Also to add, I am unsure how likely... but there is a small airport in Victoria as well. They must've ditched that car somewhere if they went to the airport, so ferry would actually be easier as you don't get out of the car to get on the ferry.
I speculate the clients told her they'd be flying in - either the airport or float plane/helicopter. That could explain the sunset hour for the showing, and also them appearing without a car (tho isn't it suspicious that million dollar buyers in a strange city would apparently ask a cab to drop them off on a street, rather than drive them directly up to the correct home... but too late for Lindsay to object).

However, police traced the phone as having arrived the previous day on the ferry - so that also confirms to me they'd go back the same way.

In terms of cartels, it was apparently a very violent time for smugglers in BC as they were starting to deal directly with Mexicans, cutting out the American middlemen.

This story is from 2012:

"they have no idea who they're messing with," said Doug Spencer, a former gang investigator with the Vancouver Police Department....I would describe it as a cutthroat business relationship," Whalen said. "I think, particularly on the Mexican cartel side, you will find they deal with who they need to deal with and they will dispose of who they need to dispose of when it comes time."

IMO, the murder might have been to send the message to gang members arrested or soon to be arrested: "this is what will happen to your girlfriend /sister /wife /child if you rat me out to police."

There was a grotesque story out of Argentina recently, 3 young women were lured to a home and killed to send a message (via social media) to other members of the gang 'this is what will happen to you if you steal drugs from me'. But they went way too far and were all arrested. Brutal killings of young women leave Argentina in shock and anger

Finally, I noticed this comment from Lindsay's mother: "Reitmayer said Lindsay specifically advertised Jason as not being a drug user. “That was a big deal for her,” she told Capital Daily."

So, it seems possible Lindsay might have become known to her high school friends group, as having become anti-drug. Which could fuel paranoia about her among the pro-drug.
