Also questions about the boyfriend.

Is this just a friend or a “boyfriend”? Pretty hard for a couple of teens to endure a long distance relationship. Adults have difficulty.

Is he a longterm boyfriend or an “online boyfriend” who sent her money to buy a ticket to visit? I can go in a whole other direction if it’s the latter. PB is the perfect vulnerable kid looking for love and stability. Could the couple have set her up and she realized at the last minute what was happening?

I want to know who bought her the ticket and how long ago was the trip planned.

MOO

This has been a train of thought I have been pondering all along.

PB does not seem to have a long travel history. I would assume she met the boyfriend locally, at school for example, and he moved away. I do seriously wonder how this trip was all set up and paid for.

How would PB have enough money for the plane ticket by herself? Anyone know how much the cheapest ticket would have cost?

Did she "owe" money to TB or JW and they wanted some favor from her?

Agreed.
Something stinks here and it’s not just the house they resided in.
I don’t think PB understood what she was getting in to until it was too late and then when she realised, it all kicked off. Something happened in the car or possibly beforehand but she never made it to the airport.
Again just my OO.

It was stated several times in links on the thread that she was going to visit a boyfriend from when she was in high school. He had moved away.

A girl that couldn’t feed herself and looked disheveled like she didn’t belong to locals… it’s not looking good for PB. Flights from Bundaberg to Perth are just under $500 each way.. $1k just for flights is a lot of coin for someone on the bones of their arse that can’t afford food. .. JMO
I’d like to retract the costs I quoted.. I just investigated further.. Qantas is min $700 to max $3600 EACH WAY according to their website. How the hell could she afford that?!?

I come from close to the area where this happened, but not the exact town, and I can say that a good part of the problems with youth are related to drug issues. In small towns like this, if it's a really bad family, most people will not intervene because they might do something really bad to you or even a family member. LE can't even do anything often because they're so underfunded in these small towns, and sadly, it usually takes a death for something to be done. I believe PB was approximately 180cm tall, so many may have thought PB was much older than they were.
Sad, but I think somewhat universal. It also seems like Pheobe herself was pretty strong--at least she is described that way by others, if they're telling the truth at all remains to be seen. So she may have been good at deflecting concern as well.

I noticed going back to the text with her friend, the one which I personally think reads as fairly normal teen stuff. Pheobe is quick to compliment her friend and the tone of it all has an "everything is gonna be alright" vibe to it, at least IMO--i.e. 10 days "beautiful x". Either Pheobe was not particularly fearful in that moment OR she did not want to burden her friend. Same might be possible for her boyfriend. She might have just wanted to be young and happy. Poor kid.

Might she have been eligible for a student fare? A youth fare?

I worked in the travel industry for decades and we cannot go by the fares on the website as what someone actually paid.

Using Link as the airline, and under 17 I get a lowest far of $747 USD, but it is a long long connection so the trip takes 22+ hours.

A much shorter trip via Quantas or Virgin is $939 USD, for about trip of about 8 hours.

That sees like an awful lot of money, either way, for a 10 day trip for her.

Where are you getting that information Herat?

Looking at upcoming flights, it looks like the flights are fairly short:

I was using Kayak.com and looking for the cheapest fares, under age 17.

example of one tomorrow: Link Airways FC454 Flight Status: Bundaberg to Brisbane Tracker | Trip.com

That is just the first leg From Bundaberg to Brisbane. She would need to then board a second flight to Perth.
Brisbane to Perth is a flight time of around six hours. It's a long way.
  • 2,245 miles
  • 3,613 kilometers

Are you just looking at flights to Brisbane? Pheobe was travelling to Perth.

Ok, so her high school boyfriend is in Perth, then? Even more reason for people to step away from blaming him for now.

I had read Pheobe had a flight to Brisbane, and then was traveling onward but it was not clear it was by air. That is, I thought she might have been being picked up in Brisbane or taking a bus, etc onward.

So from what we know of Pheobe living with the housemates, it was said to have been short-term, correct? a month or so? She probably purchased her tickets prior to moving in with them. We do not know her living situation beforehand, do we?

If she was at home, or in a foster home or someplace where she was not paying rent and had a job, then I personally can see a young person placing a priority on buying a plane ticket to go see a love who moved away instead of eating properly, etc. I think it is exactly the kind of thing a free-spirited kid, who was around crappy adults would do. Who knows, it might have worked out well for her? :(

Yes, I was mistaken all along somehow about her end destination. I've been doing several things offline and popping back on/following along so somehow as I read along I thought she was going onward overland from Brisbane. I'm straight now though.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

As above, the boyfriend lives in Perth, 2245 miles away, it's the opposite side of the country. I believe he moved there for work - not long out of school so I imagine it's mining.

Yes, understood. Knowing this now and given the distance, I wonder if Pheobe intended on returning? I wonder if she actually had a one way ticket, and the housemates realized this as they neared the airport--maybe after the call with the boyfriend--and that caused some sort of rage event?

If the housemates expected Pheobe to chip in, and Pheobe was trying to have some money for travel, then that really goes a long way towards explaining her unkempt and starving appearance at the grocery. I don't think it has to involve drugs at all. It really could just be a struggling kid trying to break free, and an adult (adults?) with a violent anger problem furious that someone else was "getting away" instead of being under their thumb.

Yeah, that's the impression I got as well after hearing about the supermarket worker.
Really sad that Pheobe was living rough. Even more sad that it appears that she'll never make that journey 😢
