It appears the location he went missing from is an intersection. Close to that is a hospital or Assisted living center. I wonder he if walked away from there? I don't see houses in that area. All IMO

Why does this seem to be a common occurrence with people living with disabilities or memory issues? Why wasn't he dropped off at his house?

Paradise police found the body of Hayley's father - 69-year-old Stanley Breed- off Skyway. His daughter told Action News Now he suffered from dementia, and he took a cab home from Enloe Monday night - but he never made it.

Weed said she sent her brother to do a wellness check on her father the next day. When she found it he didn’t return, she reported him missing and followed up with cab company Enloe coordinated and spoke to the cab driver.

"When I talked to the cab driver, he gave me the address that he had written down, and it was not the correct address. So my dad didn't know where to go, and so apparently they had been driving up and down Skyway for some time, and then my dad said, I don't know who said it, but it was just decided to just have him be dropped off at the 76 station on Skyway and Neil," said Weed.

Or why wasn't his family called to come get him?

Right. I know that hospitals are severely overburdened right now, and that people suffering from dementia can appear more competent than they are at times. I also know that the hospital can be an even more terrifying and disorienting experience for those with dementia than it is for those without. My guess is that Stanley wanted to leave and may have appeared able to navigate home-or the hospital was simply too busy to determine he wasn't able to.

I wonder if something like a medical alert bracelet could help in this scenario. HIPAA may complicate this unless the person to be contacted has a POA or guardianship. Then you have to make sure the elderly person wears it 24/7...

There are many difficult conversations to be had as our population ages and more and more people suffer dementia and related conditions. One of the biggest is how to preserve as much of the autonomy and right to privacy everyone wants and deserves without the dementia sufferer becoming a danger to themselves. In my recent experiences with my own grandfather, I know it's a very fine line. There are no easy answers, but it's important that someone is asking these questions.

Edit: sorry for writing an essay! Dementia has been a major theme in my life as we try to protect my grandfather-sometimes from the world at large, but often from himself.
