Yes! Had a chance to witness a few ECT sessions in my work. In one case, it was an 80 year-old patient whose transformation moved me so — I still think about it forty years later.

With respect to ECT it can be very effective however if the patient has had any heart issues they may not be eligible.

I thought I had read somewhere that Nick had suffered a heart attack or heart issue as a result of his drug use. If so, he may not have been a candidate for ECT.

Is it the defense that must prove Nick was insane at the time of the murder

From my research into the insanity plea , the burden of proof lays with AJ and as for the outcome if successful. Nick will be put into a mental health facility indefinitely and the defendant often will spend longer in the facility than if they pleaded guilty and recieved a prison sentence. It would appear he might be better off pleading diminished responsibility by reason of drug/ medication induced psychosis

JMO, I have a feeling they will be released. The prosecution will probably use the toxicology reports as evidence. Whether or not the reports reveal illegal drug use, the subject will be covered. IIRC, in LA it takes about 6 to 8 weeks for results?

Again my .02 ; NR's rage was against his parents.
Not the doctors who prescribed his meds.
Not the rehab stays nor the employees working there.
Not his siblings.
Not his drug dealer or 'friends' he indulged with while in his homeless phases.

Just his mom and dad.
Telling in that his misplaced anger and self-centered narcissism blamed the two people who cared and had tried to help him.
Awful.
Now they're gone forever out of his life, and NR has no one to blame except himself.

He hated his parents because they wanted him to stop using drugs.

He hated his parents because they wanted him to deal with his mental illness. They wanted him to take prescribed meds and get healthy mentally, and physically.

He hated his parents because they had rules and boundaries that affected his ability to get high.

He hated his parents because he wanted to live his life his way and they intruded and pressured him to live differently.

An addict only cares about the next high. They don’t let others get in the way of the next pill, smoke, drink, snort, needle etc. That’s all they care about. That’s their life.

Nick liked that life. That’s what he wanted. His parents stood in the way of Nick’s ability to live the life of an addict. He didn’t want to stop. He had no desire to change his life.

Nick wanted his parents’ money, house, and whatever else he could manipulate them into doing for him unequivocally.

He is a mentally ill, (would not be surprised in the least to find out he is schizophrenic), drug addicted immensely angry man/child who despised his parents for loving him and doing what they hoped would would help/save him.

The Reiners are guilty of loving their child. After all they had been through with Nick, they tried so hard and he hated them for it.

Nick is guilty of cold blooded murder. The murder of his parents. Such a horrible tragedy. Probably the only people who loved and cared about him he chose to brutally murder while they slept. If he did slit their throats, he’s truly a monster, mentally ill or not.

Nick Reiner should never walk among us again. Whether a mental institution, or prison for life, that’s where he belongs.

I know it’s said it takes about six weeks to receive results of a post-mortem toxicology tests but I can’t see how it takes that long when the patient is alive. For example many workplaces do routine drug testing of employees and especially if there’s been an accident on the job.

But in this particular case where it would seem there is no other suspect and with what is known about Nick . What do posters think would be reasons for him to wait .

A murderer can't profit from their conviction, so I think he'd lose any trust fund money upon conviction.

If I assume that NR has always had issues, even from when he was a young child, and the whole family knew it and did the best they knew how to help him and maybe know far more than I do about NR and why what happened might have just been a result of something no one could fix, then the family might hope for life in a controlled mental facility (if the estate can afford it). For all I know, they might even have seen this coming and could do nothing about it. So to me, it makes sense if the family wants to try and keep him in an environment where he is safe and everyone is safe from him. JMO.

And I have to be honest. I have no idea who Bill Hader is, either. So maybe he was being obnoxious, or maybe his short term memory was not working and his filter was off. The results would be the same, IMO.

I think Nick is rude, obnoxious, and that he gets a kick out of shocking others. His parents are wealth, Nick is entitled, and he wants his parents' lifestyle without effort or responsibility. Nick wants to be the cool kid hanging out by the pool getting stoned and, when he's in a bad mood, he wants to destroy and damage his parents property without consequence.

According to Nick, you don't "want to set him off." Why is that? The 32 year old man doesn't feel like controlling his temper?

That's not mental illness. That's cruelty, arrogance, self-indulgence, and disrespect.

Well due to his selfishness, he's lost all of that. He killed the only people who ever really cared about him, and now he'll never live in a opulent setting ever again nor do recreational drugs. I wonder how long it will take him to realize that fact. Even if he goes to a mental hospital for the rest of his life, it won't be the spa-like drug rehabs.
