Just my speculation...perhaps he hung the sheet to identify which room he was in if he was expecting a delivery of something he needed to acquire that could not be purchased over any counter in any store. Perhaps he waited there as long as he could or was told to go wait where he was later found. I can think of no other logical reason to hang a sheet when there are perfectly good drapes that can be closed to block an outsiders view.

It’s quite possible it was not a rational decision and that some disordered thinking lead to his decision to hang the sheet on the window. Sometimes people tend to try to rationalize irrational behavior.

Surveillance footage shows Reiner purchasing a sports drink with cash at a gas station in South L.A. around 8:20 p.m., roughly an hour before he was arrested. In the video, Reiner has a red backpack slung over his shoulder and is wearing a black and green jacket with white stripes and a dark baseball cap.

An employee at the Arco gas station said that Reiner was hanging out in the area for close to an hour before his arrest. The employee declined to provide his name to The Times because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

“He was just standing up there,” the employee said. “I don’t know if he was waiting for somebody, but he spent at least one hour just standing there.”

At one point, the employee said, Reiner lingered inside the gas station after he saw an off-duty security guard in the parking lot outside.

“He was nervous,” the employee said.

If he was nervous-especially putting up the sheets over the windows in the hotel, it's a clear indication that he wasn't insane and knew right from wrong and didn't want to get caught.

He was of sane mind to walk into a gas station store and use a credit card to purchase Gatorade. Plus, reacted to undercover law enforcement in store by staring down and turning away from them. Sounds like maybe the voices in his head finally ceased after he acted on impulses prior to 4am. If someone is truly insane at time of murders, they would not be about to be sane in every sense post killings. I do find it odd he did not clean up blood in motel shower which to me signals that he did not really care if he got caught- like Jodi Arias or Betty Broderick- the act of killing was more important than the consequences of doing so. Nothing can be done to undo what happened. I just hope no one associated with the events at party and beyond feel like they should have done something different. NR is the sole person to blame and hopefully he stays in jail forever so no one else is harmed by him. This was a calculated double murder in my opinion based on what's presented by media.

You can be in a full psychotic break and still be able to go to a gas station and buy Gatorade with a credit card. Psychosis is a break from reality - often experiencing positive symptoms like visual or auditory hallucinations. You still have the wherewithal to do the things you normally do. I've seen clients perform some pretty complex tasks while experiencing psychosis.

I agree. I do not think this will meet the insanity test. I think this guy has serious mental health diagnoses, but I don’t have enough I formation to say he should be not guilty. We literally only know that he attested to having drug problems in the past and that he’s said he’s always had issues.

I agree 100%. I also agree that it’s totally premature for folks to say that he must not be guilty because he is mentally ill.
I share your view that if he was well enough to bring to a party, and well enough to plan an escape to a hotel, and well enough to avoid security, he was more than likely sane enough to be held accountable for murdering his parents. MOO

Oh, absolutely. I wasn't trying to deflect blame from him, he's 100% responsible any way you slice it. I just wanted to dispel misconceptions about psychosis because it leads people down an inaccurate logical path, i.e. he can't be this because he did this. Whether he was or he wasn't, he needs to be held accountable and kept far away from society permanantly, imo.
