have crawled into the woodwork and stayed out of the limelight with the press. Without a lot of information and based simply on his behavior so far I believe this person HAS NOT been cleared by LE and is in fact a POI and possibly a witness to a larger crime that is of interest to Mobile LE. I also wonder if the reason he is hiding is that he is in some way tied to narcotics either buying or selling and possibly was HE the reason for the extra time spent at the gas station? I also wonder if LE are somehow protecting this person for some unknown reason? Is the family not speaking out about him because they don't know him or perhaps THEY ARE AFRAID OF HIM or HIS FAMILY OR HIS CONNECTIONS? We can't answer these questions because we don't know who he is. But I feel confident that we can say he is not a good person or good friend to DV based simply on his behavior so far.
Something is not right about how this entire situation with the return of the phone happened and the story with the double flashing lights and this person driving off and not checking back for his friend has honestly been a very weak story and hard to believe. Its one of those stories that when someone tells it to you that you scratch you head and say, "You must be kidding"! The whole crazy story just seems something that a bunch of tweekers would come up with to cover up a big mess.
If you had a friend who just got a car, wasn't super familar with roads, had maybe had a few drinks would you drive off and leave her behind when you realized she wasn't following you? No, most people would be concerned and circle back and track her down and get her home or to the next location on their party train.
This story makes little sense and I believe its just a coverup for something else that happened that none of the people involved in this sorry case want to be honest about. Do I have any degree of confidence in LE doing anything about this particular case? No I don't based on the press conference by the Chief. He had zero sense of urgency, seemed to have zero knowledge and seemed out of leads. But despite how he seemed at the PC my suspicion is that he is playing a larger game that might perhaps benefit him but that has zero to do with finding DV as she is deemed disposible to his larger game. If the car hasn't been found my guess is that it is in a container heading out of the country, sunk in the gulf or taken apart for parts at some chop shop. As to DV I am not certain LE is doing much. She might have just been the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time and totally trusted the wrong people to take care of her and watch out for her.
Auto crime and drug crime are both big issues in Mobile and could both come into play in this case. We never knew from the details available in this case how the people that were out partying that night ended up at the gas station. Allegedly it was to look for the phone. We don't know. It could be any number of things that put these people at the gas station but the idea that another car or 2 shows up and then stays for a period of time leads me to believe it was drug related activity in one way or another.
