Does anyone know if there is "mental health court" in California? when I worked in behavioral health in
AZ clients were processed through mental health court and often got lighter sentences. I personally prefer judges to be educated in Mental health over having a separate court program. I often felt justice was not served. I hope that any mental illness is taken into consideration but that it does not deflect from justice. Such as a short hospital stay and outpatient services would not satisfy me.

There definitely is in San Francisco as I have a friend who went through that process so I wouldn’t be surprised if that existed in the whole state but I can’t say for sure.

IMO, blood in hotel room is one subject that seems to have been exaggerated over time. For example, initial reports were blood was found on the bedding and in the shower of the rented hotel room. And now I'm seeing headlines describe a bloody mess and blood-spattered walls! I'm wondering if info about the Brentwood residence (crime scene) is being conflated with the hotel. JMO

Yes, there are "mental health courts" in CA. Here's some info on them and how they work:

Mental health courts (MHC) are a form of collaborative court that provides specific services and treatment to defendants dealing with mental illness. Mental health courts provide an alternative to the traditional court system by emphasizing a problem-solving model and connecting defendants to a variety of rehabilitative services and support networks. Each MHC has different participant requirements and available services. The goal of a mental health court is to:

• support participants successful return to society and reduce recidivism;
• increase public safety; and,
• improve individual’s quality of life.

How do they work?​

• Mental health courts only accept people with demonstrable mental illnesses that can be connected to the individual’s illegal behavior.
• Participation in a mental health court is voluntary and the defendant must consent to involvement in the program.
• Screening and referral to a mental health court should occur as soon as possible after arrest to insure early intervention.
• Screening is also used to determine whether a mental health court can provide appropriate resources and support to the individual.
• Mental health courts use a structure of case management based in intensive supervision/monitoring and individual accountability.
• Case management is supervised by a team of professionals; teams are typically comprised of members of the justice system, mental health providers, and other support systems.

And here is info for "mental health courts" specifically in LA. I highlighted 2 parts that might be an issue for his family keeping him out of prison and into an institution or program like a mental health court.

1) Currently experiencing symptoms. He seems fairly together IMO. It's not like he's stark raving mad, mooning passing cars, or pooping on telephone poles, and yelling at cars as they drive by (yes, those are all things I've personally witnessed). But, I'm not an expert on the subject so not sure if there are lessor symptoms for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders that he's showing that would check this box.

2) Not clinically stabilized in ongoing treatment. I'm thinking he could be stabilized with treatment, which wouldn't check this box. To be clear, ALL criteria has to be met.

Individuals must meet all the following criteria to be eligible for CARE Court:

• 18 years of age or older.
• Diagnosed with a disorder within the "schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders" class of disorders and currently experiencing symptoms. *View full list of eligible diagnoses.
• Not clinically stabilized in ongoing treatment.
• The individual's mental health is substantially deteriorating, and they are unlikely to survive safely in the community without supervision AND/OR need services and support to prevent relapse and deterioration.
• Participation in a CARE Plan is the least restrictive alternative and the individual is likely to benefit from participation in a CARE Plan.

The person who is subject to the petition for the CARE Court process is referred to as the "respondent." If you do not meet the requirements above, options for assistance are still available at The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.

Exactly. He targeted his anger on his parents to the point of murdering them. Yet, if this was because of meds or mental health diagnosis, then how come he did not slice the throats of other humans that night. He seemed well enough to get a hotel, shower, change, pick out a gatorade or other drink, go for walks, put his hands up without incident when surrounded by police. Seems like he was done living under his dad's shadow. Dad and Mom may have been like one to him. I don't buy a potential plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. He seems pretty sane to me. He appears to have acted on impulses to silence his parents which if that's the case, premeditation.

You may be right that Nick was done living under his dad's shadow. But here's the thing.... Killing someone as beloved as Rob Reiner does NOT throw light on that shadow to get rid of it. Quite the opposite IMO. It made the shadow he's living under bigger and darker. He'll never see the light now.

The knife may have limited investigative value but the act of disposing/hiding it is yet another strike against an insanity defence. It will be interesting to learn what he said to police upon his arrest.

There's been so much media coverage of this story that I'm bound to have missed something that everyone else here has already seen; for instance, I'm not sure what medication he was recently given that supposedly made him more erratic (could have been something the defense put out there to make the jury pool not already 100% against his client). There are certainly a lot of problems with mental health meds. I've been on one for over 20 years, but my issues were fairly minor (social anxiety mainly). There's been some benefit, although I never expected it to be a cure-all. Now, though, the main reason I'm still on them is because I can't get off them. But I don't buy that it was the new med that made him dangerous. His sister immediately thought it was him because "he's dangerous", which to me sounds like she's thought of him this way for a long time. I think there's a good chance that he spends the rest of his life in a mental health facility for the criminally insane (if imprisoned, I don't see him ever getting parole even if given the opportunity). He'll probably be spared the death penalty, especially since Rob was known to be against it. I'm against it under any circumstance (one of the few things i agreed with him on), but if they do give it to him, turn it up to 11.
