The opium trade, initiated by the British, also had a terrible effect on China. Study the Opium Wars. It is a parallel to fentanyl today, and perhaps Chinese leaders look at fentanyl as a strategic tool to undermine the US.

No Chinese politician of any stripe would allow Trump to humiliate them.
Thank you for bringing this up. This was a small event in US history, barely covered in school. But, an obsession for China.`

I'm confused. Did China take the bait or not?

Interesting. I have been reading the background of the "wins" that the WH announced in 'bringing manufacturing to the US'. Notice that the chocolate company is also expanding in Canada.

Novartis, a Swiss drugmaker - "We believe we can manage the tariffs - though of course they will be very painful - so while that is a factor (behind this investment), it's not the driving factor," Novartis Chief Executive Vas Narasimhan said in an interview, adding that it aims to produce all the drugs it sells to Americans in the U.S. rather than import them. (Link)

Amsterdam-based AMG Critical Minerals - is adding a aluminothermic production facility to manufacture chrome metal, next door to its existing titanium facility in Pennsylvania. It will be the only chrome metal production facility in the US. (Link)

NOVONIX Limited, an Australia-based battery technology company - as per my previous link, this agreement was already negotiated and agreed with Biden.

Barry Callebaut, a Swiss chocolate company - "We have one ... facility that we will scale out to about 100,000 tons in the United States that will allow us to actually serve customers better also in the U.S.," CEO Peter Feld said during a post-earnings call with analysts.
He also said that the cocoa processor, which supplies chocolate for Unilever's soon-to-be-spun-off Magnum ice creams and Nestle's KitKat bars, was doubling down on investments in its plant in Brantford, Canada. (Link)

Guardian Bikes, a leading kids’ bicycle brand - this venture was first floated in March 2022 as per this .... "Today, we are announcing a HUGE step in our mission, and our biggest innovation yet. We are building a highly automated factory to make Guardian Bikes right here in the USA". (Link)

BMW is considering adding shifts to boost production at its South Carolina plant - “The plant in Spartanburg has been an important location in our global BMW Group production network for over 30 years,” the brand continued. “It is also our largest plant worldwide, serving domestic and international markets with the highly acclaimed BMW X models. (Link)

One of Spain’s leading olive oil producers - "He said Dcoop, a cooperative of 75,000 families in the southern region of Andalusia, "could" expand its still modest olive plantations in the United States, where Pompeian has two bottling plants." (Link)

USA culture from chasing what's cool today
Yeah...since the Great Depression and WWII, the US has been chasing cool. It used to be that "cool" lasted a few years, maybe a decade. Now, cool cycles through much faster, and cheap fast fashion is the trend.

In Australia:

We can even vote at any polling station we want, even in another town if we're travelling.
My thinking is that the vote is compulsory so I'm going to try to make my vote count, but I would vote even if it wasn't compulsory.

I think of it as not only a duty but also a privilege to vote and I like to think that even though I'm only one person it could very well be my vote that leads to a better, fairer, more compassionate government.
Because Australians are obliged to vote, Australia s government is obliged to make it easy and provide access to vote for every Australian wherever they may be, Mawson Base Antarctica. ( There is a special arrangement for those wintering over in the Antarctic ) .. Uulaan Bataar in Mongolia, Reykjavik . Iceland.. the poor consular chaps have to let us in to vote..

If we don't have Embassy rep, wherever we are travelling or residing temporarily, we get to use other peoples , by agreement, mostly the British embassy or consulate, but sometimes the French embassy, or the Spanish and Portugese make themselves available..

Trump thinks so, but in reality no. China has been prepared for a trade war and it has countered his tariffs with their own.

I genuinely think that the Chinese set the bait and Trump ran at it , full tilt and fell in.

Either way, the Chinese, as the eminent VIctor Gao says, they've been around for 5000 years.... they are in no hurry to depart., They have been formulating strategy for Trumps idiocy re tariffs since 2018 , his first foray into crazy.. . Trump says. 'I know what I'm doin'..,, the Chinese certainly know what Trump is doing , sometimes before he does.. That's how nutty this whole thing is.

In my mind, it's come to this:

"Oh, that's just the President of the United States having one of his hissy fits. Pay no attention..."

JMO
Of course they don’t want us to pay attention. They want to curtail freedom of the press without our noticing. Pay attention everyone. This is tyranny in the making.

Then why is he posting it on social media!

It's the quiet ones who go around people's backs who are dangerous. This is pure bluster.

I worry for Chinese Americans in all this.
You know, they had it once, during COVID. Not only Chinese Americans. Any Eastern Asian Americans because the people who decided to boycott them are unaware of the difference between China and Taiwan. Korean businesses got boycotted, too. So strangely, Asians are more prepared. Same with Mexicans because they already heard it from their neighbor. I can't say they are nonchalant, but unsurprised. I think Canada is more angry this time.

But maybe, it is a lesson for all us humans to be prepared to hide the hunted ones because we can always be on the receiving end.

He posts so much junk people stop paying attention. It may be bluster but he’s acted on his bluster plenty of times. He’s very dangerous.

Sadly, not everyone has the strength to hide Ann Frank in their attic. They cower in fear hoping, to use Churchill's metaphor, the crocodile eats them last.

STUPID STUPID STUPID. Just an observation of behaviour, folks, not at all like name-calling.

It's all a bit like being on the ocean in a boat, deliberately sinking it because you didn't make it yourself, then vowing to build your very own boat. Without any resources or skills to make one. While treading water.

Me too. But the Chinese aren't afraid of Trump.
I may be wrong but I think @KinseyFan was thinking about Chinese Americans and how they might be targeted by people being made to see China and Chinese people as the enemy.
