Well, this makes no sense to me: Tesla INCREASING prices in Canada up to 21%

I'd think Tesla would be a pariah brand in Canada and they would want to decrease the prices, not increase them.

Tesla has raised prices on its entire vehicle lineup in Canada, with increases ranging from $11,000 to $30,000, or as much as 21%, according to a report from driveteslacanada.ca. This price increase is attributed to new tariffs being implemented on US-made vehicles, according to reports from Bloomberg and financialpost.com

  • Model 3: Long Range AWD: $68,990, up to $79,990.

  • Model Y: Long Range AWD: $69,990, up to $84,990.

  • Model S: Long Range AWD: $114,990, up to $133,990.

  • Cybertruck: Dual Motor AWD: $114,990, up to $139,99
Perhaps Elon feels the need to get bonus points with his master, DJT.

Someone has to pay the tariff, and the billionaire doesn't want to give a tax to the External Revenue Service.

Half of the people who voted are similarly brain-washed, and that is a problem. They dismiss the arrest and imprisonment of protesters/ immigrants with visas/ USA citizens as "getting rid of criminals". They believe that tariffs are a tax on foreign countries and cheered the creation of the External Revenue Office. When the USA president is called out for blatant untruths, they dismiss it as as jesting and exaggeration.

Life today in the USA must be even more divisive than the Biden years, where Trump/Republicans spent Biden's entire presidential terms harassing him.
Yes it is. I shudder as I watch the country becoming more anti diversity and I despise the hateful rhetoric.

Everything is dumbed down and that empowers ignorance.

There are a lot of angry white men in this country. They are buying into fascism. Billionaires bought Trump and Vance.

I choose to have faith that good will overcome the evil we are witnessing. Even the Pope called out this administration for what they are doing. Let that sink in.

Thx for your kind words. So many of us are helpless because of our Republican politicians that have free rein because billionaires can buy them and do.

No link. It is all over the news.

"Nearly 2 out of 3 Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of tariffs, a rebuke of the administration’s flagship economic policy, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos national poll.

Overall, 64% of Americans disapprove of the president’s efforts to raise import taxes, compared with 34% who approve, according to the poll conducted over the past week.

The University of Michigan Survey of Consumers reported today that consumer sentiment fell for the fourth straight month in April, with Americans expecting prices to rise 6.5% in the next year, the highest since 1981."

Most Americans disapprove of Trump on tariffs, Post-ABC-Ipsos poll finds

He doesn't care anymore if Americans disapprove- he is beyond that now- he is living his dream of ruling like a King and planning on remaining King for the future- his plan is no more elections--- he knows his MAGA morons will stay with him forever, and the rest don't matter.

There's a report in the Mail today that a BA flight from Washington DC to London was forced to make an emergency landing in Boston yesterday due to a suspected bird strike.

Obviously those passengers boarded within the US so an emergency landing in this case should not be an issue, but it got me thinking about what will now happen to passengers if a flight simply overflying the US is forced to put down on US territory, eg flights between Toronto and the Caribbean or Vancouver and Mexico. Generally such passengers are given appropriate support pending the repair or replacement of their plane, but will the US now treat them in a hostile manner, ie arrest, detention and deportation, for not having visas/entry clearance?

"Israel’s central bank said that US-imposed tariffs are affecting the Jewish state’s economy as markets and tech investments come under risk.

Many of Israel’s pension funds are invested in the stock market, while its tech industry is funded to a large extent by US venture capital money, “so to the extent that uncertainty weighs on those two things, that’s also directly affecting our economy,”

US President Donald Trump’s administration imposed a 17% tariff rate on Israel, making it one of the hardest hit nations in the Middle East despite their close alliance."

"China has a proposal for a US ally.

They want to join forces against Trump.

China has proposed that Japan,
one of the treaty allies of the United States,
join forces in the fight against the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump,
the Japanese agency Kyodo News reported.

Japan has responded with reserve,
not disclosing details of its plans.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang
sent a letter to Ishiba via Beijing’s ambassador in Tokyo,
appealing to his Japanese counterpart to jointly combat U.S. protectionism.

Japan reacted with reserve.
Japan 'will consider its relations with China and treat them with caution'.

As Newsweek noted,
China and Japan could have trouble coordinating their responses to Trump's tariffs.

