That's so awful! A child psychiatrist should know better than anyone how his actions would affect his patients. This is beyond reprehensible!

Why would they keep sweeping it under the rug?

Yes, it is the same doctor. The mother of a victim told Rainieri that Ayres had molested her son. This was when the news of the first civil suit came out. Rainieri said he wasn't surprised to hear about Ayres because there had been stories about him and boys for years.

Another woman who worked as a mediator in the San Mateo Family Courts also told the mother of a victim that there had been stories about Ayres for years.

Another therapist told a victim that he had heard stories as well.

And another therapist named Fran Acciardi actually went to Children's Services in the mid 1990s to voice her suspicions about Ayres but was told "There's nothing we can do. He's a doctor."

Childrens protective services are the ones who are in place to help our children but it seems they have forgotten about the protection of the children across the USA.Sad very sad so many have to endure abuse of any kind.

Mercy, more than anything I wish I were an enterprising California Civil Attorney....Mitch is spot on with the claims Childrens made about Levine. We are seeing yet again another strong thread possibly between these two.

Has anyone else noticed that Henry Gates Jr is on the Board at the Judge Baker Children's Center currently?

I sent him an email and made a follow up call urging that he use his considerable influence to ensure that Judge Baker and Children's Hospital opt for transparency with this situation. I have not heard back from him or his staffers as of yet....

Keep trying Gates, Believe09.

Persistence pays off.

Also, isn't Dr. Alvin Toussaint on the board of Judge Baker? He's very well known as well.

MikeysMommom: In the Ayres case, Children's Services in San Mateo County in California failed to act on complaints by victims for almost thirty years. When one complaint was made in 1987 by a therapist on behalf of a boy, the therapist recalled that Children's Services failed to investigate Ayres properly because they were using Ayres as their primary vendor.

Man, were they asleep at the wheel in that county or what...

So, for those who are keeping track, Children's Hospital in Boston has Ayres' employee records, while Judge Baker in Boston has Ayres' patient records.

In California, Ayres destroyed many of his patient records after the first boy sued him in California in 2003. Word is that his California civil lawyer advise him to destroy them.

But Ayres can't destroy those precious Judge Baker Boston patient records. As Judge Baker is a historical and teaching institution, they never throw out or destroy out any of their patient records. They have them going back to the early twentieth century. They are kept in something called the Harvard Depository.
Ayres must be sweating bullets over this.

I am heading to the home of a reseacher for Harvard today-I am going to talk to her about how pervasive the white wall is these days and see if she has any hints/suggestions. I found some incredible PDF's yesterday on statistics surrounding serial offenders who are physicians. It was a study and a book done based in Ohio. When I get back I will post the links...what struck me was the special section devoted to the profiles of male patients who were abused by medical personnel when children, and how their lives evolved as a group-it was amazing to see the pattern their lives took regardless of socio economic background!!!

I would be very interested in seeing that study and getting the name of the book, Believe09. Thanks for doing research.

Back from a family party-

Here is a link I found that focuses on the Ohio State Medical board, but I think the subjects and materials referenced easily apply to what we are seeing with Rife, Ayres and Levine.

http://www.patient-safety.com/osmb.htm

This refers to the "White Wall of Silence":
http://www.patient-safety.com/white_wall_of_silence.htm

This refers to the mentality of providers:
http://www.patient-safety.com/psychology.htm

Defensive documentation:
http://www.patient-safety.com/defensive_documentation.htm

Here is some of the literature I located:
http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/157/7/1189

snip:
We do not believe that sexual abuse of patients by members of the health care professions is going to go away, and we believe that few, if any, perpetrators can be rehabilitated....However, we believe that by sensitizing the overwhelming percentage of members of the health care professions who would not perpetrate such abuse, and by educating the consuming public, we can do much to slow the rate as well as to support those who fall victim to sex abuse.
snip

Finally, the most profound information I read was regarding those who have been sexually abused by physicians and individuals in positions of authority like clergy-
Many are victimized multiple times because they do not learn until they are older or the age of majority that such victimization is not normal. Many have outwardly normal lives going on to marry and have children, but have an overwhelmingly hollow feeling inside that they typically fill with alcohol, drugs or other risky behaviors. Invariably, if they do not confront their experience and obtain help, their lives are ones of struggle, pain and depression. The double edged sword is that they need professionals to ease the pain of their betrayal, yet they are sceptical of those who might be able to help them because of the boundries that were crossed when they were abused.

