CA - Pacific Palisades - 30,000 People Ordered to Evacuate From L.A. Wildfires

It wouldn't surprise me if it was due to some unhoused. There are many in the area, lightning fires for warmth, cooking. There have been several fires caused by this issue.

Hmm, that area of Pacific Palisades, in particular, is quite exclusive and not an area that would be easy for unhoused people to get to.

More central city areas, sure. Palisades is quite a tony area and would not be tolerating having unhoused in a development of $4 million + homes.

The curfew is in the areas of mandatory evacuation in the Pacific Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire area.

It is not a general LA county-wide curfew.

What accident of spark or flame at 10:30 am. Smoking is all I can think of.
I’m in central Texas and during the drought we were warned about mowing as a mower blade striking a rock can start a grass fire. Also welding can cause sparks if some repair was going on. My fence guys set a small fire on my property but they keep 5 gallon buckets of water on hand to douse small fires and don’t weld in windy conditions.

Just a reflection from a glass or metal surface can do it, if the beam of light is focused on something like dry grass.

Hope none of those incarcerated firefighters were sent to prison for arson
If you read the articles I've posted about incarcerated firefighters, you'll see that certain offences such as arson or sex offences disqualify an inmate from being eligible.

They do a very tough and dangerous job for virtually no pay, and a large percentage of them are women. They find it very difficult to get jobs as firefighters after release despite their training and frontline experience. In emergency situations like this one, sometimes as many as 30% of the firefighters risking their lives to save people, homes, and communities are incarcerated.

I hope those that do help get paroled or get some benefits from this… it’s sad to think about

That doesn’t sound fair at all
Nope. And yet they do it, because it's necessary and it's helping the society they want to be a part of.

The very least that could be established would be a transition program filtering firefighter parolees into employment, for those who want it. They've got the skills and the experience, and it's not like California doesn't desperately need them.

Yes, I looked last night (after you posted info about it) and there are a bunch of things that make a prisoner ineligible to become a firefighter.

Assignment to fire camp is only available to individuals with a minimum-custody status. Good behavior is highly valued, and inmates with histories of excessive misconduct are generally considered ineligible. Further, individuals must be both physically and mentally capable of performing strenuous manual labor for a period of several months.

In addition, some convictions can render an applicant ineligible for fire camp: murder, rape, kidnap, and arson. Applicants are also ineligible if they are serving a life sentence, have a felony hold, have ever been deemed a “prison gang member,” or have been sentenced for an escape attempt.

I figured someone was gonna end up intentionally setting a fire after seeing all this destruction.

This is a pyros fantasy
The area I live in had a bunch of suspicious fires this fall. I am shocked that no one has taken advantage of the situation to start anything so far. We still have a few days of wind warnings and they are supposed to strengthen in my area. Fingers crossed that the crazies stay away.

Almost 800 incarcerated firefighters are now working to control these fires. <3

Gives new meaning to giving back to the community

"The California prison system has now deployed nearly 800 incarcerated firefighters to fight the devastating blazes in the Los Angeles area, officials said on Thursday afternoon.

The California department of corrections and rehabilitation (CDCR) said it had 783 imprisoned firefighters out in the field responding to the emergencies. That figure has doubled from the day prior.

The incarcerated crews are embedded with the California department of forestry and fire protection (Cal Fire).

The CDCR operates more than 30 “fire camps” across the state where people serving state prison sentences are trained in firefighting and support authorities as they respond to fires, floods and other disasters.

The wages are meager, but are considered high-paying jobs behind bars, with CDCR firefighters earning between $5.80 and $10.24 a day and an additional $1 per hour when responding to active emergencies. When responding to disasters, they may earn $26.90 over a 24-hour shift.'
