Video taken from a passenger of another plane that was taxing at the time of the crash, shows extensive smoke from burning fuel, no doubt from the separated wing.

I watched the conference. It was a short statement by the CEO of the Toronto Airport. She basically covered what has been said in various news reports. No questions were taken.

Imo.

New footage of plane coming in.

So thankful right now that there are no fatalities as it seemingly could have turned out quite differently.

I was thinking the Sioux City crash landed on its back. I looked it up and it was Flight 232 in 1989. In that crash, the plane was on its back but torn apart. Today’s crash in Toronto is miraculous, insofar as everyone survived and the plane remained intact.

edit: Sioux City not Falls

I remember that like it was yesterday.

IIRC, they completely lost their hydraulics. It's nothing short of miraculous that anyone survived the Flight 232 crash.

Latest from Toronto press conference:

-First responders were at scene in minutes, helped evacuate passengers

-No fatalities, airport CEO doesn't know of any critical injuries (this contradicts what we've heard from other paramedic groups who used helicopters to transport victims)

-Two runways will remain closed while investigation continues

I concur .... .

Haven't flown in years but always thought it was one of the safest modes of transportation.
It is still safer than traveling by car. Many more people die in car crashes than air travel.

It didn't land on its back, it came to rest on it after the fuselage rolled as it broke up on landing. It landed right way up, but the damage to the hydraulic controls meant it was skewed despite the three pilots best efforts, and one wing clipped the ground as it touched down, sending it into the roll.

The fact that most people walked away from this crash proves the importance of making sure seatbelts are being worn, tray tables stowed, aisles kept clear, and bags in compartments.

I’ve always thought that children should be required to be strapped into seats inside their safety seats but in this country children under age 2 are allowed to sit in an adult’s lap.

Thanks shadow! It’s amazing so many survived that crash. Do you know if the Toronto jet actually landed on its back today?

It's miraculous everyone survived and most just walked away. I only hope the three who are "critically" injured, though apparently not life threatening, will not have life changing consequences from the injuries, especially the 4 year old.
Seeing the videos of the extensive smoke, maybe in this case it was fortunate (if that word an be used) that the wing and engine with burning fuel separated. This could have been so much worse. Did the other wing also snap off?

Flying in this weather, snow and wind is scary...I've been in a couple of frightening incidents myself, including an emergency landing, when I was a kid, on a runway covered in foam. Turned out ok, though there were injuries.

Flying at the end of the month. Maybe a stiff drink on the plane will be in order.
