What does this shooting accident have to do with "You guys just can't stand it that you lost"?? Again, there is a political thread on WS. Stop making this into an us-versus-them (or me-versus-you) diatribe. Please.

It goes to the heart of why the press is nipping at his heels like a shark. It was a hunting accident and the press is treating it like Watergate...who knew what and when? It isn't like Cheney invited the foreign minister of Russia to dinner and shot him in the heart with a spear gun in the dining room of the White House. It had nothing to do with anyone doing their job and didn't change one thing about how the government was ran. I don't really care if I were ever informed about it.

Let me ask this, as a little intellictual honestly exam, how outraged were you when Harry Reid....a sitting Senator and the Democratic party leader.....failed to disclose that he had a stroke for 3 days?

Would Right versus wrong work better for you? It is a post about the Vice President....you know it will be political. There is a Tom Cruise and a Brittney Spears post that will spare you from the politics if you don't like them. Lately, it seems like it is me-vs-the world! But even if I am the last one standing I will argue to the death that you stand up for your Country and defend her at all costs.

How is it that I....the Cal.....didn't ask THAT first? :D I mean that is textbook me right there. Bravo.

This is just another chance for the Dems along with the press to look like idiots....there was already an article accusing Cheney of shooting his long-time friend as a warning for Scooter Libby not to testify. Wouldn't Dick have just invited Scooter for a quail hunt instead? :D

I think in the end the Democrats will call for a commission to investigate the shooting and will really piss off the American public that would say prefer to see the Democrats use Congress to accomplish the people's business. Isn't there an eminent domain abuse bill that the Democrats can champion a cause to defeat?

Hi Cheko1,

See my post up above. Where has it been confirmed that VP had been drinking? I'm not being a smarta** whatsoever, I'm very sincere in my trying to figure out facts vs innuendos. All I thought I read here was something to the fact that VP likes his martinis in the mornings...and after that, is it just people therefore assuming that he drank before going hunting? I'd really like to know.

That's all it is Dawgie, just surmisal. From listening to these news shows, evidently Cheney's reputation precedes him in this area, as I have heard it brought up on CNN with Reagan's son who does commentary and on Chris Matthews show on Fox. If they are bringing it up it is fair game to discuss here, but I agree at this time there is no link to it except maybe on a transcript which means nothing.

I personally think the way this whole thing has been handled it leads to a bit of suspicion about what really happened and there has got to be some reason it wasn't dealt with straight up.

The TOS is attack the post and not the posters. When you include phrases such as "You", "You Guys" etc directing insults at the posters it is a violation of TOS.

Okie dokie but in my world "you" and "you guys" is a generic argument for the entirety of the opposition argument. I will find a different term...but I gotta warn you, you might not like it any better! ;) Just kidding.

I probably ought to get around to reading that TOS! :D

A "Beer, Or Two, and a Gun"

The Nation -- Vice President Dick Cheney, who was forced to leave Yale University because his penchant for late-night beer drinking exceeded his devotion to his studies, and who is one of the small number of Americans who can count two drunk driving busts on his driving record, may have been doing more than hunting quail on the day that he shot a Texas lawyer in the face.

Katherine Armstrong, the wealthy Republican lobbyist who is a member member of the politically-connected family that owns the ranch where Cheney blasted his hunting partner, acknowledged to a reporter for MSNBC that alcohol may have been served at a picnic which was served Saturday afternoon on the dude ranch where Cheney shot Harry Whittington.

This article has some information on the size of pellets, and says there were from "six to 200" that hit Mr. Whittington. The range is still stated as 30 yards. Also, some more information on the "heart attack".

http://snipurl.com/mla1

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) -- The lawyer shot by Vice President Dick Cheney during a hunting accident is expected to stay in the hospital for about a week after suffering a mild heart attack when a shotgun pellet in his chest traveled to his heart.
-------------------------------------
Hospital officials said they were not concerned about the six to 200 other pieces of birdshot that might still be lodged in his body.