One obstacle to joint action
could be the long-standing border dispute over the Senkaku Islands,
which are currently administered by Japan.

Another point of conflict
is China's ban on Japanese seafood imports."

Removing inter-provincial trade barriers is already making a difference! I doubt Canadians will buy USA wine after the boycott, because Canadian wines are so similar to USA wines. It is a $1.1 billion USD loss for the USA.

"Canada's united boycott of U.S. booze could result in a banner year for British Columbia's wine industry, while also delivering a financial blow to vineyards south of the border.

The Buy Canadian movement is expected to boost demand for B.C. wine and some other types of homegrown liquor as the absence of U.S. product means more space at retail stores and on restaurant menus. The number of visitors to vineyards could also rise as many Canadians steer clear of the U.S. this summer.
...

Several provinces are looking to boost interprovincial trade in the face of looming U.S. tariffs, which could lead to more B.C. wines on store shelves across the country.

Since B.C. struck a direct-to-consumer wine sale program with Alberta in early January, over 43,200 bottles have been sold from 89 B.C. wineries, according to B.C. cabinet minister Garry Begg.
...

South of the border, it's a distressing situation as Canada is the largest export market for the U.S. wine industry, with a retail value of about $1.1 billion US annually. ... Even after the Canadian boycott is eventually resolved, some U.S. industry leaders are concerned about the long-term impact because of the psychological damage to the consumer."

When we think 'Canada', we don't immediately think 'wine', but we forget how far south Canada reaches. The 49th Parallel in Europe runs through Champagne and the Rhineland, and southern Ontario is even further south than that.

Chinese brands Shein and Temu have begun raising prices to US-sold goods. From 8% up to 377%

Shein has increased the cost of some items by 377% ( kitchen towels, apparently) while others are a different levels of increase. Unclear as to why some have dramatically larger increases than others.

"Most of the hikes in US prices came on Friday, with markups significantly higher in some categories than others, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News. The average price for the top 100 products in the beauty and health category increased by 51% from Thursday, with several of the items more than doubling in price. For home and kitchen products and toys, the average jump was more than 30%, led by a massive 377% increase in the price of a 10-piece set of kitchen towels. For women’s clothing the rise was 8%."

BC and Ontario are both known in Canada for their wine industry.

So much denial in the comments. Apparently Trump's folly has no effect on Canadian elections. Don't believe fake news (MSM). It's all about rejecting Trudeau's legacy.

Trump is in constant denial these days, so I'm not surprised that his voters are too.

I can't read DM articles because the website is a memory hog - slows down my old computer. Who does the tabloid think will be the best Prime Minister of Canada to deal with Trump Madness?

Trudeau and his Liberal Party mandate are ancient history. The current Prime Minister is centrist, and has already rejected/eliminated several of Trudeau's unpopular decisions. Is the DM stuck in the past?

The DM is stuck doing whatever Rupert Murdock wants them to do and say.

Once again, when I shop at Costco, I read the labels to figure out where stuff is made, and therefore susceptible to tariffs. Now it's a matter of curiosity as well as a concern for shortages or price increases.

I have a feeling there is some chicanery going on.

I buy Campari branded tomatoes that come on the vine, in a package of about 12. I like them because they are not too big and are easily cut up to put in salads or stews and can easily be eaten fresh in the hand.

For months I've been buying them labeled as hothouse-grown in British Columbia. Which made sense during the winter months.
The last set I bought 3 weeks ago was Grown in the USA
The set I bought yesterday were Product of Mexico.

BC Canada, US, Mexico? They all look like the same product to me.

I think they have all been the same price, exactly same packaging and logo, only the origin notation has changed. So curious.

Temu has now also added import prices. I made a $20 order last night and there was a 29.00 import fee. It was for my favorite underwear so I paid it but I won't be shopping there for anything else nor will my husband and we were REGULAR customers. They are gonna lose a TON of customers and I am sure Shein will too.

That would be due to the tariff imposed by the USA on products from China ... and which China is passing on to the consumer.

Do you think that is how Temu (and Shein) are handling the tariffs?

Documenting it as an "import fee" separate from the shipping so it is more apparent that it is a tariff penalty?

I'm wondering how Walmart, Target, and Amazon, along with others are going to label the price increases.

Yes, the southern tip of Ontario is at the same latitude as the wine country of Northern California.
