37-43 is not old, I agree. Middle age is typically defined as 45+. However, “young people” is a term that typically applies to teens and sometimes young 20s and makes me wonder if there is a reason a defense attorney night want others to perceive those involved as significantly younger than their years.
its probably locally. its young professionals in the bay area.

Not what I think of when someone says "young people" though. I think teens and twenties.

I guess 40-something is the new late adolescence.

IMO.
i think locally to SF they would be seen as young professionals.

“As of today at the court appearance, and I’ve done a bunch of cases, there were more reporters today, for this appearance, than there were for Scott Peterson’s initial appearance.”

One-On-One With Defense Attorney Paula Canny
I'd think there were plenty of reporters for Scott Peterson's initial appearance in Modesto, if not more, since the case had gone national by April 2003.

The last big murder/manslaughter case I can think of in San Francisco that went national was the dog mauling case in 2001 (death of Diane Whipple), which had to be moved and was tried in Southern California.

I don't think so. In the forever changing tech world late 30s would hardly be considered young.

So is the defense attorney implying there was drug use and partying by Bob Lee for several days leading up to his death? So what. Is that justification for a death sentence for Bob Lee?

Is she saying that her client is justified in stabbing Bob Lee and then leaving him to stumble around the streets of San Francisco and leave him to die a slow death?

I'm really interested in the source of the knife, did it come from NM's sister's kitchen. I think that is likely. If so, sure sounds like premeditation to me.
At the end of this NewsNation interview (past 4:00 mark), defense attorney hints at a potential scenario of Nima learning his sister had “suffered a trauma” and had potentially been “drugged.” Says “Any good brother would be upset about it.”

I suspect this is meant as a defense of the content of the FaceTime call and check-in text, not the stabbing, since she is also claiming the video footage is too grainy to identify her client. Might be painting a picture of victim being reckless and having known and unknown enemies and risky connections. JMO.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area. My ex was a programmer, he said he had a midlife crisis at 30, everyone was younger than him.

"Any good brother would be upset about it." Really? Any good brother would be so upset that he would offer the person a ride home, hide a kitchen knife on his person or in the car, and then stab him to death in a dark part of town with no one in sight to help? This attorney is crazy.

And does Nima have witnesses to the claim that Bob Lee is guilty of inflicting some "trauma" on the sister, and even "drugging" her? I guess the sister would be the witness. I look forward to seeing her testimony in the murder trial of her brother. Will they throw the real victim here, Bob Lee, under the bus and make up a story that creates sympathy among the jury for Nima? What about the friendly text from the sister to Bob Lee, and that Nima was over-reacting to something that night? She seemed fine and very friendly to Bob Lee.

I don't think Nima's sister knew anything beforehand about his plan to kill Bob Lee. I think Nima did not expect any cameras in that secluded area. But now that Bob is no more, she will try her best to come up with some story to save her brother.

But that’s not what Canny said. She said “young people” in an obvious attempt to create her own narrative in order to minimize the crime her client is charged with. She wants her listeners to think that whatever happened only happened because it’s typical behavior for todays partying mischievous young people. “Those crazy kids”. These people were adults. Full stop

I currently work in tech in the Bay, and I think both are true:

Many of these companies are filled with people in their 20s, and as early as their late 20s someone could easily start feeling out of place, like an "old person".

At the same time, many people in the industry maintain a party lifestyle well into their 40s, so you might meet e.g. a 45-year-old software engineer who you'd naturally think of as "young". I think this is related to the aggressively open-minded culture of Bay Area tech - you're not going to face much judgment for being a party animal in middle age.

Not that it's important to the case, but I think it's an interesting social phenomenon nonetheless.

JMO.

It's unfortunate that we only have toxicology on the victim in this case, Bob Lee. By the time NM was arrested, it was too late to do toxicology for the night Bob Lee was murdered. From the sounds of this article, it sounds like NM's attorney might use the toxicology report against Bob Lee, the victim. A blaming the victim approach is somehow likely. JMO.

In this kind of situation it helps to remember the victim did nothing to cause their own death. He didn't die from a drug overdose, he died from a vicious stabbing attack.

The full responsibility for that belongs to their killer.