It is HEARTWRENCHING.

Lawyer Mitch Garabedian said on the Emily Rooney show this week that boys can be molested by a number of people. I know of Ayres victims who were molested by other adults who were then sent to Ayres... where they were molested again.

And bear in mind that Ayres was for many years the "designated sex abuse evaluator for the courts" in San Mateo County, California. Sick..

Concerning this line:

The double edged sword is that they need professionals to ease the pain of their betrayal, yet they are skeptical of those who might be able to help them because of the boundaries that were crossed when they were abused.

Can you blame the victims of Ayres for not trusting any psychiatrist?

So far I have spent the morning trying to shake the bushes to get to Skip and anyone else we can find who might be interested in Dr Ayres history here in the NE area...fingers crossed that my cell phone starts ringing off of the hook!!!

Thank you Believe09. Some of us have been trying to shake the bushes as well. Takes persistence and an unwillingness to give up.

Mercyneal--Just want to remind you that that was exactly what Art Silverman's role was here in Jackson County. He did trauma assessment, evaluation, and continuing therapy for the boys who had been molested. He specialized in boys with DD. He accepted the medical card so he was a busy man. The passing around of the boys is something that still concerns me greatly.

He also set up his home as a playground for boys--video games, swimming pool, etc. Being that his wife was a a busy child psychiatrist (consulted at our only day treatment center and was on staff at a large hospital), Art was alone a lot with his son and his friends. Those are the boys who Art pleaded guilty to molesting. I don't know about Ayres but I know Silverman looked for boys where ever he went. All you need to do is read his history. He was predatory since his teen years.

Is there any thought that Ayres abused his children or their friends?

  • #234
IIRC, Ayres had no children...

  • #235
No - Indeed- Ayres DOES have children. One daughter - who does not speak to Ayres or his wife. And one son, in his forties who is the same age as many of Ayres' victims. We don't know whether Ayres molested his son. But we do know that Ayres used to live in a house with an outdoor swimming pool. We do know that back in the 1970s Ayres invited one of his new medical partners over to swim with his eleven year old son. The partner said he only went once...didn't want to get too friendly with Ayres outside the office. The guy clearly had good instincts.

But Ayres does like photos of boys taking off their bathing suits. He had nude boy books in his possession when the police searched his home.

Ayres no longer lives in the place with the swimming pool, but what would stop him when he is now out on bail from hanging around public swimming pools and watching little boys in their bathingsuits?

Good questions, Missizzy.

Isn't it interesting that Silverman took those same photos as did our resident "celebrity" here in Ashland, James Auchincloss. Hundreds of photos of boys in swim wear. He awaiting trial for child 🤬🤬🤬🤬. I only know of the swim wear photos. Obviously, there's far worse.

IIRC, Gajdusek, also swam with the boys and photographed them. It does seem to be a common theme. Foulk, former director of the Napa State Hospital was also known to play with boys while they were minimally dressed.

I'd be very concerned about Ayres son.

  • #237
Yes, some people are concerned about Ayres' son.

  • #238
I think the odds are pretty good that ayres molested his son, or traded him off to some other "friend." Because of this feeling, I won't speak too harshly of him. He DID appear at trial every day. He DID glare at the victims and families in the hallway. He did openly scoff in court when witnesses made ayres seem guilty, and he did nod vigorously when the defense came up with threadbare explanations of ayres' behavior.

He's hitting that age now where the pain will start if he was molested. He's going to have some terrible reality to face when he begins to understand that he has personally and willfully added anguish to other victims lives. I hope that his anguish hits full force BEFORE the start of the next trial. (So that he's smart enough not to show up in support of a molester, exacerbating his feelings of guilt even further.)

  • #239
Might I add that Ayres' grown daughter did not show up at the trial. Word is that she is not on her father's side, or her mother's.

  • #240
Ayres' son's behavior in court reminds me very much of Gajdusek's sons' behavior. Most defended their "father" and sang the praises of all the opportunities he opened for them. Reading between the lines, it seems as if many of Gajdusek's sons seemed to distance themselves from the young men who claimed abuse. It's a mind trip all right. Just one of the other travesties connected with childhood sexual abuse--the total fracturing of the family.
