Packer also is a suspect in a September armed robbery in Santa Barbara, according to authorities there.

He was arrested Jan. 14 after Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at his Ventura home in connection with a Sept. 23 armed robbery at a gas station in the 4000 block of State Street, according to a January news release.

Ventura police worked with Santa Barbara law enforcement officials on that investigation. During that robbery, the suspect allegedly threatened the clerk with a gun, stole items including a wallet, and threatened to kill the victim and the victim’s family if they spoke with police, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department news release.
............................
Authorities have been tight-lipped about the investigation into the Husted killings. Sheriff’s officials said in the months after the crime that they were making progress on the case and believed the couple was targeted, but they declined to comment on possible motives.

The investigation into the case was complex, largely because the victim’s lives weren’t simple, Bonfiglio said last year.

Investigators submitted hundreds of pieces of evidence to crime labs in the case, and served numerous search warrants, many related to the victims’ records or properties.

KNX 1070 news radio had a story at the top of the hour and said DNA evidence was key to the arrest. Nothing more specific than that. I hope we hear more details at 3 PM.

Here's a link to an earlier article about the subject suspect, from his arrest in January for the September robbery of the gas station.

The suspect pulled a gun and threatened the clerk who was in the process of closing the store. The man ordered the clerk to the ground where he stole the clerk’s cell phone and wallet along with cash and cigarettes from the store.

During a several month investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives also learned that the suspect had phoned the victim’s friend and threatened to kill the victim and the victim’s family if he spoke with law enforcement about the crime.

OMG! This is great news!

I was beginning to feel they would never solve this case.

It just goes to show we can never ever give up hope.

God bless the families. It will not bring their loved ones back to them but they at least can have peace that justice will be served and that this monster is finally off the street.

Officials on Monday revealed that a nearly yearlong investigation had culminated in the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect found through a DNA database. Sheriff's investigators said they had no reason to believe the alleged killer knew his victims, Brock and Davina Husted, both 42, although they were still looking into whether he had targeted their home for a robbery.

...The big break in the case came about two weeks ago, Brooks said. That was when DNA discovered at the crime scene was found to match that of Packer, who had been arrested in Santa Barbara earlier this year and charged with armed robbery and making criminal threats. A DNA sample was taken from him at the time.

Such a senseless crime.

He seemed to have targeted them because he thought they had money and value possessions inside their home.

I believe the motive will strictly be to invade the home with intentions of robbing them and when he found them inside he killed them both so he wouldn't leave any alive adult witnesses behind.

We are living in scary times where home invasions seem to be happening on a regular basis and the victims are being gravely harmed or murdered.

I am wondering now if they will find a possible link to the murder of Wendy DiRodio two weeks later in the Ventura Keys.

In an end of the year 2009 summation, The Ventura County Reporter said:
"Authorities have since denied that the husted/DiRodio murders are related. The county sheriff’s department also maintains that it has enough evidence to prove that the killings were premeditated and carried out by two different suspects. That information has yet to be released as the investigations continue into 2010."

At around page 5 and 6 of this thread, starting with post #123 the DiRodio murder is discussed.

I've been following this case locally, and didn't know there was a thread here at WS!

The local newspaper online has a comment section and some have posted that they knew the suspect, Joshua Packer, from high school. Some have said he's from a broken home, a football player at Ventura High School, and he evidently left school, but got his diploma later. He's described by some as having a temper.

LE has other evidence in addition to DNA, but is withholding that information from the public at this time.

KFI radio, Los Angeles, interviewed one of the detectives in the case today, and he stated that this is one of the most horrific cases he's dealt with.

I am so thankful there was finally a break in this case....as with all of these crimes it was hard to take, but this one was specifically sad and upsetting. What a truly awful, terrifying and horrific crime in every way.

I wouldn't be surprised if the perp is a meth addict.....it just fits - MOO

My memory fails me....was the door unlocked or did he break in?

Hi browneyes, always nice seeing you. From what I remember the door was unlocked. It was a slinding glass door. I'm pretty sure he just slid it open and walked in.

Such a horrible case. This little family just doing their normal evening things and this monster comes in and destroys the family in minutes.

I was just thinking about this case the other day. I'm so glad there was a break in it.

Praying the Husted's get justice. :rose:

Wow. He's only 20 now. Imagine if he wasn't caught? Really happy to see a break. Thank DNA once again.

Arraignment postponed for Packer in Husted slayings

The arraignment of murder suspect Joshua Graham Packer, charged with killing a Faria Beach couple and their unborn child, was postponed today until July.

Superior Court Judge Bruce Clark set the new arraignment for July 19.

Packer’s lawyer, Benjamin Meserang of the Ventura County Public Defender’s Office, asked the court for more time to review hundreds of pages of police reports given to him by prosecutors before he enters a plea for his client, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Frawley.
