The person close to the family said that nothing in recent weeks suggested that Nick Reiner, 32, would be capable of such violence.

The person disputed accounts that suggested the family had been especially apprehensive in recent weeks about Nick Reiner’s behavior. Nick Reiner had struggled for more than half of his lifewith drug addiction, but the person close to the family said they were accustomed to working through his problems together.

He took issue with news accounts that suggested the family might have left the party early because of the son’s behavior. Nick Reiner’s behavior at the party, the person said, was not unusual to the Reiners, who had grown used to it over the years.

The day after the party on Sunday afternoon, Romy Reiner, 28, fled the house in anguish upon encountering her father’s body inside the house. Her roommate, waiting outside, called 911, the person said.

When the paramedics arrived, the person said, Romy Reiner told them that her brother lived on the property also, but she did not suggest to the authorities that her brother might be a suspect, as some news outlets have reported.

Romy Reiner did not see her mother’s body in the house and learned from the paramedics outside that she was dead, too, the person said.

Nick Reiner is calling in the heavies after being arrested for allegedly murdering his famous parents ... because Alan Jackson tells us Nick hired him as his defense attorney.

Alan is one of the best criminal defense attorneys out there, and he's no stranger to high-profile cases like this one ... he recently got Karen Read acquitted of murder in Massachusetts.

How does NR have enough money to hire Alan Jackson? I certainly hope the surviving family is not providing for NR’s legal team. (And maybe Jackson is pro bono, I don’t know.)

NR chose this path, he wanted to live his life, as many addicts do, the way he wanted. So now he should handle the consequences all by himself.

I read the discussion here of parents never giving up on the addict, how hard it is to leave the addict to the life he/she wants.

But doesn’t that mean they give up on other family members? Give up on relationships with others because they are so busy with and concerned about and financially “helping” the addict?

After trying and trying and trying, it might be prudent to stop.

Draw the line, because the addict won’t.

I guess this throws out the prior reports of them being found in bed together. Does this indicate a confrontation?

He is 32 now and Idk when he was possibly prescribed these drugs, if at all.

It sounds like he has had problems since he was a teen. I really wonder about psychotropic medication for teens. They are basically the test subjects.

The bar for insanity is pretty straightforward most places.

Did they know what they were doing was wrong? Did they know it would harm their victims?

If they answer is yes to either, he doesn't meet the bar.

IIRC, back in the stone ages when I studied this, in my area the criteria was whether at the time if the crime, could they tell right from wrong. Whether they NOW can tell right from wrong is a separate issue. And insanity is a “not guilty” plea. Guilty but mentally ill is a “guilty” plea. I suggested he would plead “GBMI” not insanity.

Whatever happened, it appears they were killed in different locations within the house. But yeah, it seems to cast doubt on some sort of ambush while they were sleeping. I'm going fight that escalated to violence.

There is nothing to suggest what the defense strategy will be. Modsnip: Off topic to this case

My opinion is that the estate has hired Jackson, not to get Nick off, but to ensure that as he moves through the justice system, his rights are protected, and an attempt to get him some mental health treatment. To lose respect for Jackson, as I read in this thread is unfortunate. Without defense, we have no system of justice. imo.

Who specifically would be the estate point person(s)?

Whomever is named executor. If none, the court will appoint one. imo

Same.

Of course we don’t know this family personally, but IMO these parents tried extensively and in every way to help Nick. He’s 32, didn’t have children where maybe then his parents would’ve taken them in; but otherwise at his age, making his choices, I think they seem to have tried everything.
Man, it’s not easy to lay down the law when it’s your kid. They tried tough love, 18+ times and it didnt work. so They probably thought they may as well try something else, What do they have to lose, what’s the alternative ? Does that mean that unless you abandon your child you’re considered a co dep. Rob Reiner is also a public figure I cant imagine what people would have said if he did abandon his kid. “ Super rich director doesn’t care about….” He couldn’t win.
As for Rob not letting Nick talk too much in interviews, I see some of that but Rob Reiner was a BIG personality, an actor but also a director, accustomed to directing.
I kind of saw it as a bit of saving face ( nicks face) I dont want to say rescuing because it has a bad connotation, but Nick was flat and disconnected, He struggled to give answers that a host could build on, he was occasionally rude. Half the time he couldn’t remember the question or would take digs at his dad. Rob was trying to make him look better. IMO before Nick put his foot in his own mouth. At one point Rob had to clarify a question for Nick b/c he must been daydreaming or something. he was very awkward. ( that ‘being Charlie’ interview is very telling iIMO)

That was his style and it’s what gave Nick a luxurious life. And also in an interview, Rob is “on.” In their private life at home, I believe Nick got an enormous amount of attention, as he was the problem child.

And aged 32, if he didn’t want to be around his father, or around either parent, he could have packed his bags and stayed away permanently, and try to make it on his own.

I can imagine the guests at that party and Nick asking them
“ are you famous? Did he truly not know or was he trying to make people feel like they were nobodies, like he didnt know who they were, It’s almost antagonistic

It is in my opinion, it screams of revenge. Knowing that the people were famous and peers of his parents, it was to embarrass them. ‘I’m going to make my father angry and take it one step further by asking his friends if they are famous’. That is so condescending and disrespectful. He has deep rooted anger. Maybe jealous that his father was an upstanding person and contributed positively to society. .

I agree @Luna2

Whatever had been going on at home was continued into the party where he sabotaged his parents by getting high and acting out to embarass them, knowing a fight would ensue.

How that accelerated into double murder is something we might never understand.

I keep thinking about How when compared to the actor in the doc” being Charlie and the host said you seem more mild mannered. Nick said “ oh I go crazy” almost like he was bragging a little. Rob said he could get heated too sometimes. I bet it often resulted in a power struggle. I bet some of it was about control for Nick. He couldn’t beat his dad at anything else, so he wore him down instead.

Ok, so this changes the timeline a bit. I figured he murdered them right after they left the party, but it now appears he wandered around for a few hours, returned, murdered them, and then checked into a hotel.

Nick Reiner appeared to be totally calm as he walked near his parent’s Brentwood home just hours before they were butchered, sending shockwaves through Hollywood.

The 32-year-old — dressed in blue jeans, a long-sleeve shirt, baseball cap and carrying a backpack — strolled by a local gas station just before midnight Saturday, as seen in footage obtained by The Post.

Rob and Michele were killed early Sunday morning, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney. The new surveillance footage places Nick close to the family home hours before his parents’ slayings.

That's addiction talking: It's so.simple - just give me endless money, a nice place to live, and leave me alone to be high.

This sums up what NR wanted to do......

“I come from a nice family,” he said. “I’m not supposed to be out there on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all these… things.” “just wanted to get back to my old life of like smoking weed, kind of taking some pills, like doing whatever I wanted.” “Just everybody use or don’t use… whatever.”

“kind of taking some pills”

That’s a true statement of an addict. It’s either Yes or No to pills, “kinda” is a term of denial. Lack of accountability by default when “kinda” is in the conversation.

It makes me wonder if his brain is so fried from the drugs that it led him to do this, or was he of sound mind, literally acting out of anger and revenge. I suppose it could be both, it’s just unreal.

Accounts from those who knew him paint a picture of guy who was out of control, even as a child.

Drugs can’t help though.