Cheney was using 7 1/2 shot from a 28-gauge shotgun. Shotgun pellets typically are made of steel or lead; the pellets in 7 1/2 shot are just under one-tenth of an inch in diameter.
-------------------------------------------------
The shot was either touching or embedded in the heart muscle near the top chambers, called the atria, officials said. Two things resulted:

- It caused inflammation that pushed on the heart in a way to temporarily block blood flow, what the doctors called a "silent heart attack." This is not a traditional heart attack where an artery is blocked. They said Whittington's arteries were healthy.

- It irritated the atria, caused an irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation, which is not immediately life-threatening. But it must be treated because it can spur blood clots to form. Most cases can be corrected with medication.
---------------------------------------------------
A Texas Parks and Wildlife Department report issued Monday said Whittington was retrieving a downed bird and stepped out of the hunting line he was sharing with Cheney. "Another covey was flushed and Cheney swung on a bird and fired, striking Whittington in the face, neck and chest at approximately 30 yards," the report said.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney planned to break his silence Wednesday in his first televised interview about the Texas hunting accident in which he shot a 78-year-old lawyer.

Cheney was to appear on Fox News Channel at 6 p.m. EST, the network and the White House announced. He hasn't spoken publicly about the accident Saturday that hospitalized Harry Whittington of Austin.
-----------------------------------
The interview was scheduled for 2 p.m. and Fox said excerpts would be aired before the 6 p.m. program.

Thank you, Scandi. I'm glad someone let me know. :blowkiss:
You are right, if they're talking about it in the news, etc., it can certainly be talked about and lobbed around here. But, I wanted it clear in my mind that it is not fact, but rather rumors/innuendos for now. To me, that is important.

I honestly haven't followed this to the "nth" degree as maybe others have, as IMO based upon some experience, "investigations" take time, and you can't believe all media and leaks, etc. So, I will try to reserve judgment until then. (Then again, where I am REALLY naive is in the political arena, LOL.)

I still have faith that it will be investigated properly, and IF VP's BAC was anything out of the ordinary, then it should be dealt with just as it would be with anyone else.

Thanks again, Scandi.

I was suprised to see just how small the bird shot is. It is like grains from what they showed on tv.

At a distance of 30 yards, using 7 1/2 shot, with the standard 28 gauge 3/4 oz. load, unconstricted cylinder, according to the following Shot Pattern Density Calculator, there are approximately 158 pellets within a 30" pattern.

http://www.rfgc.org/reload/pattern_density_calc.htm

Seems the doctors should be able to give us a far better estimate than the "between 6 and 200 pellets."

Thank you Buzz.

However, call me stubborn on waiting for actual facts - "may have been served" does not mean it was; it also does not take into account that VP did indeed drink; if he did, how much, and did it cause him to be impaired; and, also not mentioned yet (I believe) - did Mr. W also drink? And if so, how much and was HE impaired when he did not call out as he was supposed to?

To me, it's still all speculation of reporters, etc. trying to gather a great story and trying to fill in blanks until more facts are actually known. Hey, it's okay. We all know that's their job and the public is certainly wanting to know.

Thanks again, Buzz

I'd seen it earlier this morning.....you can see the post at #327 rawstory.com was one of them. I also have read the innuendoes on this thread. Guess I assumed he drank if it was served with a meal. :slap:

It is difficult to obtain the facts, and the delay in reporting has led to so much speculation.

Denada dear Dawgie lol

Hi Becba, On Fox this morning they said the shot was about the size of a typed letter 'o'.

That was interesting seeing that alcohol was served with lunch, so the possibility is there he or they could have had something, but the fact remains that Cheney was not given a test to see what his blood alcohol level was, so we will really never know the answer to this IMHO.

This question was posed at the medical news conference this morning and that is when they cut off the conference.

On Dayside just now they said the fact they put off telling the public is the bigger story now.
