I'm guessing that similar to UK police, many Australian police are not fully armed? Sine there are not many armed citizens they don't need to be?

The NSW police are armed. Regular police used to be unarmed, years ago.


All uniform and standard issue equipment are provided, including the new Integrated Light Armour Vest (ILAV) and "D" ring thigh holsters. Officers carry a range of issued appointments including:

• the Glock pistol
• conducted electricity weapon (TASER)
• OC (Oleoresin Capsicum/pepper) spray
• baton
• handcuffs

"The father, 50, was the shooter killed at the scene. The son, aged 24, is in a critical but stable condition.
Lanyon also confirmed investigators were not looking for a third offender.

Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said search warrants were carried out at Bonnyrigg and Campsie in connection with the investigation into the attack.

He said it had been confirmed the 50-year-old gunman was a licensed firearms holder.

He said police were satisfied they had gathered six firearms from the scene and following the raids.

This is interesting, as Australia has some of tightest gun control laws in the world. Before you can get a licence you need to show that you've got a genuine reason to own the firearms, of which self-defence isn't one.

Someone here asked how these 2 prepped for this without anyone knowing (paraphrasing). According to this update, I suspect those they lived with DID know what they were planning:

"They also raided a home in Bonnyrigg, made two arrests and seized six firearms from the property"

Bonnyrigg is the address shown on the younger murderer's driver's license that has been in numerous media images. (seen here in a basic google image search)

So why did this 50 yr old have EIGHT licensed weapons. He didn't live in the outback and need to defend his sheep or cattle.

He lived in a small home. What was his explanation for so many weapons?

It was briefly discussed I think one page back. Seems pretty easy to get a gun license in NSW if you really want one.

Why was this 50 yr old licensed for 6 weapons? For what purpose did he need that many? I thought there were very strict gun laws in Australia?

I guess that strict gun laws equates to "no guns" to non-Aussies. That is not the case.

Agricultural/pastoral pest control, security jobs, shooting competition/shooting range activities are some of the acceptable reasons for eligible people.

The laws are as strict as the populace allows.

From what I have read, officers did shoot. They killed one of them. Critically maimed the other.

The house in Campsie was an AirBnB.


About five other people staying at an Airbnb in Campsie where the two gunmen were also staying have returned this morning. Police have brought out bags of their belongings so they can find somewhere else to stay.

A listing on Booking.com shows a room in the house can be rented for $70 a night.

This excludes the identity of one of the gunmen, who was also killed.

Friends, I am home safely from the outdoor menorah lighting. Plenty of police there to ensure our safety.

The treacherous part is that it is FREEZING and the snow has turned to icy patches. It’s a block away from my apartment, so walking required caution, even for that short distance.

Thanks to the weather, the local politicians curtailed their speeches

I offered the police to please let me get them coffee, but they said they are not allowed. Which I kind of knew, but am so grateful for their presence.
